Jared Diamond is not optimistic about America (pbs 2/13/09)

Diamond talks about the elite making decisions that insulate themselves thus making society on the whole much worse. New Orleans is used as example and he hints towards the stimulus bill. He explains that in previous societal collapses decisions in times of crisis make or break a civilization.

Collapse depressed me until the end, when Diamond makes the argument that we CAN make wise choices given our dire circumstances. But now I'm seeing that the ones whose wise choices would make the most difference really aren't making those choices. Sigh.

Heard this on the air on Friday.. Nice piece.
