Ronda Rousey's Thoughts on Fighting a Man and Equality

Asmo says...

Because they aren't dropped.

If a man and woman can't step in to the ring against each other, there are two different divisions of each weight which women fight in. I think having one division would be problematic, even once you get past the awful spectacle of men beating women and women beating men.

But to claim that it's now sexless is BS, you cannot have two bantamweight champions of the exact same division.

I'm not really sure why we we're trivialising the fact that they dropped the "women's"/"men's" labels.

star wars prequel-nostalgia critic gets owned by Mr plinkett

Truckchase says...

I had never heard of "thatguywithglasses" (and thank fucking goodness) before this, but after seeing this guy utter absolute bullshit while wearing my traditional nerd uniform I finally understand why idiots like "The Big Bang Theory".

This guy isn't a nerd, he's a awkward apologist who is stuck in his own, entirely unproductive world featuring whatever pop culture spectacle coupled with his shallow thoughts.

On the other hand, despite being a psycho hooker murderer, Mr. Plinkett is one of us.

Now I'm worried that when I'm in my 60s I'll want to murder a hooker. Ugh, pop culture confuses me.

Need More Proof That The Music Industry Is Fake? Here You Go

Jinx says...

Whaaaaaaaat? You mean that Britney wasn't singing live while jumping around the stage under hot lights for an hour and a bit without being able to hear your voice at all? Scandal!

I can barely talk after doing that sort of exercise, never mind sing. You can bemoan that her stage shows are more about dancing and spectacle than the music, but I think that says more about her fans expectations than her ability as a singer.

Autotune annoys me because it's indicative of an obsession with the voice. My favorite pop artist at the moment, Sia, happens to be a great singer, but I think I like her music not just because of the way her voice cracks but also because I know that she penned the lyrics and melody. If I found out she autotuned parts of her album I don't really think I'd care.

Rewrite: Bad police reporting by the NYTimes

highdileeho says...

The NYT reporter implies pretty clearly that other witnesses say that the cop did not grab Brown by the throat. If you actually take the time to read the article (anyone...did anyone actually read it?) the point of the piece was not to show a handwringing bias, it was to show that the trial is going to be clouded with conflicting stories, and that we need to step back from any kneejerk reaction that we may feel from just one piece of testimony; a concept that is lost to O'Donnell who only interviewed people who had similar stories. He could have gotten the other witnesses' testimony, but no, he just makes assumptions that align himself with his demographic. It shouldn't be surprising that O'Donnell doesn't understand the nuances of print, because he's never actually been journalist. It was eye-rolling to see him sit up there in the beginning of the piece and claim to be an authority on the inner workings of print journalism when he's never actually stepped foot in a press room. The whole spectacle was eye rolling to anyone who would be at all interested in looking for some unbiased information.

Honest Trailers - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

RedSky says...

I feel like the current crop of superhero flicks are sacrificing too much in the way of character development for spectacle and more characters. I was honestly surprised by the reception to The Avengers as it felt like it could have been directed by Michael Bay. I suppose it's too much to wish for more superhero movies in the style of Watchmen, particularly given how badly it did.

I thought CA:TWS had some good set piece scenes, but ultimately fell into the same camp (threadbare plot! more under-developed characters! more explosions!). The deeper themes I saw some reviewers vouch for (surveillance vs. security) seemed horribly superficial.

man, I can't even be bothered derailing that video anymore.

I do think it's odd that @gorillaman accuses anyone who disagrees with him of being "intellectually and morally subhuman" and then calls me "a shallow, gawping spectacle-whore", but somehow I am the one that loves drama.

The strange misapprehension that I give a fuck continues for reasons unknown....

Stay on the defensive and let's explore this bail-out a bit more please-You chime-in as you are want to do for at least an hour of two a day, you obviously love drama when it's not directed at yourself, and love to stir-up and/or foment self-satisfying discord...HEY, I find your roll somewhat familiar and otherwise stinky and generally foul-tasting on the pallet...Care to defend your manner and comfort-zone??

No protests from a cadre of familiars yet??...Give em a few ticks. We're sure to witness them they'll jump right aboard the boat to Stroke-and-Polish island, where all such balls are caressed and cared-for with covetous enthusiasm...

gorillaman says...

Would you say drawing random hands of cards is what makes poker interesting?

Racing, by whatever limited definition I assume you're using that excludes all application of intellect, isn't one tenth of Formula 1.

Actually attending the events, incidentally, is quite the wrong way to appreciate the complexities of the game. It seems to me that you're nothing more than a shallow, gawping spectacle-whore.

ChaosEngine said:

Well, that's a useful and well though out comment.

Racing is what makes F1 interesting, and quite frankly, this kind of bullshit is exactly why it's viewership is declining.

I used to be a huge F1 fan. I've actually been to two grand prix (Hungarian and German) and even I don't really watch it anymore.

Fireworks filmed with a drone

My_design says...

I read the article and while he mentions a couple of ridiculous things like redirecting a firework, he does have several valid points. The fact that the quad may have been flying inside a zoned area is certainly a valid claim. There is also the fact that he most certainly was flying over an occupied area, which while not a crime is a bit of a no no, unless he has the insurance to cover it if it all goes wrong. I get a little upset/nervous when guys go behind the flight line at an an RC airshow and those guys probably have more experience than this guy.
But the one thing I can see that is most certainly an issue and could bring down the FAA on his butt is that he most certainly broke 500 feet in altitude. Since most large fireworks detonate at 1,000 to 1,200 feet and he was right there with them, I'd put his at well over 500 feet. That's a problem, and considering the recent FAA guidance that was slammed down and pissed everyone off, the last thing we need is more people doing this sort of spectacle. It will just make things worse.

Thumper said:

Read the comments in the Forbes article. It's a ridiculous article. That drone doesn't pose any danger to anyone or the fireworks themselves. As high as that drone is flying the only thing that could have happened is a firework could have been ever so slightly out of place when it exploded. The writer of that article is a prick. It doesn't need to be pointed out that it could be considered illegal - no one gives a shit. Especially the person who is risking their expensive drone to capture that amazing video. No one would have even known there was a drone up there if it weren't for the video. He goes on to suggest how it may beckon others to attempt flying their drones through future fireworks displays.

Hard Not To Like WWE Wrestling After This

Yogi says...

OH come on don't try to be like me. Yeah I think Cena is an outlier but my point is they don't market his stuff all that heavily so they could be doing more marketing than they do, but they don't because I think they realize it can be invasive.

I don't like the WWE specifically because they're bad at this wrestling thing now, they want to be all about the spectacle and nothing of substance. Which was basically your critique and I was more or less agreeing with you while pointing out certain things that make you look like a dick.

Because that's what's fun for me.

budzos said:

You're going to use an outlier like John Cena to make your general case? That doesn't seem intelligent.

What's more, anyone who makes a joke like "Only the WWE could get me to cheer for Cancer!" and then gets offended by what I've said can suck my dick. Fuck you Yogi. i'm serious. You sanctimonious cunt.

Obama Delivers at the White House Correspondents' Dinner

lantern53 says...

All Voodoo knows how to do is push buttons, which makes him a troll.

Also, I never said gays had to suck it up. I said they need to just live their lives, be responsible, don't make a spectacle of themselves and they will earn respect.

But Voodoo apparently respects anything and everything no matter how perverse. So his avatar is pretty appropriate for him as it looks like a toy made for a small boy.

Feigning an injury at its finest

Yogi says...

"Rugby player does his best to get a penalty called against the other team. I'm surprised teams and or players aren't penalized for faking it."

I'm surprised the guy wasn't penalized for taking a shot, he took it, it doesn't matter that he missed and the guy faked it. The referee used his personalty in this to tell the guy to get up and get on with it. This looks like a professional game with a professional referee that has been in the league for years. Likely knows all the players by name, and chats with them during the game.

It may not be by the book but at the professional level there's a lot of grey areas, the idea is the game is a spectacle and that's what the audience is paying for. Referees are there to make sure the game is fair, and to produce an event. This referee didn't ruin the game, he kept it going and kept the players honest. I say good for him, players respect him and his decision, and we move on.

And I sit here wishing to GOD that I reffed Rugby instead of Soccer. Because if this happened in soccer, both teams would be surrounding me whining constantly and they would never shut up.

Open Letter to Ellen Degeneres: Don't Promote A Psychic

Shepppard says...

Definitely would.. if only she hadn't turned down the offer to take the Randi test.

From Wiki:

"In 2012, the James Randi Educational Foundation awarded Caputo a Pigasus Award for being, in its view, the "psychic" performer who fooled the greatest number of people with the least effort in the preceding year. A Pigasus award was also given to TLC for continuing to air the show.[59] In an article published by Wired Magazine the organization's founder James Randi explained why he believed shows like Long Island Medium were deceptive and potentially harmful to its participants:

Why do these pseudo-psychic spectacles bother those of us at the James Randi Educational Foundation? First, and foremost: They are not true. [...] But much more importantly to us, such performances seem to prey on people at their most vulnerable moments — those who have suffered the loss of loved ones — and these mediums use such grief to make a buck. Psychologists tell us this keeps the grieving stuck in their grief, rather than going through the natural stages of acceptance that are healthy.
—James Randi[1]

In June of that year, Caputo appeared in a commercial for Priceline.com in which she portrayed herself "connecting" with the late Priceline Negotiator character previously played by William Shatner.[60] However, this commercial has sparked controversy, since the commercial appears to make light of the Native American belief of smudging.[61] JREF President DJ Grothe issued a statement decrying Priceline.com: "It is difficult to watch the show and not feel heartbroken for those who are desperate to hear from the departed... and even more so if they are being manipulated by a charlatan." Grothe urged the organization to have their new spokeswoman take the James Randi Million Dollar Challenge and prove her paranormal claims."
