iPhone 4: The Dark Side of the Force

EMPIRE says...

Damn it. That was funny. Because is true.

It's ironic how Microsoft had this bad image, and was generally viewed as evil, and Bill Gates as the overlord of our tech demise, and Apple was the scrappy underdog, making do with ingenuity and originality.

Yet... Microsoft has actually made a pretty good product with Windows 7, Apple is producing hype-crap after hype-crap, Steve Jobs is now out as the asshole he is, and Bill Gates is using his fortune (and the fortune of others) to actually try to make the world a better place.

Oh.. how the tables have turned.

(let the flame war begin! )

Ultramarines - Teaser for Warhammer 40K Movie

gorillaman says...

>> ^xxovercastxx:

There really aren't any good guys in WH40K, though I'd say the Eldar are the most innocent.
>> ^gorillaman:
Also, the Imperium are not the good guys.

Exactly, though the Eldar are as xenophobic and ruthless as anyone else. The Tau are the obvious candidates as heroes - they're young, innovative, and they've got that underdog thing going, almost an idealised, progressive human race; but look closer and they're an ultra-communist slave society, aggressive and coercive in getting other races to join their Empire. If any race can claim innocence it can only be the Orks. They just dig fighting, and don't understand that other people don't like having their limbs hacked off.

Probably the best underdog performance of this World Cup. Looks like South Africa are on their way out Shame that they will probably become the first host nation to ever drop out at the group stage.

Glenn Greenwald Blasts Israel's Rationale for Seizing Gaza

Kesavaram says...

why Egypt, which chose to close its borders to Gaza isn't even remotely mentioned in the media?
What's the difference between 40 years and 200?
US should return the occupied native American lands
India should return some of its land to Nepal
China should return its occupied land to Tibet
Russia is almost 1/3 the size of land on earth.

Hypocrites
Everybody loves the underdog, the poor and helpless,
live in gaza for 1 week and get real
Because you have no fucking idea what's going on here.

Any Sifters bought an iPad? (Blog Entry by dag)

xxovercastxx says...

I don't universally scorn Apple, but they have been systematically tarnishing their own image for the last several years. I think the "vs" ads were the last positive thing they did in that regard.

Historically, Mac's bread and butter were the creative industries and now they're stifling the creativity of their users. They're driving off their faithful user base and now they're primarily left with the "snobby douchebag" market who only buys their stuff as a status symbol.

Then there's the lawsuits. They shut down Think Secret, went after Psystar and BluWiki, and most recently they've threatened Xiph. They're behaving like the RIAA.

Speaking of which, there's the DRM. They eventually caved and went DRM-free on their music, but not video content.

They're doing all these things as the free and open mindset is taking hold. They're fighting trends which are good for consumers and they still have the audacity to act like their shit don't stink. The iPad probably wouldn't be such a huge joke if they hadn't hyped it up like the Segway.

Just a few years ago they launched the iPod. MP3 players had been around for a while and other companies even had far superior products, but they marketed the iPod well and managed to become ubiquitous. They were the epitome of "hip"; now they look out of touch. The iPad unveiling reminds me of McCain's green screen speech.

Look, there is one very big mistake that Apple has made. They are losing the culture war. VideoSift skews a bit younger than me - I think the median age is about 29 - and the dislike and mistrust of Apple seems to be pretty universal among you all. We can blame the closed nature of the iPhone OS, those douchy "Mac vs. PC" ads, or maybe just that Apple is no longer the beleaguered, scrappy underdog. For whatever reason, hearts and minds are not with Apple at the moment.

Yes, because selling independent games was never profitable until Apple offered to play morality police and charge you 30% for the privilege.

And for all the squealing about Jobs' choke-hold on the platform - it's good to remember that Apple has empowered a whole generation of "little guy" developers to make good money from the app ecosystem - wresting power from the established game behemoths like EA. Good luck making a little game on other platforms - AND actually making dosh from it. The same kind of disruption-- upsetting the applecart of the big publishing companies-- appears to be in the works for self-published authors.

We can argue the economics all day- I would say that the scale of the Apple App environment dwarves any bright spots you find for particular independent game developers.

A "give Steve Jobs your money" tribute video.

ForgedReality says...

I already explained what I meant. He won't allow Flash on his mobile devices, because he believes HTML5 will be superior. But why not have both? Why not empower your users? He is quoted as saying Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. Okay, even if that's true, wouldn't it be in your best interest to work with the vendor to help improve the product for your users' sake? It's like he's holding top secret documents and he won't let anyone have a look. I can understand not wanting to pay licensing fees or whatnot to get DirectX on your platform, and I wasn't trying to assert one way or the other which is better (DX or OGL).

Back in the day, I was all for OpenGL because it was the open-sourced (although, not entirely) underdog, and I loved it when a game would come out in OpenGL. Quake is one example I can think of at the moment. It was awesome. The colored lighting was one option that easily made it stand out, where DirectX barely handled poly accelleration.

Then, one day, DirectX progressed faster than OpenGL did, and every developer embraced it as the language of choice. Now, it's really hard to get anything in OpenGL, and if OpenGL has come to a point where it rivals DirectX, feature- and performance-wise, I would gladly use it over DirectX, regardless of the platform, as I use both Macs and Windows. Although, for gaming, at the moment, Windows stands high above MacOS in that regard.

That, I think, is the fatal flaw with this series. PC is the loveable underdog. Mac - is douchey, sarcastic hipster. Entertaining, but frames the argument poorly.

In my subjective experience- Mac users tend to be the nerdy misfits in the office. Windows is the gum-chewing sales and marketing guy with the shiny suit and bluetooth headset.

Which character is more lovable? The funny and crazy PC guy or the obnoxious Mac twat? Also, did you know that these days Steve Jobs lives on a diet of 100% raw human meat? His cult followers fight for the chance to offer their fat and bloated bodies to him.

Young Turks Analysis of Epic Beard Man

Is it sad that a veteran of war is now languishing in mental instability? Of course.

Does the prior fact have anything to do with the point of this video? No.

This is a video about the underdog. It reminds me of multiple videos on the Sift that have plenty of votes, in which the underdog wins the battle.

It's not racist.
It's not deplorable.

It's Oakland.

I disagree with Anna calling EBM a loser. He's mentally ill and has some problems, yes, but that doesn't make him a loser. You don't know how he came to be the man he is.
I also disagree that the beating was excessive. He put the guy down and then he walked away. I'd say that actually shows him to be somewhat lucid. When you're in a fight like that, especially when you're defending yourself, you're just an animal. The adrenaline pumps and it's fight or flight. Once the switch flips, it's hard to just turn it off. I'm an excessively passive person and I don't think even I could have turned it off that easily.
I don't think anyone is really idolizing EBM, he's just an intriguing character. Even without the fight, he's a crazy old man wearing a shirt that says "I am a motherfucker". You've got to wonder what his deal is when you see something like that. He's also the underdog in the fight, and everyone loves an underdog.

You must not understand US law. Both parties are guilty of something.

http://definitions.uslegal.com/m/mutual-affray/

A mutual affray is fighting by two or more persons. Intent to fight on part of both parties is required. Where evidence shows that one party acted in self-defense, that party is not guilty of mutual affray. The aggressor may be guilty of assault and battery, but neither party is guilty of mutual affray. State laws vary, but mutual affray may be a mitigating factor or defense to family abuse.

Had the white man not said anything and the black man attacked him, then he would have been in the clear under self defense. And the flip side is right for the black man. But they both actively engaged in the instigation, ergo both are party to the affray.

I'm not a lawyer, but this is how I interpreted the law.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affray

In many legal jurisdictions related to English common law, affray is a public order offence consisting of the fighting of two or more persons in a public place to the terror (in French: à l'effroi) of ordinary people (the lieges). Depending on their actions, and the laws of the prevailing jurisdiction, those engaged in an affray may also render themselves liable to prosecution for assault, unlawful assembly, or riot; in that event it is for one of these offences that they are usually charged.[1]

...

In the United States the English common law as to affray applies, subject to certain modifications by the statutes of particular states. [3][1]
