General Merrill McPeak, Why we must leave Iraq

General Merrill McPeak says Bush is a criminal, naive and has caused damage that will last hundreds of years.

I freely admit I don't understand why it's so important to have "good standing" among our "global neighbors" when these other countries have governments that treat their peoples like serfs and cattle and are ruled with iron fist by kleptocrats, dictators or socialists who can seize private property any time they wish.

Is America supposed to feel bad for not living down to these lower, inferior standards and ways of life?

The good general, reflecting on the halcyon days of Gulf War I, seems to have selective amnesia about the Muslim war against the West that's been ongoing since 1979 and well before.

He's also wrong about imperialism, which DOES work, when applied sincerely and with great intent. Countries ruled under the British Empire in its heyday prospered far more than their more primitive neighbors. We should freely take some Iraqi oil to help pay for the war effort, as well as taking some of Mexico's oil reserves to pay for the cleanup of their undeclared invasion.

America has lost its martial spirit; the same reason ancient Rome fell. That's the real problem in Iraq and elsewhere.

END OP-ED.

The U.S. has a weakened global influence as a result of the mismanaged pre-emptive war in Iraq and by lowering our human rights standards. It is not in our national security interests to strain our relationships with our allies.

Military rule alone doesn't make a great empire.

"...the Muslim war against the West that's been ongoing since 1979 and well before.

What tripe.

Yet another "Boo! They're out to kill you!" line of bull.

And speaking of selective amnesia, you conveniently forget that those corrupt kelptocracies of which you speak are almost always given the full support of our government.

That's what the people in the Muslim world are sick and tired of.

Imperialism has never worked anywhere. The fight over Kashmir between Pakistan and India is a result of British Empire simply drawing up convenient borders, then departing to leave ethnic tensions to flare up. The same is in the Middle East where where the British simply handed over a regional issue over to another set of peoples. The same in Africa where borders drawn up by various nations that colonized the continent creating the disastrous ethnic tensions that spill over into genocide such as Rwanda.

America is the beacon of western civilization because it strives to be better then the rest. That is the mark of the great nation now hijacked by people who don't understand the ideals upon which it was founded on, resisting imperialist rule by the British.

So tired of so called patriots willing to give away everything this nation is built on because of what?

Fear.
