Alberta Hunter, was a contemporary of, though not as successful as ma Rainey or Bessie Smith, but she did work hard at it, like they all did to make a living...she traveled with the USO, and performed for inlisted men, all over the world-Became a Nurse at the age of 40 sumpthin' When Hunter retired from nursing in 1977, she was 81 and ready to go back on the road. By this time her voice was gritty, down and dirty, and her fans loved her for it. She made four albums for Columbia between 1977 and her death in 1984.She was dicovered again, and this time, a whole lotta anglo folks got to hear her....she enjoyed a swan song of revived popularity , performing around the world, once again, to the delight of a new generation, skipping a couple, at least, of fans........
