Bill O'Reilly the Populist

BillO first dismisses the Obama plan to tax oil companies, in order to get a rebate to people to help pay energy bills as a terrible idea, then in the next breath makes an argument for the oil companies to do it voluntarily, because it's a good idea.

Assuming BillO means any of what he says in this clip, this is a good example of what confuses me about conservatives in general.

He dismisses using taxes and government rebates to force the oil companies to provide for the people who're getting crushed by the rise in price, but then turns around and proposes they do the same thing voluntarily.

Supposedly he "contacted" them about this idea, and got laughed at (no surprise).

To me, I think judicious use of government in cases like this would be beneficial, but to a conservative it seems that it's some high crime to force a record-profit-earning company to help out people who're being crushed by the increase in the price of gas, preferring instead to let those people get crushed.

To me, my moral calculus puts more value on helping those people, than ensuring Exxon is free to spend their money as they choose.

It's not the end of a free market -- it's a targetted tax increase, with a specific spending program attached, intended to help people, and quite likely the economy too.

What's wrong with that?

I cannot believe he seriously just said all that with a straight face?! Dismisses Obama's plan as "stupid" and "never going to happen" and then suggests the oil companies do it themselves voluntarily. Maybe he stole Bill Maher's stash before the show and smoked up.

"Another fine idea by Bill, he doesn't want Obama spending more money, and neither do I."

You never seemed to mind all of the money that Bush has been spending, on a criminal war and a new bogus "security" department that's violating our civil rights more and more every day.

He hasn't sent you the bill for his charges (taxes for his debt) but you and I owe that money Bush spent as sure as we're born.

You never complained about that, did you, Billy?
