Eve of Destruction

theo47says...

I was raised Catholic, and I somehow avoided being one of these Christians obsessed with "the end of the world".

Religion demands a self-importance that humans haven't been around long enough to earn, much less deserve. The world wasn't created 6000 years ago, and the "eve of destruction" (for this planet, anyway) won't be until it falls into the sun long, long after we're dead.

I was raised Catholic, too, theo, and I always wanted us to get in on the Rapture...maybe because it I thought it would be cool to be instantly transported to heaven while still in my body. Mother Mary got the trip, but nobody else.

You won't find the term "rapture" in the Bible. Dispensationalism movement started up in the 30's and the word "rapture" was coined then.

When I was a kid the idea scared me. I was afraid if we were raptured, then who would take care of my dog?

Of course, if our bodies could actually be transported from one place to another, then we are just the sum of our parts, aren't we?

In other words, if all our molecules can be disintegrated and reintegrated again, where does our "soul" go?

Oh, right - Jesus is magic.
