Sticker shock: Why are glasses so expensive?

catbutt says...

Good to know, I've been wondering why out of pocket cost has been going up and up over the last few years for the same cheap frames. After insurance, I'm still paying hundreds of bucks for the sh!tty frames and crappy lens options.

F!ck this company, I'll go to the other monopoly if I have to - WalMart!

That bald guy denies everything. If you said "Anna Kournikova was pretty hot back in her day", he would reply "Iiiiii... would not say this was true." Sleazy douchestick.

Dimitri the Lover : The movie preview (real, I think)

pumkinandstorm says...

This same guy (Dimitri) approached me when I was walking down that same street in the video!!! Within about 10 seconds of talking to me, he asked me to have sex with him! I said I wasn't interested and he handed me his sleazy business card (advertising that he is Toronto's greatest lover and seducer) with a link to his website http://www.dimitrithelover.com/ Ok, so I was kind of tempted just to see what the hell the site was about...SO NASTY.

Reid Hitting Romney Hard Over (Possibly) Unpaid Taxes

Mashiki says...

It's a win-win for Reid. Either he goes on saying Mittens is dirty until it sticks or Romney releases his returns and gets made out to be a sleazy bastard anyways since he probably legally paid 15% or much less.

Obviously Reid has a serious Pederasty issue he needs to clear up. And it's up to him to prove it, I heard that it's true. And he still beats his wife, so when is he going to come clean and stop beating his wife?

Shocking message from Westboro Baptist Church

Westboro Baptist Church: Trolling for lawsuit $$$ since 1955.

These clowns used to make me get really upset until I realized that they were just a new breed of sleazy, ambulance-chaser type lawyers with a new gimmick: provoke / piss people off until they 'assault' you, sue, repeat.

Police Video: No Blood, Bruises On George Zimmerman

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Got a whole bunch of people who are defending Zimmerman not because they feel he's innocent, but because he used a gun

There may be those out there who are only interested in defending Zimmerman because he had a gun. Just like there are those out there who are only attacking Zimmerman because Martin was black. It'd be nice if such slimeballs didnt' exist - but whaddya do? All you can do is point it out, condemn the bums, and encourage others to ignore them. Personally, I'm not defending Zimmerman because he used a gun. I'm simply not willing to just assume he's guilty based on hyped up misinformation (see CNN, NBC, CBS, etc...).

Self Defense claims tripling should be indicative that you got some problems on your hands.

I tend to agree. The SYG laws - like most laws - has fundamental flaws. The "Pro Martin" version of the story is that Zimmerman was following Martin with a deliberate attempt to provoke a confrontation and kill him in "self defense". If that's true, such a use of SYG is sleazy and wrong. But - what if the "Pro Zimmerman" version is true? What if Zimmerman was just following what he thought was a suspicious person, began to head back to his car, got attacked, and shot in self defense? In that case then the SYG sounds OK - or at worst its applicability is fuzzy.

And that really is the problem, isn't it? Laws are usually passed in an attempt to fix a "problem". In some states, there was a "problem" with bad guys who would PROSECUTE people who defended themselves. That's obviously a lousy situation. You don't want criminals using the law to get rich by suing innocent citizens who just wanted to defend themselves from a crime. You also don't want innocent citizens being too scared to defend themselves from criminals for fear they are going to get thier asses sued off. People could die because of that kind of crap.

So to fix that "problem", some states have passed these SYG laws as a means of shielding innocent citizens from prosecution by sleazy criminals who got a boo-boo when the uppity citizen defended themselves. Well - as you observe - now they have a whole NEW problem... Criminals who deliberately provoke a fight and then kill the people who defend themselves! Now you're right back where you started.

This shows how hard it is to write a good law. The conundrum is that you need to write a law that sleazeballs can't mis-use to thier advantage. But it is the bad people that are the most skilled and practiced at finding ways around those protections, while the good people hardly ever think about it. The end result is that the "Bad People" are experts at the law, and the "Good People" know jack-all about the law. So you still have a population of "Bad People" who are figuring out ways to screw over the "Good People" - only now they can do it in the courts if they fail to do it in the streets. Throw in all the Shysters and stand back.

Conan unveils new Ron Paul ad (parody)

Lawdeedaw says...

Just got that message to follow this link--lol. Email box is full... no time to check it. Love the parody.

This is great.

@melanie1981 why do you say that? It has no real lies and it is not as sleazy as others. I would think the low personal attacks over the top. But his over the top? Nah. I say about time--he has been getting fucked being a quiet man, so do I blame him? People abuse the "good guy" so much that they snap back eventually.

And Paul really isn't against bridges or roads, he is against it being centralized in the hands of an inept federal government that is not policed by its people because they are incompetent... Me too...but then at the State level is no better so what is America to do? Maybe value truth over lies?

Technorati and the Scummy Paid Blogging Racket (Blog Entry by dag)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Hi Scott, I'm glad to hear that you are requiring disclosure - but in poking around and talking to a few people - I don't believe this is universal.

I take your argument, but in general I think the practice of paid blogging is sleazy and detrimental to the entire blogging ecosystem. You're basically drumming up fake enthusiasm for products or services that a blogger would not normally promote. It's bad for the products and most of all, it's terrible for the blogger, because it erodes any sense of trust that the reader may have had in them.

IMO it's a pretty shameful practice and you'd do well to divorce yourself (and Technorati) from it.

Thanks.

Hi Dag,
Scott here, one of the offending emailers, from the Technorati Media Blogger Outreach team.
My apologies if the receipt of the message offended you. What you’ve shared about bloggers as journalists is certainly true in many cases – and I’m glad we have them doing that important work.
On the flip side, there are many types of bloggers we work with who write passionately about their personal lives, experiences, hobbies, causes, opinions or interests and they welcome opportunities to review new products (like this iPad app) or develop sponsored articles–if the posts fit their editorial direction and keep the integrity of their blog. The “good” and the “bad” of a review is always up to the blogger and sponsored content is typically on a topic the blogger has an affinity for and not about a product itself.
When a blogger works on a campaign with us, we require that they disclose when they have received a product to review or payment for post in the manner of their blog our using a tool like . Most of them are doing this anyway and it’s part of our follow up to the bloggers interested in participating.
We are working on ways and finding tools to better help us connect bloggers with opportunities they find relevant. It's big challenge, but we're working on it.
A big part of my position is not marketing for clients, but to also promote blogs, bloggers and blogging. I huge fan of all the different POVs out there and connecting bloggers to opportunities they might be interested in.
All the best...

Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women

KnivesOut says...

You're missing the point. Yes, perhaps fully formed, rational, emotionally mature personalities are not susceptible to suggestive advertising. However, there's a process to becoming mature, it's called growing up, and along the way people are not so capable of differentiating the real from the not-so-real. Along the way, people's ideas of body-image get polluted by all manner of external influences. Some people have enough positive input from others close to them that they are able to defend themselves from this brain-washing. Some don't.

Clearly you have your own issues with women to deal with. My guess is that you should learn a lot if you talked to one.

Seriously, didn't we leave this kind of sexism behind in the 80s?
The point is that it ISN'T sexism. It is the refutation of a patently insulting and illogical argument that demeans human beings far more than the so-called 'evil' it decries. This woman's argument goes much further down the road of dehumanizing people than any of the ads she whines about. The only differences is that she is hiding her argument, and advertising isn't. I respect a good ad 100X more than this fool and her fear driven lies.
white males
And you're doubling down on it by being a racist. How do you even know if anyone here is white? Between her insulting mysoginy, her evil misandry, and your stereotypical racism we've got a real intolerance trifecta going on here.
Advertising is sleazy. It preys upon our fears and insecurities.
So is this woman, and her stupid arguments. Regardless, advertising does one thing and one thing only... It creates product awareness. When you march into a retail store to purchase deodorant, you don't buy Axe Body Spray because you actually believe women are going to chase you down. You buy it because you saw the ad, thought it was funny, and decided to give it a shot. And in doing so you decided that you LIKED it. I bought a can of Axe (Sharp Focus) because I saw the black can in the aisle and liked the scent - not because I thought some woman in a schoolgirl skirt was going to maul me. The argument that people are puppets of "sleazy" ads is complete bunk. Ads create awareness. Awareness leads to trial. Trial leads to consumption. It's that simple.
Those who don't get it should keep watching it in a continuous loop until your consciousness evolves to a higher level
That happened a long time ago - and without any assistance from this woman and her abbevillian stupidity. And my higher, evolved consciousness tells me that this woman - and her clearly prejudice hate of men and women - can go cram it sideways with walnuts.
68 yr-old woman it's surprising that she has not a single gray hair.
Because quite clearly this hypocrite buys into the "evil" advertising image that grey hair is bad. Oh - but I'm SURE when this dingus walks into the salon to get her hair done she doesn't feel for one second that she's a stinking, slimy, self-righteous hypocrite for dying her hair with one of those hair care products all those "evil" advertisement pimp in their demeaning, insulting, culturally poisonous advertisement. :eyeroll: What a piece of work that pathetic specimen is.

Seriously, didn't we leave this kind of sexism behind in the 80s?

I don't fully understand why my fellow white males get so uptight and defensive when it comes to the topic of sexism, racism and other types of prejudice. Is it some kind of misplaced guilt? Is it that we subconsciously know we have a good thing going on and don't want others rocking the boat? Is it that we don't understand the advantages white maleness has bestowed upon us and cannot empathize with those who do not have those advantages? Are we just over-sized monkeys? I really don't know.

I don't think there is anything even vaguely controversial about the points she is making here. Advertising is sleazy. It preys upon our fears and insecurities. It promotes greed and self loathing. It promotes mediocrity in film, news media, television and music. It provides financial support to the worst elements of both government and business. And, it targets men too. How many of you drones use overpriced "Axe" deodorant because your subconscious mind thinks it will get you laid.

This presentation is smart, pithy and right on target. Those who don't get it should keep watching it in a continuous loop until your consciousness evolves to a higher level, you fucking primates.
