The Final Solution to the Probie problem (Cult Talk Post)

>> ^gwiz665:
Does the picard maneuver
The issue is that people who are not siftizens should not have the same value as those who are.
The site is built on a community, where people participate in some way, through comments, sifts, talks and so on, but these hit-and-run voters are not participating anything but the dilution of every other vote. The ukulele-jake video is artificially held at an all time #1, when over half of the votes for it are from users who have contributed nothing but that particular vote - not even logged in since then.

I don't want to disenfranchise every probie, but I would like to see these hit-and-run voters quashed. My original method was to punish all probies, but obviously this is a bad solution. Some form of activity filter of probies would be preferable. I think that the drive-by probies are a blight on our otherwise pristine community.

Oh gwiz, we know you're just dying to perform an illegal discard command followed by a two-week-ban on yourself for your video assassination attempt.

Sorry, I've been reading this book lately.

How odd that a book which exposes the US involvement in assassinating so many people around the world should be so obscure...

Well it's not extremely difficult to find a good video..and in my proposal I did not state that it has to be necessary to have a sifted first post to be able to participate: a video in the (personal) queue should be good enough..I think this extra (yet easy) step makes community participation a lot more probable..

>> ^lucky760:
It's probably before your time gwiz, and I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it, but we already tried instituting a system like this a couple years ago. That was actually how the Probie system started. The problem with it was it made it extremely difficult for well intentioned new members to participate because they'd have to struggle to find a good video to get published, even if all they wanted to do was participate with votes and comments. Needless to say, our new memberships almost flat-lined.
And as dag said, this is a rare event. There is no sock puppetry going on with the Long Gone video. It's just that the video creator has a lot of fans/supporters (just as Jake Shimabukuro did) that he asked to help promote it. Since dag is the submitter (at the creator's request [he actually read the posting guidelines instead of just self-linking]), there're officially no shenanigans to redress.

U.S. History, Chapter 17: The Presidency of George W. Bush (History Talk Post)

12675 says...

Pre-9/11- did not do his homework, and take urgent pleas seriously. he could have done a bit more it may hve helped
On 9/11- did not act like a leader. Was confused, shell shocked in a classroom, instead of immediately addressing etc. Popped up at different locations with poorly written speeches.
Post 9/11- did not listen to advice of both consvervative and liberal legal advice as to how to handle dealing with Al Qaeda in an effective manner.
Was totally over run by the V.P. and Neo-conseravative ideologues that saw 9/11 as their ideal laboratory to test their ideas of Democracy through force- eventually invade Iraq in order to spread democracy

Post9/11- Squandered the compassion of a very sympathetic world, spat in their face and said we will do things OUR way. Probably his biggest mistake of all- a war on terror would require the collective ideas of all of our close allies. Therefore "go it alone" was just plain stupid and impulsive.

He ended up with the following allies: Britain (but not the people), Vanuatu, Georgia, Romania, Poland.... hmmm
Completely bungled capturing the highest value Al Qaeda cadres, took recources away, and shifted focus on Iraq
Went to Iraq, despite overwelming intelligence pointing out that this would be a very very risky move.
Went anyway, and had no preparations for post-war, or marshall law, or counterinsurgency. Surge FINALLY was adopted, but after country was ruined by civil war. He was advised over and over to go with 3-400,000 troops.
Again, he could not assert himself and Rumsfeld walked all over him.

Fieth, Woo, Cheney and other sinister characters appealed to Bush's cruel (134 deathpen cases in Texas) side in order to extract information. Instead of listening to those with years of interrogation experience he prefered to "take the gloves off" too prove a point instead of winning a war of ideologies. Because of Torture, Extraordinary Rendition, and the imprisonment of 1000s of innocent villagers subjected to the worst aspects of American culture- heavy metal, sleazy sex, humiliation- America lost its moral compass in the eyes of other countries. This is the America that organized and held together the Nuremburg Trials. Nazis, accused of far worse crimes than blowing up planes - such as the death of 30,million plus civilians, cutting out peices of brains of twins to see what would happen, forcing sex changes to see what would happen, gassing Jews as a Final Solution etc. One of the greatest defeats, and battles won during WWII was the right of the accused war criminals to face their accusers. Somehow we find that a motley group of somewhat half assed Arab terrorists merit far greater measures???WTF?

So, with no clout, no economic or energy visions, no moral authority, no authority whatsoever -here is what the next president will have to fix:

Dealing with a now Powerful Russia. Powerful Iran. American ridiculed by such people as (and this is embarrassing) President Chavez.... Basically, no one had any respect for him. Putin took him for a ride ("I saw his soul") KGB agents dont have souls...

People may not have liked Truman, or Lincoln, or Nixon for that matter, but they all had at least some degree of respect- even Nixon. Despite Watergate, many admire Nixon despite his being a bit crazy. Bush has none. No Respect, not a good prospect for historical significance.

Evolution May Be True, But I Don't Believe In It

drattus says...

Equilibrionist, based on what I see here I'd guess you might be projecting a bit. You can't manage to make a comment or a post without someone being lonely science nerds, a bunch of arrogant fucks, a nerd/digger/elitist asshole, and so on, and it's not even good enough for you to make generic comments about a type you don't like but you've got to name names as well. My guess would be that either outside of your own echo chamber acting like that doesn't make you a hell of a lot of friends or you're one of those who take the anonymity of the internet as license to act like an ass, treat people in a way you never would to their face. Either way you're out of line here.

All of your jive about elitists won't change some simple facts. Science has never claimed to have all of the answers, it claims to be in search of them. It's not about a final solution to anything so much as it's about the process of exploring and figuring out how things work. You think science denies God? Not really. It ignores God. Lots of scientists do deny him, the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause and so on but science itself doesn't really care. All it tries to answer is how things work and 'magic man did it' answers nothing, it's irrelevant. If you or anyone else want to claim outside of classrooms and on your own time that someone set the rules things work by in place I don't think science really cares. It's just about what we can show about the way the world works.

It doesn't claim to be perfect, to be final, to be anything more than a process of searching for answers, a method. If someone claims it does provide anything final rather than "as far as we know" that's their problem. If something happens a million times in a row there's always that small chance that the million and first will be the exception and science accounts for that. When a result happens that contradicts prior info we've got to account for it and we do. If it isn't contradicted after much exploration it's considered solid to varying degrees depending on the situation unless or until it is contradicted.
