Re: 20% dogma, patriarchy, and business. You could say the same for the pure sciences. To me, medicine is as much a science as physics and biology, with the difference that there is a professional/practice component that isn't there with the 'pure' sciences.

^Yes, how dare anyone question the all-knowing oracles of medical knowledge.

I think the reason that many geeky type people always toe the main-stream medical line is because they conflate medicine with science (which we all love). Yes, it's almost the same, but if I had to draw it as a venn diagram, there would be a crescent of over-hang. Medicine to me is 80% science and then the rest is filled in with dogma, patriarchy and business ($$).

That crescent of non-science is the part that makes me squirm. I don't think it's that wrong to question medical programs like vaccinations- with the idea that it may be being pushed non-scientifically by the medical industrial complex. (big pharma).

What does feminism mean? (User Poll by MycroftHomlz)

lucky760 says...

Why isn't feminism a bad thing? All the other "isms" like racism and sexism are very negative, but feminism, not so much. Based just on the words alone, it seems that there should be a lot of overlap in the Venn diagram of sexists and feminists.

All Aboard The Failboat! (Fail Talk Post)

Edeot says...

Sure, there are things that are Fail without being EIA, but still, I think if you would sort out the videos into a venn diagram, the overlap would be so great it would look something like this.

But hey, whatever - It's just another channel. I, for one, never really browse through channels.

Channel Maintenance (Sexuality Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

^actionpack - "Ball Flexin'"? Seriously? Whoever came up with that should be kicked in the sack. Tell us how much flex you notice.
Actionpack is just fine, and can easily exist as a channel on its own. Ball-flexing action is excellent.

^horrorshow - Does it get enough use to differentiate from movies? Would dw1117 be interested in merging horrorshow and grindhouse into something new?
I think this is good for anything creepy and scary.

^waronterror - The real world War on Terror isn't clearly defined so I don't see how a channel about it can ever be. Seems destined to be overused.
Agreed, but there are many, many videos that fit the description.

^wildwestshow - The description is written in choggish. What the fuck is this channel for? Get rid of it.
The channel is for anything country and western. Seems understandable enough?

^mystery - Seems to be used very infrequently and used sarcastically when it is.
I've used this once, it's much too specific, in my opinion. Same with grindhouse.

^spacy - Seems like a hybrid of ^wings and ^science.
The distinction between spacy and wings has been debated before, I definitely think it should stay.

I bet we could make a huge venn diagram showing all the different overlaps and the underlying hierarchy.. Hmm, I'm just gonna nerd it up a little bit with that.

Cap'n Crunch has supernatural milk absorption properties and sugar content. It is indeed the ideal of kid cereals. Well, maybe second to Cookie Crisp.

oh yeah - that is the funniest Venn diagram ever drawn. No, fools, don't try to show counter-examples - you will only fail.

Duplicate Ruling (Sift Talk Post)

dag says...

The main reason is because the the bigger clip contains all of the information of the little clip .

The little clip (if second) is only a subset of the first.

We would let a 2nd submitted longer clip go because it contains information not included in the little clip. I feel like I need a Venn diagram or something

>> ^Grimm:
>> ^dag:
It is a bit in the gray area, but I agree that in general a shorter clip of a longer version is in most cases a dupe.

Only if the longer clip is first. If the shorter clip is first and the longer clip has a significant amount of extra content they both stay.
Long clip first, short clip second - short clip gets killed.
Short clip first, long clip second - both videos get to stay.
My point is if it benefits the sift if both videos would be left alone in one scenario then why not the other?
Again let me clarify...we are talking about a significant difference in content. This one for example puts a focus on one question and answer from an entire 8-9 minute interview. If you look at the comments you can see it sparked a very decent debate that did not happen with the full interview.

And I really thought one of these geeks or nerds would have liked the titty venn diagram.

I've had a look at your lists and I understand that there is a distinction between the two ideas - and videos that would fall in one and not the other. However we still feel that the overlap is huge.

(If it was a Venn diagram, only a small crescent in each circle would be non-overlapped)

There is a bit of history here too. We originally called the geek channel "tech" but decided deliberately- about a month in to change it to Geek so it would be be more inclusive.

In reply to this comment by MarineGunrock:
Afterthoughts:

I still think there is a distinct need of a tech channel. My aim is to have videos that discuss technology - old or new, not just show it. The problem isn't that most of the tech videos are geek, it's that people put them in geek - the geek channel is being misused in my opinion. If you will, please review these two lists I have compiled from the first 6 or 7 pages of the geek sifted list. The first is of videos that I feel don't really belong in the geek channel, but would feel more at home in a tech channel.

_____________________________________________________________________________
This second list is for those which I feel do NOT belong in the tech channel, though people might feel urged to place them there - OR - videos that I feel the geek channel was created for.
While they may showcase technology, they don't discuss/explain it.

I do not wish to to be a stubborn prick about this issue, but it's just something that I feel strongly about. If you still don't want it, that's fine, but I was hoping we could put up another one of those polls you had a week ago. If not, I'll just go with "meme" like everyone wanted in Maatc's ST post.

The Problem with Gun Ownership (Blog Entry by dag)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I don't know Jwray- I have to say those stats are selective at best. What about comparing a country like Australia that has very strict gun licensing laws to a more liberal gun law society like the US?

Having lived near bad parts of LA, and near bad parts of Sydney I would take the country with less guns per capita in circulation.

When I walk into a cafe in Texas and half the good old boys are wearing side-arms, I would argue that I am less safe than I am in a cafe without the heat. (see the venn diagram above)

How many psycho slaughters is it going to take before the US realizes that guns don't kill people, people kill people - but they can do it much more efficiently with guns.

How about this simple analysis: All engineering is geek, but not all geek is engineering. That is, engineering is a subset of geek. Kind of like all rocknroll is music, but not all music is rocknroll. Too simplistic? Or am I making much ado about nothing?

In reply to this comment by gorgonheap:
Hey Oxi,
So I just sent a reply to the Cap about the Geek and Engineering channels and their respective domains. I don't really see it as a problem but perhaps a clarification of the video types we look for in our channels would be welcome if there is confusion. I'll draw the Venn diagram! Cheers!

To Cap:
Well the supreme authority of what Geek means (Miriam Webster dictionary:) 1: a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat or snake 2: a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked 3: an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity". There is quite an overlap between the two channels.

engineering covers a wide range (computers, mechanics, architecture.) And Geek covers many overlapping fields (computers, mechanics, LARP fest.) I'll talk to the pastry looking owner of sifts newest channel.

Regards!
