300: Rise of an Empire

Engels says...

For folks saying that the 300 was historically inaccurate, our historical records for that 'event' come largely from Herodotus who, although is often called the first real historian, was pretty much about cool yarns in the first place. The whole Persian conflict reads like a very cool war novel and has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Atheist in the Bible Belt outs herself because she is MORAL

I disagree, I think you garner hostility here because you do not add to the discussion, you merely spout your hyper religious nonsense ad nauseaum and flail and spin to make your arguments, while ignoring or twisting all input from others and even your own previous statements. That, and you have to write an essay or novel to answer each single line question.
At least those are my issues with you. There are plenty of other religious thinkers here that aren't being mass-ignored. That proves your 'they don't like christianity' stance is obvious BS, it's something else.
I grew up in a non-theistic household, and I'm just sick of the endless ridiculous fanatical ramblings. I haven't ignored you, I just don't read most of it. As soon as you start quoting the bible I stop reading, because I see that as a cop out that fanatics use when they can't make a rational argument, 'I know it's true because my fairy tale book tells me so" is not a rational argument, it is an indicator that the speaker is incapable of making one.

The Oceanmaker (or, my Animation adventure in Belize!)

HenningKO says...

Well, there are rewards, like any other kickstarter. What else do you expect from one of these except to see it finished, and a good feeling inside?
The sunny sandy beaches and the adventure/camaraderie of Belize are just a novel way of paying the artists for their time. We did it instead of wages... and it ended up being cheaper. Win-win-win. So like Dag, I'm promoting this mostly 'cos I want the production model to be viable!

Hmmm... 9 minutes of animation (as awesome as it may be), the honor of helping pay for another trip to Belize (?) or somewhere, and a good feeling inside for supporting the arts and "helping us create a whole new way to make animation" (making use of sunny, sandy beaches, SPF-50, and 75° water, I guess).

I've contributed to several Kickstarters, and it's possible I'm not exactly the kind of person this is aimed at, but I can't be the only one seeing this and thinking, "REALLY?".

BANNED TED Talks Graham Hancock on Consciousness Emergence

Simple as fear. It is not only a wonderful experience it is also very terrifying. Psychedelics, if that is even what it is, have been ostracized by society, for whatever reason, politics, philosophy, culture, people making OSs due to their inspiration since the 60s. DMT was known about back then, but not widely known about, back then it was super rare. Getting the main ingredients would have been a pain and required going to South America.

Now that the ingredients are not difficult to get, thanks to the digital information system, more and more people are seeing what this thing is. And many of them that take enough come back with stories right out of a Phillip K Dick novel, or information that seems so New Agey, frequencies, cymatics, fractals, entities, etc, it is too weird or difficult for people to even want to look at this as something more than a really crazy drug and look into what it is doing to the brain. This has been done to small extents in providing details into which serotonin receptors DMT is affecting. What is clear is that one would have to take HUGE amounts of mushrooms to get to what this state is, if it is even possible. This takes a person there in two seconds then ten minutes, you are back. How is it possible?

By all means, I would LOVE for this to be studied by science ; then the Singularity would be right around the corner, mann...JK.

Cop Rear-Ends Motorcycle, Blames Rider

schlub says...

I see nothing wrong with a cop telling someone off for being an asshole driver. Who gives a shit whose "fault" it is in the eyes of an insurance company. You brake suddenly for no reason, that makes you a *dick-head*. It's called reckless driving. Smarten the fuck up.

Yeah maybe the cop was too close, but the biker has mirrors. He has eyes. He has/should have common sense. He can see there's a car behind him and no one in front.

The biker's a shit driver.

What's with his description anyway, how many times did he re-work that *gem* until he felt it made him seem like he was totally innocent? "It wasn't me! It was judge Dredd!" What is that an excerpt from a novel?

The New Wilhelm Scream?

probie says...

What's the point? You're just replacing one overused scream for another.

Here's an idea: how about creating a unique scream for the scene, when and where it is warranted, instead of using some shitty stock scream recorded years ago? I guess that's too hard or too novel a concept for some.

Fuck the Wilhelm scream.

TYT - 5 Shot at "Gun Appreciation Day" Celebrations

shatterdrose says...

Oddly enough, I did write what I meant: I stopped reading. There was no need to read any further.

Quotes are quite a fun concept. You can literally transcribe what someone said, as in; Paul said, "I went to the mall." Or, you can use them as people would in actual dialogue between people. At that point they're referred to as "air quotes." For instance: "I told her I'd "help" her out." It requires an understanding of context. For instance, when I say "properly cleared" I very explicitly mean the person clearing the gun thinks they have done it properly, and would testify to said statement, but in reality they have done something wrong.

The person may honestly believe they have done everything correctly, or they may take shortcuts believing they are still in the right. Most people would refer to using quotes in this sense as being "ironic." Of course, that is technically an improper use of the word, however, it is colloquially correct.

In this case, my quotes would indicated that the gun owner believes they have properly cleared the gun, but in fact, has not. However, the gun owner would claim they "properly cleared" the gun before they shot themselves in the face. Of course, the use of quotes is also to illustrate that those of us who understand that most gun accidents similar to this stems from a lack of respect for the proper mechanics of clearing a firearm for safety.

For the sake of brevity I will say that the major cause of accidents is the owner believes they have "properly cleared" the firearm. Or, if you'd like, you can read the above 3 paragraphs. The point of the written word and the years and years of English education is so we can communicate succinctly, not write novels in a medium where anything longer than 2 paragraphs is dismissed as "too long." (In this case, the quotes are to indicate that the definition of "too long" can obviously be interpreted differently and thus giving a set value would be a gross misrepresentation.)

harlequinn said:

I'm pretty sure you read all of it - hence the cliche dismissal "I stopped reading".

My original words were "fully cleared" and you quoted with "properly cleared" which is a synonymous paraphrasing of my words (i.e. they mean the same thing). Not the best way to quote - but allowable.

If you meant something other than properly cleared, i.e. like improperly cleared, then why wouldn't you write that? If you are trying to convey some other sort of meaning with your quotation marks then you're not using quotation marks correctly and people will miss your intended meaning. So, for my sake, please just write what you mean.

Which Are Smarter: Cats or Dogs?

jonny says...

Lions definitely hunt in packs, but lions are the exception to the rule that cats are not pack animals, i.e., maintain strong, complex social relationships. Asking which of cats and dogs is smarter depends a lot on what one means by "smarter". There is no question that dogs have a higher social intelligence. Cats are probably smarter in terms of visual discrimination tasks (mostly speculation on my part based on knowledge of cat and dog visual systems).

But if by smarter one means ability to learn, I don't think there is any question that dogs come out ahead. The socially driven desire to please alpha might make them more willing to learn, but it doesn't improve their ability to do so. I'm not aware of any research in which cats are shown to be capable of learning novel complex tasks - ones involving behaviors they haven't naturally evolved and require more "thought" than simple behavioral responses.

I've seen lionesses hunting in pairs, using coordination. And as for trained dogs, I don't think we should confuse compliance and subjugation with intelligence. I feel that a cat could work as a guide animal - but it's just not into that kind of thing. Cats are loving but unhelpful assholes.

Definitely not going to be competition for the Xbox 720 - but some people are more interested in casual gaming (Angry birds) or retro gaming (MAME) and this will be perfect for that.

Also I think people are a tired of all the novel controls - Kinnect, numchucks, wands, boards, guitars. Some people just want to play games with their thumbs.

Deano said:

It's interesting that the controller is not really "disruptive". No love for us lefties as usual.

Using the tablets/phones out there as controllers makes a lot of sense.

But really that controller needs a bit of work.

These Android consoles will do well based on their cost. Sony and Microsoft have only sold about 70m units each I believe. There's scope to sell to far more people in a different part of the market.

That said I'm playing Far Cry 3 at the moment and a magnificent experience like that might not be seen too often on these new platforms.
