8-year-old rocks the f*** out on Guitar Hero II, "Dead!"

I want to see this kid tackle the Buckethead song.

hey, are there any real guitar players out there who dig this game???....'Cause it is tricky hard to watch someone doing this.....I mean as in excruciating. Some of the most non-compelling activity in a video game ever seen by meem, but then again, weaning came on a real guitar for meem.....at least that dancing game gets you kiddies off their fat asses!!!

This kid'll grow up with a mullet and a dream.....

As someone who plays both real and plastic guitar, I find this game to be something fun to help pass the time when I'm not practicing. Also, it's helped me keep a tighter rhythm, loosen my fingers, and even work on my stage appearance.

Yup I play real guitar as well. GH and GH2 have been a great source of fun for me and my son. I would say that it definitely improves rhythm and left hand dexterity, but overall its just a fun toy.

As for being non-compelling, I'd say ripping through the solo of YYZ without missing any notes is pretty compelling to me, even if the people watching aren't having as much fun as I am.

I don't mind Guitar Hero, but unless this kid spends more time reading or outdoor activities than he does on this game than I'm inclined to agree with Choggie. Oh, help us if this is the future of our savants.

I hadn't seen this game before. Gives me mixed feelings, but mostly positive. On the one hand, it's great to have something 'new' like this, and something other than just shooters to play. Also, it'll almost definitely spark his interest in the real thing (instrumental performance) some day, if it hasn't already. On the other hand, it's kind've a shame to be 'wasting' time doing this when he could be playing guitar for real (again though, he might be already), and he (and others) are undoubtedly learning bad technique from games like this; developing fingering technique is not a matter of throwing yourself at it as fast as you can and just trying to do it. He would find real play, as well as the game, much easier if he had the experience or a teacher to teach him to control those fingers flailing all over the place.

That said though, quite cool of the kid, looks fun, and hats off to the developers.

Oh yeah, and why do we always assume all kids on the sift are 8?

Kids (and adults) are gonna play video games; just accept that. Granted, that time should be budgeted and controlled, but they are just fun. This game does have the positives of non-violence and possibly generating interest in playing a real instrument. I started viewing the Fretlight video and decided that I see no music theory behind it. Once you start getting into an actual guitar, you should be learning the "whys" of music as well as the "hows".
