Absolutely fascinating that he could pinpoint a very distinct threshold between "nope, can't do it" and "oh yeah, that's how that works". I bet behavioral psychologists / neurologists would love to develop experiments that test to see if other people notice the same phenomenon...

Cuba's DIY Inventions from 30 Years of Isolation

That was absolutely fascinating -- great sift!

A few random thoughts:
-If any video has ever better demonstrated the idiom "necessity is the mother of invention", I don't know what it is.
-Castro was very very clever to anticipate the technological needs of his people and have the army print that "field guide" book that spurred on greater independent development.
-Some of the things they came up with remind me of working on my family farm. Every day is an exercise in problem solving -- how to solve problem A given a set of tools/resources B. And often the things in B don't really lend themselves towards A... So you end up hammering in a nail with a brick, or patching a friction hole in a metal pipe with a few layers of plastic from a 2 liter bottle and duct tape.
-That artist Oroza is a great combination of artist, historian, archeologist, and storyteller.

I'm absolutely fascinated by LSD. From its mind-opening effects (at least two Nobel Prize winners were under the influence when they made their discoveries) to its analgesic properties (recent research suggests it doesn't stop pain, but your brain just stops caring about the pain) it just seems like something we should be paying more attention to. Its unfortunate that, thanks to the US government's attempts to stop the "hippies" LSD was made illegal even for legitimate scientific study (except in rare cases) all over the world. I'm so glad that a few organizations (some in Canada, some in Switzerland and some elsewhere) have begun to ignore these insane, knee-jerk laws to do serious research into LSD.

Instant upvote for Blessed. I envy that man.

There was this episode of QI, I haven't managed to find it yet, where they did a whole bit on him. Absolutely fascinating dude, completely fucking bonkers, has broken records climbing mountains, has 2000 creatures living in his house. He's one of my heroes for sure!
