Richard Herring - Racists Are More Liberal Than You

00Scud00 says...

Kind of funny, but he misses the one crucial point about racists, which is that even if the racist sees all Asians as Chinese, or all dark skinned people as black, the racist still hates them all. So while they do come closer to bringing the world together as one, it's mostly just a more expedient way of dividing the world into one big group of Us and another big group of Them.
Also, no matter how funny you are, that mustache still makes you look like a twat.

Yeah man I didn't think anything of it. It's a sign of friendship to me because Twat is a funny word, don't worry about what anyone else says about that crap, they're not me.

Could this obvious hypocritical double-standard applied to users who disgust you speak to a fundamental personality flaw which makes you just as anti-social as you accuse others of being?

Could pushing the rules of the sift to the brink indicate a personal loathing of anyone who has an opinion other than your own that you then personally deem 'unworthy' of your time when it could have been a springboard for another direction in this thread?

Maybe not, you gave Yogi time enough to label him 'twat' (which I suppose isn't so bad since 'twat' is socially acceptable in jest, etc. in certain countries.

Use that term with reference to a woman in America and see how long it takes your nose to flow red.

How about ya go feed yer bunny and who cares why people of faith bother you so much, sounds like a personal malfunction. Perhaps everything really is, all about you.

Wolfenstein The New Order

Asmo says...

Who said anything about "thought provoking meaningful experience"? =)

You're doing what all classic internet "experts" (ie. arrogant twats who think their opinion is the last word on everything) do, creating a fallacious argument to launch your scathing invective at while missing the point entirely. If you tried to bolt depth on to a title like Wolfenstein, you'd be undermining the core of the game, which is Nazi destroying mayhem. Do you really need a complex story arc giving you motivation to kill a thousand mecha-SS riding T-Rexs? Of course not.

A game does not require depth to be fun. Certainly there are plenty of indie games that also indulge in the "no depth all action" genre (http://www.crimsonland.com/ as a classic example).

I do have to correct one error in my previous post however, it's not a stick up your ass. It's your head... ; )

LiquidDrift said:

Haha, OK when you aren't picking up a BFG and killing off *insert ridiculous nazi baddies* in the last act, then you can come back here and tell me how wrong I was and what a thought provoking meaningful experience the game is.

I'll be playing some indie games that are actually trying to do something more interesting than shooting anything that moves.

I have accepted consequences of my tirades in the past-Trying really hard to play 'NICE' children, got a few years on your "polite' asses as well. Your hate doesn't fool anyone, in fact it seethes with every comment made.

Bothof you continue to ignore or otherwise discount sincere private messages, yet you come out in public to try and destroy my opinions and observations with personal attacks. what's up with that, eh??

Not being paranoid, it's simply a crude, rude, passive-aggressive discourtesy.

noam chomsky-confronted by right wing zombie

SDGundamX says...

Actually, I was the one to ridicule the guy. I've never considered myself a class act. And @enoch specifically said he felt "twat" was too harsh, so I'm not sure why you're targeting him.

If you're referring to the title, though, I think it's pretty accurate. This guy is regurgitating right-wing bullshit media points without any thinking or attempt to validate the statements' truth on his own (hence, he's a zombie--attacking mindlessly, as zombies are wont to do). And because he didn't bother to check those facts for himself, he gets thoroughly (but politely) schooled here.

Yet, despite this schooling, he continues to cling to his completely misinformed beliefs about Chomsky.

He seems not interested in truth so much as clinging to a particular worldview that he's apparently heavily invested in. You know, actually, I've come to agree with you: he shouldn't be ridiculed... he should be pitied.

SDGundamX says...

Happy to be the 10th vote for this.

That guy was a total twat. I only wish the camera had showed his face so that if I passed him on the street I could call him out for being a twat.

The actual comment from Paul Robinson in the New York Times in 1979 (which Chomsky paraphrased in this talk) is as follows:

"Judged in terms of the power, range, novelty and influence of his thought, Noam Chomsky is arguably the most important intellectual alive today. He is also a disturbingly divided intellectual. On the one hand there is a large body of revolutionary and highly technical linguistic scholarship, much of it too difficult for anyone but the professional linguist or philosopher; on the other, an equally substantial body of political writings, accessible to any literate person but often maddeningly simple-minded. The 'Chomsky problem' is to explain how these two fit together."

Chomsky's coming to Japan next month and my wife and I are going to try to see him give a talk on linguistics (unfortunately his other talk on democracy and capitalism booked up as soon as it was announced).

How to behave in traffic

Chairman_woo says...

I'm no expert but everything I've ever heard/read from informed sources (i.e. people who study these things rather than random people on the internet) concurs with exactly you you just said there.

Traffic Jams supposed to act like longitudinal waves that snowball as they go due to people driving too close and needing to overcompensate. i.e. what starts as a few people braking a bit too much becomes 100's of people at a standstill a few miles down the line of traffic.

I think you are entirely correct to suggest that if everyone maintained a healthy distance and steady pace traffic would flow considerably more smoothly and many jams wouldn't even happen in the 1st place.

There are choke points but these need never take up more than a lane if people had some perspective and collective sympathy....

Unfortunately they don't and most (or at least enough) tend to drive like the impatient selfish twats they are. This makes biking gently past all of them in their self inflicted gridlock misery all the more satisfying (wouldn't be the 1st time I've sung the Trololol song while doing so either )

Rawhead said:

IDK why you guys cant see or understand what this dude is saying.

Stop and go, stop and go traffic starts a chain reaction that just waves along in reverse FOREVER. If everybody was to move along at a slow, steady, and constant speed, traffic would clear up very quickly.

I am a truck driver, and my motto has always been. If people would think collectively, instead of independently. there would be no such thing as traffic.

The Real News: Chris Hedges on The Pathology of the Rich

alcom says...

I don't think you're grumpy, radx. Granted, my posts tend to have that same ominous tone, in general so I guess I'm a grump too. If you really think about the scale of inequality today, the absolute plundering the ultra-rich enjoyed during the recent recession and the efforts to keep money in politics to perpetuate this cycle with brilliant tools like Citizens United, it's hard not to be bleak.

Unfortunately, what we like to call democracy simply does not have the teeth to affect meaningful change. I am encouraged by the relative economic performance from the list of countries that have scrapped first past the post (reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional_representation ) except for maybe Portugal, but even with more effective elections there is still an extra seat for the rich in every government.

Even more unfortunate will be the painful revolution the world will endure to either change from capitalism to some other form of economics (maybe resourced-based, a-la Peter Joseph.) If we don't simply slide obediently into greater and greater concentrations of wealth for the ultra-rich, we get closer and closer to revolution. But all it will take will be one upheaval to spur the revolution into action, be it:
- another, even more severe recession (maybe the EU will implode, taking the world economy down with it)
- severe global warming positive feedback loop from the arctic methane stores
- nuclear war

And who the hell knows what else might set people off. Maybe a solar flare will fry all the satellites in orbit and the lack of new tweets will create a world-wide frenzy of irate twats. And who knows when it will happen. Maybe 5 years, maybe 50 years. Since money pulls the strings, I think we're doomed to guess as to the source of VoodooV's "tipping point."

radx said:

Also, keep an eye on the island of bliss(ful ignorance) within Europe: Germany. We're heading straight for a grand coalition that would control ~80% of parliament, rendering all instruments at the opposition's disposal inert. Did I mention they also have the neccessary 2/3 majority to institute changes to our constitution? Fucking awesome!
