The host of this British Documentary, Joan Washington, teaches accents to actors for a living. She's taught more than 300 different accents, and she's a recognized expert. But how can she teach the appropriate accents for historical dramas? A remarkable discovery has been made which for the first time gives voice to the English accents of the first part of the twentieth century. And it has been found in the most unlikely place - Germany. Hundreds of recordings have come to light which reveal the accents and dialects of British prisoners-of-war held in German camps and recorded during the First World War. This archive presents a unique glimpse into the way ordinary men spoke at the time. Joan Washington visits not only the home of the recordings in Germany, but the present-day families of the men who were recorded there.
This is fascinating for anyone who cares about vocal nuance and changes over time.
