200KM/H Crash Test

oritteropo says...

A collision with two cars head on with a combined impact speed of 200km/h is not actually equivalent to this test at all. If you do the math you actually work out that two cars each travelling at 100km/h hitting head on generate the same forces on their occupants as a single car hitting a fixed barrier at 100km/h. (reference, sadly light on mathematical proof)

The 5th gear test at 193km/h resulted in occupant deceleration of 400g (100g is survivable, although you can expect injuries such as detached retina, and I have heard of someone surviving 179g). Robert Kubica's accident resulted in a peak g-force reading of 75g.

200km/h crash into a stationary object is like 2 cars hitting head-on at 100km/h each.

TBH, that kind of scenario is quite reasonable.

Here's what a car that can protect the drive in that kind of crash looks like :

300 kph into wall, at ~45 degrees.

(45 degree bounce = 70% of 300hp/h instant deceleration in the direction right-angle to the wall = 212kph immediate deceleration)

I'd guess that it would cause warping as the structure got bigger, they need the previous layers to cool rapidly to prevent deformation (although the previous layer needs to be hot enough to get a good water tight bond). Coming up with the right temp so that it forms a seamless flat surface would be difficult without causing running.

Not to be "that guy" (okay, what the hell, I love being "that guy") but aside from arty stuff, light shades, the aforementioned ashtrays and perhaps some really funky vases/glasses, this really seems to be limited by the method of extrusion and the refraction caused by having so many curved surfaces throughout the piece.

So to make it seamless would they need to up the ambient temperature plus the speed of the nozzle? Or could they just make the nozzle quick enough that the previous layer hadn't started to cool before the next one hit?

Two identical cards show up in high stakes poker game

Chairman_woo says...

That's they key here it is played with one deck at a time, but there is often more than one deck knocking around in the shoe. Especially when playing at a high level they can swap decks as often as every couple of hands.

Cards quickly start to bend and warp & when the blinds alone are in the 100's or 1000's the cost of a new deck every few hands is pretty negligible. A decent casino will swap the decks frequently throughout a night/tournament.

The above should not happen if proper procedure is followed, one deck should never touch or mix with another, but I can see how it might happen by accident.

Other likely possibility is a manufacturing defect, though again with proper procedure that should be spotted when a new deck is spread out for the players to see. (also very unlikely with high grade decks).

Cops Tazer Horse Thief, Then Beat And Kick Over 50 Times

If it were left to the moderates - and you are not one, you are the other extreme - then change would never happen, because no one would be angry enough. How far would the abuse have to go, how rife would it have to be, before you got angry enough to try and change it? During the height of racism in america, you would have wondered why the million man march was necessary given that you never had any problems on your traffic stops.

I have read comments from newt praising the actions of the police when they act in ways which deserve praise.

Yet you - you never seem to rule out that a beating is unacceptable. You always add the caveat "maybe he wasn't putting his hands behind his back," (or similar) but in the same breath claim that you've never been in that situation. Perhaps if you had, you would understand that the human survival instinct is not something that can be turned off when you are being attacked.

Do you honestly, even in your closeted, warped and twisted mind, think that you can kick and punch someone in the face UNTIL they put their hands behind their back? You are excusing them on the basis that they make an impossible demand and the demand is not met.

Your guarantee is worthless, on what authority do you make it!? You have a pathetically ignorant world view in which if it works for you, it works for everyone - damn the evidence, and damn those who it doesn't work for. If your traffic stops went without a hitch, then all these videos of psychopaths in uniform are outliers and don't need to be dealt with. You're an excuse maker and an apologist for violent, dangerous individuals who are given exceptional power which they abuse.

Unless some people get angry about it, nothing will change, because people like you will always find a justification for them, and that's more reason to get angry.

Awful lot of hyperbole in some of these comments, especially from the poster, cop-hater newtboy.

The cops appear to be beating this guy w/o much cause, and that's illegal and improper. But newtboy seems to think every arrest is carried out this way.

To repeat myself, 700,000 arrests are made every year in the US. I can't predict what percentage involve illegal violence, but I can't imagine it being anywhere near even 1%.

What we can't tell by the video is whether the perp is refusing to comply by not putting his hands behind his back, etc, which would certainly justify some physical act by the cops to get compliance.

I agree that from the looks of it, it does appear to be illegal violence. But 10 deputies were suspended, so due process is being followed.

As for me, I've never been arrested. I've gotten traffic tickets, but never once did I give the officer any shit and never once was I treated unfairly. Your mileage may vary. But if you behave yourself, you are pretty much guaranteed to be left alone by the police.

I don't like country music, but she's an amazing singer. The interview was quite awkward. I'm not sure why they couldn't say it - Phil Donahue had an openly homosexual guest on this show more than a decade before this. I guess Arsenio Hall just wasn't as edgy

wtf is up with the background warping when the camera is on her?

Russian Drifting

newtboy says...

From my experience, and physics class, that should only be true if your brakes suck. Physics don't lie, and I was taught that static friction is ALWAYS greater than kinetic friction...meaning rolling tires grip better than sliding tires every time. If your brakes are able to grip with more 'stopping' force than the sliding tire produces and still allow 'slip', they should be able to stop you faster than sliding.

Perhaps on ice that's true, or other slippery surfaces where the sensors get confused, or with really bad or broken ABS, but good ABS seriously reduces the distance to stop AND retains control by rapidly (thousands per second) pulsing the braking force up to maximum possible force without stopping the rotation. That should be more stopping force than locked tires can produce if the brakes are in good condition.

I've been in the car when an idiot friend decided to prove it to me, and slammed on his new BMW's brakes at about 70mph. The seatbelt hit so hard I had the wind knocked out of me, and we stopped ridiculously fast (WAY faster than when I've locked up non-abs cars on the freeway...repeatedly). Afterwards, he needed new brakes all around, because they gripped so hard and hot it warped the new rotors, but never locked up the tires...retaining static friction between the road and tire. Dumb...but informative.

Payback said:

Newt, I gotta tell ya, there is no quicker way to stop than locking up all four wheels, other than spinning in the other direction on a dry surface to kill inertia (makes it worse on ice). You just have no control. ABS brake systems actually increase the distance needed to stop, they just provide the ability to control and turn at the same time.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

Harassment is a bad thing, but I feel very sorry for anyone that does not engage in general pleasantness, and finds phrases like "how are you?" and "nice day!" to be a form of harassment. Worst still, to chastise and publicly present them as harassers on youtube .. what sort of lowlife do you have to be to do that? I don't care how many actual harassers you caught, that is not an acceptable method so put the net away and get the fishing rod out.

I say things like hello, nice day.. And if i'm in a queue and i think of something to say that i think someone might find funny or help someone out, i'll say it. I don't expect a reply, but if there's a fun person around then it might pass the time better. I asked someone of the female persuasion at my pool the other week if they were looking for the sauna (slightly hidden away) because i heard her talking to what i assume was her husband about the sauna. I do that for old men, old ladies, fat blokes, skinny women; all sorts.. i offer men and women help out of the jacuzzi if they need it. Her reaction was to say "No..... WHY?" very pointedly.

Well you know what? Fuck her - i did something nice and now she's the one that's being rude to others. I cannot fucking stand the high and mighty attitude of these people, as though they have never been guilty of accidentally doing something other people didn't want them to do. As though they have an inbuilt capability to read the motive of other people. Obviously i offered to explain the location of the sauna because i wanted to have sex with her in it (yeah, sex in a disgusting public sweat box & burnt genitals, my favourite), god forbid someone actually be nice to someone else. I felt like being rude back, but that'd make me worse than her.

There is a very fine line between being an activist against harassment, and being an unhinged arsehole who goes around over reacting and getting the wrong end of the stick and hurting people who were showing genuine honesty. I'm so sorry if you've been harassed in the past, but you don't see victims of domestic abuse blaming everyone that looks/talks at them funny in the street for all the pain they've suffered - which is substantially more painful and personality-warping than the average activist blogger jumping on the "trigger-warning" bangwagon.

Harassment exists and this blanket of "harassment" that these videos engender for all sorts of shit is distracting us from that issue, and to some degree turning people against the issue..... I mean, if i get unfairly treated like a scumbag for years by "mostly" women who assume i'm harassing them, do i get license to make videos about it and complain about women as a whole, judging every action of every woman to be one of harassment because of my own insecurities? That's why these kind of videos are so poorly received @EMPIRE.. the majority of the content is the videographer sneering at people for being pleasant and exchanging niceties, why should people laud that kind of behaviour? I expect that behaviour to be discouraged by women as well and i'd forgive them for taking more notice of the fewer examples of harassment than i did, because opinions are a bit selfish by nature.

And i didn't even question the validity of the supporting cast..... I'm sure Rob Bliss (OF ROB BLISS CREATIVE DOT COM EVERYBODY FAVOURITE AND LIKE PLS) would have no desire to help make this video more interesting! I quote his own philosophy here from his website, he believes in "giving people the content that they want." Interestingly worded remit... Why does no one ever question the source if it's a "reality" video? The guy practically states in his "approach" section that he aims to pander to people, he doesn't want to challenge viewer opinion...

Walloftext, sorry, but i don't like the sentiment of this video, and i will not let people in the comments tell me that i am a bad person for doing so - these are my reasons.

I'm pretty sure this guy was doing something before the guy was filming him. That would be why this video was happening too. Dude saw something developing and turned his camera on.

As for the guy whining about this being "American" and not deescalating: Oh get off the cultural supremacy kick. People were telling him to settle down, that the police had already been called, asking him what his problem was, etc. He then escalated the situation and they responded by immobilizing him. Not kicking the crap out of him, immobilizing him. You either have a very warped view of how people act or you feel the need to hate on America for anything, regardless of how inappropriate.
