Andrei Tarkovsky is one of my “favorite directors” when asked. If you haven't seen "Solaris" (the original), "The Mirror," "Stalker," or "Nostalghia," do yourself the favor.

(He reminds me a lot of Rainer Maria Rilke's "Letters to a Young Poet.")
