I think I'm going to practice this, suggest the game to my friends and make them bet against me!

This won't always work. A better system is one in which the numbers are words as well. There was one I recall in which 1 was Tea (the T growing from the 1), 2 was Noah (don't ask) etc etc.
So to remember the banana you imagine it torpedoing a cup of tea. It worked for numbers greater than 10 and had a system for remembering large passages of text. It used to be advertised copiously in the British press.
