"I Like Turtles" Kid Speaks Again

SDGundamX says...

I like turtles too. Had one as a pet for over 15 years (Eastern Box Turtle, technically considered a tortoise) until my parents wound up losing him in the backyard while I was away at college. I also had other turtles (mostly Painter) that my dad found on the side of the freeway on his way home from work. I took care of them for a little while before setting them free in the state park near my house.

I would actually recommend against having turtles as pets unless you've got a nice big backyard that you can fence off (mostly to keep the predators out rather than the turtles in). I think it's kind of cruel that people keep them in aquariums and such. Turtles may move slowly but they do like to be able to move around a lot. You also have to be very careful about their diet, as they need a healthy variety of food. Vet bills are pretty expensive because not many vets specialize in them.

The one surprising thing about turtles is that they can actually become affectionate pets. It sounds crazy, but my turtle used to follow me around when I let him out in the backyard. He also loved being pet, not on the shell (that drives turtles crazy, it's like someone poking you directly in the spine) but under the neck. Go figure.

My dear gwiz, that'd be Beethoven: "Beethoven's Opus 131 (String Quartet), Movement 6".

Also, Hitler for the *dark.

>> ^gwiz665:
He was a pretty accomplished painter as far as I can see. But what do I know?
What is that enchanting music?

Is this really all done in Photoshop? It's been a while, but this reminds me of that program Painter, the one that came in the big paint can for packaging.

If you look REALLY close at the top left, you can see the Adobe Photoshop logo, and that the file extension for that image is .psd

Global food (price) crisis - several causes in perspective

Eklek says...

Nice poem:) I think we need more Bertolt Brecht:

FROM A GERMAN WAR PRIMER

AMONGST THE HIGHLY PLACED
It is considered low to talk about food.
The fact is: they have
Already eaten.

The lowly must leave this earth
Without having tasted
Any good meat.

For wondering where they come from and
Where they are going
The fine evenings find them
Too exhausted.

They have not yet seen
The mountains and the great sea
When their time is already up.

If the lowly do not
Think about what’s low
They will never rise.

THE BREAD OF THE HUNGRY HAS
ALL BEEN EATEN
Meat has become unknown. Useless
The pouring out of the people’s sweat.
The laurel groves have been
Lopped down.
From the chimneys of the arms factories
Rises smoke.

THE HOUSE-PAINTER SPEAKS OF
GREAT TIMES TO COME
The forests still grow.
The fields still bear
The cities still stand.
The people still breathe.

ON THE CALENDAR THE DAY IS NOT
YET SHOWN
Every month, every day
Lies open still. One of those days
Is going to be marked with a cross.

THE WORKERS CRY OUT FOR BREAD
The merchants cry out for markets.
The unemployed were hungry. The employed
Are hungry now.
The hands that lay folded are busy again.
They are making shells.

THOSE WHO TAKE THE MEAT FROM THE TABLE
Teach contentment.
Those for whom the contribution is destined
Demand sacrifice.
Those who eat their fill speak to the hungry
Of wonderful times to come.
Those who lead the country into the abyss
Call ruling too difficult
For ordinary men.

WHEN THE LEADERS SPEAK OF PEACE
The common folk know
That war is coming.
When the leaders curse war
The mobilization order is already written out.

THOSE AT THE TOP SAY: PEACE
AND WAR
Are of different substance.
But their peace and their war
Are like wind and storm.

War grows from their peace
Like son from his mother
He bears
Her frightful features.

Their war kills
Whatever their peace
Has left over.

ON THE WALL WAS CHALKED:
They want war.
The man who wrote it
Has already fallen.

THOSE AT THE TOP SAY:
This way to glory.
Those down below say:
This way to the grave.

THE WAR WHICH IS COMING
Is not the first one. There were
Other wars before it.
When the last one came to an end
There were conquerors and conquered.
Among the conquered the common people
Starved. Among the conquerors
The common people starved too.

THOSE AT THE TOP SAY COMRADESHIP
Reigns in the army.
The truth of this is seen
In the cookhouse.
In their hearts should be
The selfsame courage. But
On their plates
Are two kinds of rations.

WHEN IT COMES TO MARCHING MANY DO NOT
KNOW
That their enemy is marching at their head.
The voice which gives them their orders
Is their enemy’s voice and
The man who speaks of the enemy
Is the enemy himself.

IT IS NIGHT
The married couples
Lie in their beds. The young women
Will bear orphans.

GENERAL, YOUR TANK IS A POWERFUL VEHICLE
It smashes down forests and crushes a hundred men.
But it has one defect:
It needs a driver.

General, your bomber is powerful.
It flies faster than a storm and carries more than an elephant.
But it has one defect:
It needs a mechanic.

General, man is very useful.
He can fly and he can kill.
But he has one defect:
He can think.

The Official Roast of dotdude! (Parody Talk Post)

silvercord says...

Painting in New Orleans? Talk about putting lipstick on a pig! But isn't that just like someone from Nawlins? It figures that this bourgeois, cappuccino grunge, "I'm so relevant," artist would live in New Orleans. It's the home of fine whine. Oh, they got their noses in the air and pinkies stuck out, but that's just to keep away from the stench of the rotting corpses they bury ABOVE GROUND and to let you know that they always have their hand out for your spare change. In fact, all their plans in that city start with someone else's money.

Oh, Dotdude might be a painter, but he's really practiced in the art of how to separate you from your cash. Home tours, dot art, Bourbon Street bar hopping, transvestite window standing, drawing caricatures of tourists near the Cafe du Monde . . . what a life. Hang around here Dot . . . maybe some real class will rub off on you. Of course if you ever did get that close we'd have to go disinfect.

Alla Pugacheva - Million Crimson Roses

Farhad2000 says...

There once lived a painter
He had a house and his paintings
But he was in love with an actress
And that actress loved flowers
Then he sold his house
Sold his paintings and his blood
And with all that money he bought
A whole sea of flowers...

Millions, millions
Millions of crimson roses
From your window, from your window
From your window you can see
Who's in love, who's in love
Who's in love with you seriously
Will turn his whole life into flowers

In the morning you'll wake up at your window
Maybe, you've lost your mind
As if still in a dream
Your whole yard is filled with flowers
Suddenly your heart is turning cold
Who's the rich baron doing this
Instead under the window, barely breathing
The poor painter is standing

Millions, million
Millions of crimson roses
From your window, from your window
From your window you can see
Who's in love, who's in love
Who's in love with you seriously
Will turn his whole life into flowers

The meeting was short
By night she left on a train
But in her life she always remembered
Song of the beautiful of roses
The painter lived out his life alone
Many pains he lived through
But in his life he always had
A whole sea of beautiful roses

Millions, millions
Millions of crimson roses
From your window, from your window
From your window you can see
Who's in love, who's in love
Who's in love with you seriously
Will turn his whole life into flowers.

English translation by Andrey Kirilenko with slight modifications by me. Alla is totally huge in Russia, a nationally televised concert is nothing without her attendance or better yet performance, she is still active musically. My mum had the same haircut back then!

Terence Mckenna: Reclaim Your Mind

schmawy says...

That really bothers me a lot of the time, that we are strictly prohibited from posting our own work, if we have any. I understand the reason for it, avoiding the youtubesque submission of silly crap. There was a siftoff or something a while ago which got some good subs. It seems a bit heretical to even bring up the fact that the sift sometimes feels like American Idol. On the other hand, It's a wonderful place for ideas, culture, art, music, cinema and all that, and the discussions around them turn you on to new ideas. Should we feel bad for going to the library if we're not writers, or to galleries if we're not painters?

I think Mckenna tells you how to fill that vacuum. Make something.

From one digital painter to another, you're stuff is impressive, especially since its just an optical mouse. But you gotta realize that self-posting is VERY much against the rules here. But if you'd like to actually be a part of the community I am sure nobody will have a problem sifting your video for you.
