Relating the Vatican to the Scienty's is unfair though. For Catholics, you have much choice in what you do and think - you obey your conscience, and can go to a different parish if the one you're in is too extreme in its interpretation of some rules (not the core doctrine, but the peripheral dogmatic things).

For the Scientys, you're a literal slave to their group. You give them all your money, they take over your life. Catholics will speak out on moral issues, while Scientys are basically power-mad. There's tons of documentation online about this so I won't get into detail, but it's like comparing a school carnival to a world war. Huge differences, such that the only similarity is that "they exist".
