jwrayEventually, the only thing that could save us from exponential population growth without bloodshed will be a worldwide treaty imposing limits on reproduction. Voluntary limitation of reproduction is (eventually) doomed to failure because of evolution. It's another "prisoner's dilemma" writ large, and the only good solution to that kind of problem is government.
CrosswordsI think the only way mars could be successfully settled is if there was a reliable energy source. As stated the amount of solar energy that makes it to Mars is much less than our planet, and while there is wind (that can be very fast) it lacks the same force our wind does, do to Mar's thin atmosphere. I'm not even sure nuclear would be a possibility. While nuclear power has been used to power long range probes, I'm thinking the kind of power required by some kind of settlement would require an all out plant. Maybe not one even close to these size of those in service, but something that could provide a good measure of power over long periods of time.
jwrayFusion power would be much more viable on Mars (or bodies even farther than the sun) because the low ambient temperature would make it easier to cool superconductors.
