Colony Collapse Disorder - Why are the bees disapearing?

Colony collapse disorder is a phenomenon involving the dying off of a beehive or colony. The bees are not found dead around the hives, but seem to not return to their hives. Recently this has spread from the Western honey bee to colonies in Europe.

Along with recent research that shows cellphone signals may be to blame, previous research shows the causes may be environmental related stresses that affect the bee's immune system, pesticide use or genetically modified foods.

The bees are necessary to pollinate certain crops, in 2000 an estimated US$15 billion of crops relied on bee pollination.

It's more likely pesticides. There are pesticides called neonicotinoids which basically give the pests the insect version of alzheimers, which sounds exactly like what's going on here.

Neonicotinoids have been strictly limited in France since the 1990s, when they were implicated in a mass die-off of the bee population.

While many pesticides are downright lethal to bees, some new studies have pointed to other strange effects found at low doses. For example, low doses of new compounds called neonicotinoids might be interfering with bee minds. Potentially, this prevents them from remembering their colony's location and causes them to get lost and never return.
That's a almost perfect description of what happens in CCD....

I read up about it after they talked about it on NPR. They said environmental related stresses , pesticides or genetically modified foods were the main suspects at this point but from what I have found about the cellphone signal research it seems that could be a problem too, it certainly fits the time frame.
It strikes me as a serious problem. There likely wont be any food shortages because as far as I know bees are only used to pollinate certain crops; but it should definitely have some economic impact, hopefully enough for people to put politics aside and take it seriously.
