Jeremy Irons: Broadway 'Slowly Killing Itself'

westy says...

The fundamental problem with theater is its not convenient. for the same reason why i think cinema will lose movie goers.

if theaters can find away to make it more of a general exsperance, i dunno maby restrants with theaters built in, i dont see them working to well . especially when i can get a reasonably good exsperance by downloading a film and watching it at home. unless theaters can do something significantly different to what film can provide then im happy to see it die out , and just have comedy and small performances left.

be nice to see people open up virtual realty centers where thay mix game,s with reality and virtual reality. so you can be a character within a story.

Atheism WTF? (Wtf Talk Post)

Psychologic says...

>> ^gwiz665:
Every single piece of credible evidence points towards the non-existence of any form of God character, therefore it is the most reasonable position to be a non-believer.

I disagree with this statement. Science can disprove religious claims about the physical world (young earth, etc), but we currently do not have any methods for determining whether or not our existence was created.

That isn't a statement about religion. If our existence was created and that creator never interacted with the created reality then no religion would have any basis for determining the nature of that creator. While there wouldn't be any evidence directly related to a creator, that doesn't disprove the possibility.

One example: We will, at some point, have the ability to create virtual reality that is indistinguishable from the "real" world. How would any person, real or created, inside that simulation have any way of knowing that their reality was created? They wouldn't be able to prove or disprove its creation (unless they remembered being put into it).

There's no evidence that supports the idea that our existence was created, and hence no reason to actively believe that it was. However, that does not mean that the evidence points away from that possibility. There are plenty of situations that could both involve a creator and fit into our current scientific understanding.

I do not believe that our reality was created, but I do understand that the possibility does exist.

What is Transhumanism and why do Christians Not Like It?

raverman says...

There's no real difference in what people want. Just the packaging.

Is your new eternal body made from God's magic, or grown in a vat immune from flaws or disease? Does your life have more meaning if the new body is the reward?

You want heaven - made of gold in the clouds? or an immersive virtual reality cloud-hosted?

Roadhouse - "Be nice"

quantumushroom says...

Road House is a true classic that can be watched over and over again.

100 years from now, people will still be watching Dalton dispense wisdom and kick ass, perhaps even fighting alongside him via virtual reality, while Citizen Kane (more like Citizen LAME) molders on the shelf.

Yup. If you throw in a huge movable floor, a la Jamoroquai, you could expand the "virtual walkspace" but at the cost of real estate to support the floor. Maybe if the floor were a big enough sphere? That would allow for infinite movement along the plane, but it'd have to be big enough so you couldn't readily detect the curve, destroying the illusion. Then, just figure out how to stimulate the nerve endings in your hands and fingertips to simulate touch, changes in elevation, taste, and other more complex problems (which are sure to pop up) and you're there.

Actually in the Jamoroquai clip the floor didn't move, but the room was pushed over a floor. But the real technology is there:

The sphere idea also exists:

Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity

eric3579 says...

Oh yeah, what we’re living in, let me tell ya
It is a wonder man can eat at all
When things are big that should be small
Who can tell what magic spells we’ll be doing for us
And I’m giving all my love to this world
Only to be told
I can’t see, I can’t breathe
No more will we be
And nothing’s going to change the way we live
’Cause we can always take but never give
And now that things are changing for the worse
See, whoa, it’s a crazy world we’re living in
And I just can’t see that half of us immersed in sin
Is all we have to give these

Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to be governed by this love we have for
Useless, twisting, of the new technology
Oh now there is no sound, for we all live underground

And I’m thinking what a mess we’re in
Hard to know where to begin
If I could slip the sickly ties that earthly man has made
And now every mother can choose the colour of her child
That’s not nature’s way
Well that’s what they said yesterday
There’s nothing left to do but pray
I think it’s time to find a new religion
Whoa, It’s so insane
To synthesize another strain
There’s something in these
Futures that we have to be told

Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to be governed by this love we have for
useless, twisting, of the new technology
Oh now there is no sound, for we all live underground

Now there is no sound if we all live underground
And now it's virtual insanity
Forget your virtual reality
Oh, there's nothing so bad
As a man-made man, oh yeah, I know yeah
Ooh

Futures made of virtual insanity now
Always seem to be governed by this love we have for
Useless, twisting, of the new technology
Oh now there is no sound, for we all live underground

Now this life that we live in
It's so wrong
Shout out the window
Do you know that
There is nothing worse than a man-made man
Still there's nothing worse than a foolish man, hey

Virtual insanity is what we're living in
Yeah, it is alright

How do you buy music? (Music Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

For your situation, I'm sort of with direpickle and sort of with nibiyabi. I say just download the album you want, but also purchase the CD.

For my own music, I'm completely with MarineGunrock, although I do do as I described above and purchase a CD (even if I never use it) if I download something I really love.

And instead of going to actual concerts I find torrents for memories of other people who have attended them and upload them into the virtual reality chip implanted in my brain.

Rubber Snakes Produce the Electricity of the Future

ShakyJake says...

So, first we hook them all up in little cells so we can harvest their electricity. Next, we build a giant virtual reality network, to keep them complacent. Maybe put some monitors in there, to make sure none of them get out of line. Great idea, there's no way this can go wrong, right?

Devout Christians beware - Teh GAYZ are coming to your town!

videosiftbannedme says...

There seems to be a huge mixup between the ideas of "acceptance" and "promotion". No homosexuals are actively promoting the idea that you should go boink someone else in the ass, etc. No homosexual parents or peers raise their kids that they should be interested in the same sex; nor do they promote that idea. They only foster acceptance. They just want the right to fulfill their sexual desires like everyone else does and not be criticized for it.

It's like the Evolutionist vs. the Creationist argument. These are two completely different concepts, people. Abiogenesis vs. Creation; now you have an argument.

Imagine what we could get accomplished if we were all tolerant and didn't have to squabble over what we have no control over? Damnit, I could be in a virtual reality foursome with Anna Faris, Rachel McAdams and Melissa Theuriau by now...

Definitely hits all the right buttons for me. If only there were more of those types of videos on the Sift.
