More Cold steel chopping. This time with a combat SHOVEL!

the blade is very thin and i bet that was very soft wood. When splitting firewood i have sunk mine pretty deep in to the stump. not quite this deep, but i could see that happening.>> ^HugeJerk:
How the hell did that first throw penetrate the wood that deep?

You split firewood with a shovel? You know they actually invented a tool for that job... Like 25,000 years ago.

i have a hatchet and a wood maul too. But, those are heavy and only do the one job, which is not ideal for camping. The shovel is light, has a holder and does many jobs. It's also thinner and sharper than a hatchet so it's much better for splitting a large piece down to kindling (not as good as a machete, but better than a hatchet). I will say, on the negative side, it does have a tendency to bind up in a log if it is too long where a hatchet would split the log.

after seeing the posts recently about the cold steel guys chopping up stuff with swords, i felt obliged to add this. I actual have one of these shovels and i love it! I use it for camping where it comes in handy as a shovel (duh) a hatchet, machete, fire tool, hammer and a few other odds and ends. It's a very well designed thing.

Having said all that, the guys at cold steel are still a bit ridiculous with their demos. I guess it's good to know they take their stuff VERY serious.

Coming from "sumone" too "ignorent" to even know how to spell "genoside" I'll take that pithy remark as the highest compliment.

People have probably noticed I have little patience for the pathetic ignorance that leads people to cry how genocide is happening today, and point at the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as examples.
You are absolutely right that genocide has continued to happen since the holocaust, and few have cared. You're even right to ascribe guilt to America for some of them. But you need to be pointing at Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge. You need to be pointing at the era where America backed, or failed to remove Saddam as he perpetuated multiple genocides of his own.
But more importantly still, if you actually care about genocide being perpetuated then spend some more time talking about the worst ones that are still happening today. Rwanda just recently managed to kill more people more quickly than the nazi death camps, and they did it without setting up camps or factories, they just picked up enough machetes to get the 'job' done. The crew that did it never was caught or stopped either, they were chased out of Rwanda into the Congo, were they are still raping and killing the days away.
Somalia's president is a convicted war criminal by the ICC, and the whole of the Africa Union is willing to protect him, because there are that many leaders of African nations that are all worried that if the Darfur genocide could get him in trouble, they might be too.
The list of genocides going on today, right now, are endless. If the best example you can come up with is the American import of inexpensive chinese labor, I suspect your priorities are NOT on ending genocide and lie in much different place. Don't sully the fight against genocide with your own prejudices.

Don't thik I saw it.....my sift habits are minimal nowadays...I come to the unsifted, see the subject matter includes mostly political bullshit and people hurting themselves, and I change the channel.

Very little art, very little music, very little mind-expanding ideas, concepts, etc. Oh....did I mention the inane banter and the cliques of pricks, dicks, geeks, and no chicks?

Oh and formulaic, soul-less guitar-playing by gwiz and laud and praise from people who wouldn't know good music if it fell on them from the sky?

Apologies for not being able to return the message private.....These powers are not mine any longer, by mandate of the dag.....wouldn't want top hurt anyone's precious feeeeeelings.

You wouldn't expect a dog fight to be this funny

botono9 says...

>> ^westy:

Regardless of u stance on animal crulty its ironic that the people r trying to get the dogs to fight and the dogs just want to sniff eachothers bums and hump.
if annything it gose in the face of dog fighting.
allso this video in no way indorses dog fighting.

It's not ironic that the dogs have to be taught to fight each other, that's just the way it works. These animals would not otherwise attack each other so viciously, as the likelihood of getting themselves injured or killed is too high. That's why animals develop various non-violent methods of resolving disputes (baring teeth, growling, raising hackles, etc.).

The main reason that this video is not amusing in the least is that the flip side of this coin is gruesome, inhumane and abhorrent. If these animals cannot be taught to fight viciously until one of them is dead or they are physically separated by their handlers, they will be killed. A fighting dog that doesn't fight isn't worth shit to a person who fights dogs. So while someone felt it would be fun to put clever musical touches on this particular video, I would challenge them to do the same to the video of these dogs being drowned, electrocuted, strangled, shot, hacked with a machete or all of the above.

This video absolutely endorses dog fighting, as it tries frame this phase of a fighting dog's life as amusing or cute, when in fact it is anything but. If these dogs do not "overcome" their natural urges to inspect each other and integrate in a peaceful social hierarchy, they will be killed by their handlers in cold blood.

The humor that is being attempted by the video's creator is not lost on me, but I cannot ignore the greater context of dog fighting simply because of some silly music.

I am a regular lurker here on VideoSift, and this is the first time I cursed the fact that I am not a bronze star user, as this is the first video I felt like down-voting.

Don't give in to those established bastards. Seriously, I upvoted your comment here. Whenever, I say anything the least bit reactionary to some established piece of bullshit, I get the same treatment. Solidarity.

This is a dirty, cheap argument and people like you who make such arguments, are what holds back progress in this world.

I could make the claim that eating dogs shouldn't be illegal because, well, what's stopping someone who really likes chickens from putting forth a motion to ban eating chicken based on the same arguments against eating dogs. It's not the same fucking thing. That's what.

Let's keep going. Why the fuck is it illegal to walk away from my dogs shit without picking it up, but he can piss wherever he please! Wtf is this bullshit? Both are excremental. It's time people start carrying around a bucket of soapy water and a sponge because, god willing, I WON'T STAND FOR THIS INCONSISTENCY.

Okay just one more in case you actually are dumb, and aren't just a self-serving sophist pig. It's illegal to carry a concealed machete in the streets. Well wait, hold on! Why's it illegal to conceal a machete up your sleeve while strolling in the streets but I can carry a mag lite? Both are tools.

HEY GOVERNMENT! YOU BETTER BE CONSISTENT HERE, IF YOU'RE GOING TO BAN A TOOL, YOU'D BETTER BAN ALL TOOLS.

In fact mods, let's start by banning this tool.

I feel the same way about nose piercings, but I see no reason to force everyone to live to -my- standards.
To be consistent, if you support institutions forcing people to remove certain clothing, you also must support outlawing color combinations worn by gangs, and outlawing the wearing of sagging pants that is so popular among the wannabee gangstas today. Are you ready to allow colleges to outlaw wearing red & black outfits?

Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry on The 10 Commandments

SDGundamX says...

I know given the number of atheists here on the Sift maybe writing this is a moot point--and I will preface all of this by saying I am NOT a Christian--but I think people here who are hating on the 10 commandments need to put things into a little perspective.

The 10 commandments were written at a time when the Jewish people were on the verge of extinction. They had just fled slavery in Egypt and were moving through difficult and wild countryside on their search for a new (or old depending how you look at it) homeland. If they were to survive at all, everyone would have to work together.

Maybe some people here think not stealing or killing should be self-evident but just look at what is happening in Haiti right now--the hospitals are getting flooded with as many gunshot and machete wounds as they are quake injuries as people fight for survival. The Jewish people were in a far worse situation than the Haitians--they didn't have anybody coming to bail them out. They had only each other to rely on. I think Moses and the other Jewish leaders realized that a totalitarian regime was the ONLY way for them to survive that journey. You had to punish stealing with death because the survival of the group depended on people trusting each other and working together. If someone wasn't willing to work for the survival of the group, they were a threat to the group's survival. If Moses and the others didn't want things to devolve into chaos, they probably figured they needed to keep a firm grip.

I think if you regard the 10 commandments in this light, they make a lot of sense. If the Jews lost their collective sense of identity and some people in the group started worshiping other gods, then that would be a threat to the group's security. It might cause internal friction or an outright split. Furthermore, the only thing people are more afraid of losing than their lives is their souls. If the 10 commandments are God's word, then maybe you think twice about stealing something. Notice that we have lots of laws against stealing in civilized countries and yet we also have jails full of thieves. Apparently the word of man is not enough to deter people, but for the Jews at this time, the word God may have been enough.

Now, obviously the world has changed a lot since Moses' time. But I don't think that totally negates a need for the ten commandments. As I mentioned above, despite having laws, despite whatever "innate" sense of morals we might have (I have large doubts about the idea that any morals are innate, but for the sake of this post let's just say it is true), there are still people out there willing to kill, rob, or screw their neighbor's wife if given the opportunity. But would they be willing to do those things if they believed in a deity that would punish them for these things even if they were not caught while alive in this world? I don't have the answer. For some, such as the criminally insane, it obviously wouldn't make any difference. But for others...? If it does keep them from doing something that we all agree is immoral (I'm leaving aside the worshiping idol stuff at the moment) is that really such a terrible thing? If it reinforces our own "innate" sense of morals, is that so bad? Regardless of what religious view you take, can you really argue that rules against killing or stealing are a bad thing?

My 2 cents. Thanks for reading.

yes. really.
it was fucking bizarre.
and it preyed on a disenfranchised subculture. really i never go the whole punk rock evangelical christian thing. at all. not that youre not entitled to your own personal belief set and spirituality. its the bizare group think evangelical part that doesn seem to mix well. but whatever. i thought it was funny that the sermon was all about zombies basically.

i dont know, i was raised mormon and never saw anything nearly as bizarre there as i have seen in these hip rock band power point churches. like catholics, mormon services are very reverent and ceremonial and traditional. they also dont have like one guy that talks all the time. the congregation all take turns giving talks and running the service. and theres no paid clergy. say what you want about the mormons, their beliefs are full of shit and the dogma has hurt alot of people close to me. but the services are tasteful and frugal at least. and they dont get into the wierd shit until youre a high preist and going to temple. and until the recent funding of anti gay marriage propaganda i had pretty much no problems with how they spent and dealt with tithing.

i also totally thought going to mass with my catholic stepmom was a hoot.

I had a girlfriend who was an evangelical and wanted me to convert, I went to church with her thinking it couldn't be too different from my somewhat traditional catholic upbringing. When services started we watched clips from The Passion of the Christ and then discussed how to get tickets for 5-10 minutes. Then the pastor rode in on a harley and we watched clips from Orange County Choppers. The episode was about the motorcycle guys teaching kids about how to work on motorcycles and the sermon was all about why it is so important to start your kids off learning about jesus early on. Then the full band roared into action (two drum sets, three guitars, several singers and a few horns) followed briefly by collection (I'm assuming to pay for the big screen tvs and projectors in the room, not to mention the band and the Harley) and then a Passion ticket raffle.

We left and my g/f at the time described how great it was that the church could get a message out that people today could relate to. I was going through my head thinking about how much everything must have cost for that one session (poverty, chastity and faith right??) and getting reamed out by her for not waving my arms back and forth in 'praise' when they were singing.

So, not that I dont believe you or anything but, damn, the things some people do.

fyi that whole incident above happened when i was struggling with disbelief I was feeling which only made things weirder.

my exhusband was/is severely mentally ill. when all else failed, one of his doctors recommended going to church. at that point we would have done anything . she recommended a church that catered to punk rockish young adults, which i suppose we were. so..... we went. they were all very nice of course, the church was called "deliverance" and we had to make jokes about how fucking creepy that is. it was in a dead, run down shopping center from the early 80s. it looked like a tattoo studio from the outside, with tattoo'd up skateboarding young punks seemingly loitering outside. at 21 and 29 we were probably the oldest people there.

sooo.... the pastor comes out. the sermon that day is about raising the dead. and how if jesus could do it and he was a man, then we could do it too!!! everyones homework was to heal the sick and raise the dead. FOCUS ALL YOUR ENERGY ON RAISING THE DEAD!!!!!!! then he played a 45 minute long guitar solo which made all the kids raise their arms or rock back and forth on the floor. also everyone HAD to give all their money, if they didnt raise $10,000 that week the church would be shut down, so give all your money then go home and get money from your parents.

soooooo we were of course highly fucking offended by everything that went on there. and besides that, a medical doctor prescribed a church sermon about raising the dead to mental patient with psychotic features. WTF?!?! i wont even get into all the hundreds of ways that could have gone terribly wrong.
luckily my husband hated religion even more than i do and knew damn well that was 100% bullshit and not license to go on a fucking zombie hunt with his machete or something.
