"The Making of nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up"

This is a perspective on one of the hottest racial issues in Canada. In August 2016 Canadian media exploded with the news that an young aboriginal man was shot and killed by a white farmer. As the story and the ensuing court case brought the facts to light, it become a bigger and bigger focal point of Canadian racial divisions. The ultimate outcome drew more attention still as an all-white jury found the white farmer innocent.

A tremendous number of underlying racial problems in Canada were all underlined in this one case. From one end, in the court case it was revealed that Boushie and his friends were driving from farm to farm stealing from properties. The RCMP had already been called to look at a nearby farm, before Boushie died, where his friends admitted to having tried to smash out a truck window with the but end of a rifle. The narrative of what happened on the farm where Boushie died was complicated in court, because everyone of his friends admitted they were all very drunk. Two of his friends also greatly changed their testimonies in court compared to those originally given to police. With Canada's court system, that made a reasonable doubt bar hard to over come.
