Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is a poorly understood phenomenon involving the massive die-off of a beehive or bee colony. CCD was originally found only in colonies of the Western honey bee in North America, but European beekeepers have recently claimed to be observing a similar phenomenon in Poland, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, with initial reports coming in from Switzerland and Germany, albeit to a smaller degree. The cause (or causes) of the syndrome is not yet well understood and even the existence of this disorder remains disputed. Theories include environmental change-related stresses, malnutrition, unknown pathogens (i.e., disease), mites, pesticides, emissions from cellular phones or other man-made devices, and genetically modified (GM) crops.

farcraftersays...I like the topic of CCD, but this seems to imply that pollution and bad advertising kill bees. I favor the disease theory, because the abandoned hives are not plundered by the usual suspects. I think there has been some other evidence found in support of the disease theory, like a specific virus isolated in several hives.
bamdrewsays...the problem is there is not a single agent discovered in each of the empty colonies and amongst the dead bees. a parasitic funcus that was once rare appears to be a likely killer, but again its not uniformily being found everywhere.
the wikipedia article well presents the topic; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_collapse_disorder
