Here is the story of the complex engineering, the near fall of Boeing and Seattle, and the death of America's supersonic passenger program.
When you think of supersonic passenger aircraft, you think the British/French Concorde. The Concorde ended up being the only long term supersonic passenger aircraft. The Russian Tupolev Tu-144, while out of the gate first made only 55 flights before a couple accidents ground it from passenger service, leaving it to research only.
What you may not know is that the US also had a supersonic program in place, with a good deal of funding from the government. Two designs came forward, with Boeing eventually winning the contract to go forward. The plane, not even the prototype, would ever be finished.
Had it been finished, it would have been faster than the Concorde by over 600 MPH.
