Forgotten Empire - Historic Persian Art Exhibition

"Two thousand years ago, this vast and powerful empire stretched from the Mediterranean to the River Indus. Great kings created the breathtaking cities of Persepolis, Susa and Pasargadae, which now lie in ruins." The British Museum's website has a virtual tour available of the exhibit which took place last year.

Great post - I really enjoyed the exhibition!

I visited Persepolis in 2004 - the ruins are spectacular and the carvings are sublime. Many of the carvings are still black from when Alexander the Great burnt Persepolis to the ground in 331 B.C. One of the rooms in the palace is covered with writing in many of the different ancient scripts, including verses from the Qur'an in one of the earliest forms of Arabic - Kufic. If you ever get a chance to go you must check out the nearby Necropolis and Zoroastrian fire temple.
