Atheist Morality For All!

Matt explains to a caller where atheists get their morality.

Where do Theists get rational thought from? That is what I would like to know. I will admit I have no morality when most religous people admit they have no brains.

What's going on here I think is the caller is at a stage of moral development where he relies on a rule-book or authority for right and wrong and doesn't realize the next stage is to have an internal sense of morality. The hosts are not realizing that a huge number of people aren't where they are - having an internal sense of morality and empathy for others around them. I'm guessing they grew up in an environment where they passed through that authority stage as children.

Kohlberg's Stages of moral development cover it.

And I think Pecks's ideas of spiritual development tie it into religion and athiesm.

Very good point! This also illustrates why it is so important to give young people direct, compassionate, and effective moral leadership. (and not outsource the job to ANY book.)

Young people should be taught about the veil of ignorance idea in school. Do unto others... doesn't really make you think of specific examples of how to apply morality very well, whereas if you imagine yourself as the other person behind the veil, clarity as to which decision is moral/just becomes very clear immediately.

I'd love to believe that we just witnessed a teachable moment there...but my cynicism tells me that the caller just gave up.

But in all seriousness. More people need to be taught this. You are not in a bubble where your actions only affect you, you and six billion other people are all part of the same system, so it's in EVERYONE's interests to work together for the common good.

It's not religion, it's not rocket science. You don't have to be an atheist or have advanced degrees in science and philosophy to understand this.
