Weed? At a concert??

Stormsinger says...

It's really weird, but out of the 5 or 6 concerts I've seen since I moved here to St Louis, all but one appeared to be completely smoke free. I say weird, because I -never- saw a smoke-free concert in 20 years of concerts back in Kansas City. Even odder, earlier today I was wondering about this very phenomenon, musing to my wife about whether it was the times, or the location that made the difference. After reading all of the previous posts, it's pretty clear that it's the location.

Strong thunderstorm forms over Seattle

Stormsinger says...

What we have here is a prime example of the fact that words mean different things in different regions of the US. Here in St Louis, a "thunderstorm" requires serious thunder. In Seattle, one small clap is enough to qualify...and two makes it a "big thunderstorm".

I love Seattle immensely and would give much to move there, but I have to say that I'd really miss the Midwest thunderstorms (they're about the only part of the Midwest I like).

Tom Waits "Hold On"

gwiz665 says...

They hung a sign up in out town
"if you live it up, you won't
live it down"
So, she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Well, the moon was gold, her
Hair like wind
She said don't look back just
Come on Jim
(Chorus)
Oh you got to
Hold on, Hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
You gotta hold on
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone is looking for someone to blame
But you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said baby, I still love you
Sometimes there's nothin left to do
Oh you got to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you got to
Just hold on.

Well, God bless your crooked little heart St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken-china voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Well, you build it up, you wreck it down
You burn your mansion to the ground
When there's nothing left to keep you here, when
You're falling behind in this
Big blue world
Oh you go to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
You got to hold on
Down by the Riverside motel,
It's 10 below and falling
By a 99 cent store she closed her eyes
And started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Well your old hometown is so far away
But, inside your head there's a record
That's playing, a song called
Hold on, hold on
You really got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here
And just hold on.

I sent this to my friend Malcolm who is in charge of an AmeriCorp "platoon" in St Louis. I'm planning to go visit in about a month. I hope he can sneak me into one of the assassin training programs for a day or two.

Giant Marijuana Crop Found in Chicago Forest Preserve

TheFreak says...

As long as I live I will never forget the front page newspaper photo, when I was a kid, of a truckload of marijuana being destroyed by police in St. Louis. They decided to pile it all up in a huge heap in the parking lot and set it on fire. The police were in a ring around the burning pile, assumably to keep away the public. The photo showed a massive cloud of smoke being blown sideways by the wind and completely obscuring one side of the ring of cops.

Must of been a hell of a day at the old precinct.

Black Woman Gets Attacked At Town Hall Meeting, Police Fail

lampishthing says...

Now I... I dunno, not having been there and not having seen all the facts, what role race played in that - but I think it's fair to say:

1. Any of us would be pretty angry
2. That the St. Louis police acted pretty stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own town hall.

Maddow: Healthcare Bill Intmidation Taking Dangerous Turn

NetRunner says...

That's actually what the left's organizations are putting out, that it's absolutely critical that we not match shouting with shouting, and fight the incivility with civility.

Like I said elsewhere, I think the right move is to just observe and report, and drive the narrative to be about the deceptiveness and crude anti-democratic nature of what's being done.

However, I do think it's worth noting that the right inciting angry mobs to intimidate our politicians and supporters in the hope of shutting down rational conversation crosses an important line between peaceful, rowdy political activism and thuggery and intimidation.

I can't imagine anyone who said anything like this or this would retain any kind of position of authority or respect in the progressive movement.

Fox News is already talking up this incident as if it's an example of Union "thugs" trying to beat down righteous protesters.

Why the hell can't we just have a public debate on the merits of the issue? I hunger for a real, reasonable debate, but it doesn't seem like the other side wants to engage on the merits, just with lies, fear, and now outright intimidation.

I think you are lacking quite a few variables in determining whether or not its a coincidence. Crime is more a product of poverty than it is race, and this bit of "facting" only perpetuates the fallacy that the color of a persons skin should a determining factor in how dangerous you think they are. Racism isn't the issue here, its ignorance on a whole.

It happens when someone taps on the glass outside the liberal thought-prism created by mainstream media, Hollywood garbage and government schools.

So outside of news, fiction, and school (government school? is that like public school?) what is there? Faux News, propaganda, and Christian school? Reality has a liberal bias.

Red Light Runners - Police Video

BcrdNCola says...

I'm originally from the St. Louis metro area (unfortunately) and can attest to how idiotic a lot of the drivers are there. Most of these intersections aren't that difficult to see a red light from a considerable distance away.. No blind corners or anything. These people have no excuse for running these lights other than being morons and not paying attention.

The last clip really gets me though. That asshole was driving way too fast for a school zone. If he had been doing the speed limit he would have seen the red light and been able to slow down enough to avoid going through the intersection.
