Afghani War Rug Exhibit

"War Rugs" is the term used to describe rugs produced in Afghanistan and in the refugee camps of Pakistan and Iran, following the Russian Invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. The decorative style shown on these rugs is one of war iconography, and reflects the world of the Afghan weavers during the Russian occupation of their country, which ceased in 1989. See http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/afghanwarrugs For descriptions and detailed illustrations of motifs and post-9/11 rugs, check out http://www.warrug.com/

I wish the quality was better with more detail. The artists' depictions of tanks and helicopters woven in next to the traditional borders and motifs are just stunning. Lots of close-ups and photos at the warrug.com site.
