Best worst metal video ever (American Movie anyone?)

poolcleaner says...

This is the BEST (doom) metal video ever produced. Fourth wall breaking and sinister! My favorite era of Candlemass.

The lyrics of the song are played out in the music video and go beyond the fourth wall into the sinister rhythm of metal music itself -- head banging and dancing in place are the effects of an entranced metalhead now "Dancing and singing to my fiddle".

Brilliant song. Brilliant video -- especially in October. *horrorshow

All hail the Messiah Marcolin!

Can't you see the devil in me
Just take a look in my eyes
I will play for you this wicked melody
It's magic will reach for your soul

It burns inside, no place to hide
This strange tune possesses your mind
It comes over you and the nightmare is true
You'll enter the realm of the dark

You are bewitched
You are bewitched

Bewitched, be delight, you'll reach the night
Dancing and singing to my fiddle
So take my hand, and understand
That no one will see you again

You are bewitched
You are bewitched

I am the master of the enchanted tune
I'll play for your joy, for your soul, for you doom
My fingers they dance upon the strings like fire
Weaving a spell of my burning desire

Sing with me, meet your destiny
Set yourself free to the magic
So come with me, my kingdom to see
Believe me you're captured my friend

You are bewitched
You are bewitched
You are bewitched
You are bewitched

Louis CK Probably won't be Invited back to SNL after this

JustSaying says...

Nope. A stereotype contains always a form of evaluation (is good at x, is a bad x, can't do x) and is therefore a prejudice. It is a commonly know, maybe even commonly accepted prejudice.
ChaosEngine plays chess. That is a prejudice. I judged that since you seem to be smart and smart people know how to play it, you must be able to play chess. You play chess.
See, I judged you and made a claim based on that judgement. The same way I could argue that because you are black (Shut up, you're black now! So say we all!) you must smell terribly like sausage because it is my experience that black people smell that way(Don't you complain about being black, I have to carry the burden of racism here). Both are not stereotypes (at least not as far as I know) but the facts that you, brother ChaosEngine, are great at basketball and posess a giant penis, are stereotypes.
I can't prove any of those right know, they are premature judgements. You may not know how to play chess and maybe you don't smell like sausages but at least both claims are not commonly made about black people. Because they're not stereotypes.
You still rule at dunking. And let's not discuss the other thing we all secretly suspect about you.

Being super pedantic, but I think what you're calling "prejudice" is actually "stereotype".

The Backwards Brain Bicycle

TheFreak says...

If you want to experience something similar at home, take a game controller and invert the Y axis in a first person game that you've played a lot. Play until you get the hang of it and then switch back. See how long it takes you to readjust.
You're engaging fewer motor functions but you should feel the bewildering and frustrating sense of everything being backwards and the experience of retuning your brain.

Final Fantasy XV trailer

jmd says...

Another ff I want to play, but you know, its kind of the first time the graphics are a "been there, done that". FF13 really raised the bar in doing excellent quality cinematic in real time, and square has gotten real good at making their worlds look good on low end hardware (ff10 pulls off a lot of tricks to make distant scenery look complex). If there was anything that stood out in this it was the trees actually looked kinda crappy.

The sad part is it will be a decade before we see this on the master PC with HBAO+.

Colbert Reacts to Star Wars New Lightsaber Controversy

Payback says...

I always thought the aperatures were made of plasma-resistant material since they're in contact with the main blade, that had some reason, too rare or some thermal issue that stopped people from making their entire saber out of it.

Besides, you would think a Sith Lord could twist his hand so that the Jedi's blade hit the plasma before it touched the aperture. Plus, the "hilt blades" come into play whenever you have that trope where the dualists lock blades and push together, allowing use as a weapon.

You can't leave with the coins either (legally). You basically have three options. Play until you bust, give the coins away to other players, or check them in with the arcade and they'll be available to you when you visit again (but they charge a "storage fee" for that).

Cameron's Conference Rap

arghness says...

Fair enough, I should have expected to be laid in to for expressing a political opinion. Fair play to you -- It is the internet, after all

I spend quite a bit of time in the north and like it there, but most of my time is in the midlands so I'm not going to pretend to know what it's like to live there permanently. The only 2 Scots (only 1 of which could vote due to living there) that I'm in touch with regularly both supported staying unified but are looking forward to the greater powers that Scotland deserve and will get.

The difference between the parties, at least in England, seems pretty minimal to me. Blair didn't seem any better (or worse really, other than ditching the gold reserves all in one go at a rather low price) than Cameron.

dannym3141 said:

What sentiment? Cameron has hammered the poor and needy of this country, sold off the post office to his chummies at half price, raised tuition fees (thanks very much Clegg) and nearly ripped Great Britain apart. Fortunately he knew the right people to oil up and got major banks and businesses to pull out in the few days prior to the vote, scaring people into saying no.

Every single scot i've spoken to (and i speak to loads, my mum lives there) has said that they would let the north come with them if they could and they only want to leave because Westminster and the south are completely disconnected from the rest of the country. It's a different world, and the people running the system have absolutely no experience what life is like for the people that have to use it.

Even John Major came out and said that there are too many (something like 80%) rich background public schoolboys in government. Can you tell me with a straight face that you've been to places like Blackpool near where i live, had to use the buses or queue for unemployment, or had family members suffering with disabilities and/or cancer, and then tell me that you think people like Call-Me-Dave in any way represent their best interests or understand their problems, struggling day to day?

I don't want to sound aggressive, but i do have experience with things like that, and some people in this country are getting to the point of desperation but of course that kinda thing doesn't get on the national news and the majority remain oblivious. If we don't see significant democratic reform in this country, i predict a significant social uprising within a lifetime.

Ray Rice Elevator Knock Out of his Fiance

Chaucer says...

All you guys that are saying he got what he deserved are hypocrites and you are obviously not watching the video.

Side note, I dont think a person should hit another person (outside of sports), whether its male/female, male/male, or female/female.

We dont know what occurred before this video but I doubt she is saying, "What do you think of this carpet, looks great doesnt it." When you look at the evidence, she slaps him outside of the elevator. Then she hits him again in the elevator. This is all before he even strikes her. Then he strikes her most likely as a reflex. He is trapped in an elevator so he cannot remove himself from the situation so he moves to the far side of the elevator (people conveniently leave this out when they talk about this). She then CHARGES him, fist leading the way. Rice has no choice but to defend himself and strikes her a 2nd time, knocking her out.

The video evidence shows the bitch deserved it. He is being prosecuted by people who want to see what they want to and not the truth. Which is terrible because its affecting his ability to have a career.

Look at it from this angle, if Rice did nothing and she damaged his eye which kept him from playing. All you assholes that say he deserves it now, would be saying "he should have defended himself" or "I would have knocked that bitch out." You cannot deny this as you people jump from one bandwagon to the next instead of relying on the truth to make a judgement.

Star Citizen: Constellation Commercial

RFlagg says...

They sold 567 of the $350 version over the weekend, which combined with other ship sales made $1.3 Million during the weekend, up for the normal $40k a day... Their total now is over $51 Million. All for a game that you can't really play yet. You can walk around your hanger, you can engage in simulated dogfights and capture the flag, and in a couple weeks a couple select ships will be able to do a race. Of course I would love to have a 300i... The game does have potential. Elite Dangerous is pretty much delivering on much of that right now, but SC can be great if it delivers on all they say they will.

Comcast customer service nightmare

eric3579 says...

From a former Comcast employee:

"If I was reviewing this guy's calls I'd agree that this is an example of going a little too hard at it, but here's the deal (and this is not saying they're doing the right thing, this is just how it works). First of all these guys have a low hourly rate. In the states I've worked in they start at about 10.50-12$/hr. The actual money that they make comes from their metrics for the month, which depends on the department they're in. In sales this is obvious: the more sales you make the better you do.

In retention, the more products you save per customer the better you do, and the more products you disconnect the worst you do (if a customer with a triple play disconnects, you get hit as losing every one of those lines of business, not just losing one customer). These guys fight tooth and nail to keep every customer because if they don't meet their numbers they don't get paid.

Comcast uses "gates" for their incentive pay, which means that if you fall below a certain threshold (which tend to be stretch goals in the first place) then instead of getting a reduced amount, you get 0$. Let's say that if you retain 85% of your customers or more (this means 85% of the lines of businesses that customers have when they talk to you, they still have after they talk to you), you get 100% of your payout—which might be 5-10$ per line of business. At 80% you might only get 75% of your payout, and at 75% you get nothing.

The CAEs (customer service reps) watch these numbers daily, and will fight tooth and nail to stay above the "I get nothing" number. This guy went too far; you're not supposed to flat out argue with them. But Comcast literally provides an incentive for this kind of behavior. It's the same reason people's bills are always fucked up: people stuffing them with things they don't need or in some cases don't even agree to."

Being Completely F**king Wrong About Iraq

newtboy says...

Indeed, however with small exception I thought we were being fairly civil. That said, we all know what to expect from the 'little f*#king thing'. It's why the admins are constantly on his ass, and he may be banned again.

My point about veracity was that one has to trust the 'reporting' by others who may have an agenda to further. Without first hand knowledge, it's difficult for some (like me) to give full trust in ANY reports. I tried to read the first link you provided, but it started with a 'letter' to Saddam and I admit I didn't go farther.
As I recall, the numbers were more in the 1-300K dead from the ethnic cleansing (I have 175K in my head, but I don't know if that's right). I was old enough to watch the reports live when it happened in the 80's-90's and worry I might be drafted. I have not intended to imply Saddam wasn't terrible, only to imply he was not as bad as possible.

What I've seen so far from ISIS were hundreds if not thousands of 'prisoners' marched to their execution after surrender, even after swearing allegiance to ISIS, reports of mass rapes, village destruction, 'warnings' to all those not in line to leave or die, takeover of 1/2 the country in weeks (or less), all by 5000 people. Reports are that they are gaining members, allies, and massive amounts of money and arms. For their size, they appear to be worse than Saddam, who had hundreds of thousands, if not millions at his disposal. If you multiplied the videoed crimes of ISIS in just the last week by 200+, you would understand my point that they seem worse than most weeks of Saddam's rule....when you consider their respective sizes.
I'll hope you are correct, and ISIS is soon to be wiped out, but it's certainly not happening yet. No matter how it plays out, you are certainly right that ugly times are ahead for Iraq.

bcglorf said:

@newtboy,

Who'd of thought our back and forth would wind up the civil portion of the thread?

On veracity, accuracy and demonstrable evidence please note I twice provided external links beyond my own day so. The last being to a thoroughly researched and documented account from Human Rights Watch. The only claimed verbatim quote I included was italicized to make clear what was quote versus a shorten in my own words summary. I included a link to the full document so anyone questioning my summary is very to call me out on specifics. Thus far the only in accuracy in aware of has been corrected. If you believe I'm in any other way mischaracterizing events as HRW documented it ask you to point it more specifically or failing that cease insisting that my account is anything less than very thoroughly backed by very well evidenced research.

By way of declaring lesser evils, I would ask you to be specific about worst ISIS has done that you feel so trumps the million dead of the Iran Iraq war and Saddam's multiple genocidal campaigns.

Lastly on ISIL, I don't think they are specifically the ones to stay up at night over anyways. Nouri Al-Maliki's credentials as a brutal thug are underestimated quite widely IMO and I very much expect the real nastiness will come from his crushing of Sunni Iraqis in the guise of stopping ISIL. Ugly times ahead, but I fear the guys your worried about are going to be taking it more than dishing it out, sadly leaving more Sunni Iraqi civilians dead than anyone else.

Why People REALLY Hate Nickleback

poolcleaner says...

You visit Videosift (theoretically) because it sifts through the bullshit videos on the internet and gives you videos of merit. How is the aversion to heavily marketed BS such a seemingly unfamiliar concept to you?

If better, more deserving music was popular, then good music would be more accessible. But when music lacking merit is popular (because someone engineered it that way) then you end up drowning in terrible music in public places where popular music is played.

Every movie I go see in the theater means I'll be listening to drivel leading up to the feature. If music was popular by merit (via a sifting process) and not marketing, there would exist good music in public places. Even if it were not the genre one is most comfortable listening to, there would be greater access to the best of all possible genres.

Instead, we have bands like Nickelback playing everywhere you goddamn go.

Payback said:

Why the fuck does anyone give a shit about what music other people enjoy?

You don't like Nickelback? Don't listen to them, buy their music, or go to their concerts.

What the fuck does your taste in music have anything to do with anything other than your own navel-gazing fucktardedness? Get over yourself. Some people don't give a crap about meaning in their music.

If you need music to learn something, your life is devoid of intelligence.

Fucking hippies.

This 70-Year-Old Bodybuilder

ChaosEngine says...

That he's body building is kinda irrelevant. It's great to see someone at 70 refusing to stop doing what they love.

I hope to still be doing everything I love until they put me in the ground.

It's trite, but the whole "you don't stop playing when you get old, you get old when you stop playing" thing has a lot of truth to it.

Shark Tank - Cycloramic

CelebrateApathy says...

Not a big fan of this show but I do like how well he played them. You could tell Cuban was going to go in big the whole time.

As the for the app itself, king of pointless as it only works with one phone and you're not likely to get any good pictures having to find a very flat surface from which to shoot. The underlying technology however seems pretty novel and I could see it being somewhat successful in other ways.

Overall, I think this guy got a great deal. Great start up money with enough equity to make some serious bank when his company is bought.

How does YouTube work and why do videos buffer?

VoodooV says...

why the hell is it a big challenge? I realize that yes, Internet connections can be flaky and you can't always control it,

but to me, this is easily solved by simply WAITING and let the buffer fill up. But in certain cases, the buffer will only fill if the video is playing.

when you hit play, throw up a screen saying please wait while we download your video so that it can play in an uninterrupted fashion.

but nah, they'll never do that because we've allowed attention deficit disorder to flourish throughout the land so we are simply unwilling to tolerate waiting a bit.

I used to do this ALL the time when apple quicktime trailers for movies first became big. Hit play, but then immediately hit pause and wait for that bar to fill all the way to the right. Sure, sometimes I got impatient and hit play sooner when I thought the buffer was going to fill before I finished watching the video, and yes, sometimes I got burned on this, but hey, it was on me, not on my ISP, or the video I was watching.

You can't even do that with youtube videos though, If i hit play, and immediately hit pause to wait for the buffer to fill, it never will, because they've got some stupid rule in there to only fill the buffer if the video is playing. Get rid of that stupid rule and allow the buffer to fill and I guarantee you the buffering symbol will go away for a lot of people.
