John Oliver Trashes Whole Foods

AeroMechanical says...

Grocery shopping has become too complicated lately it seems to me. Used to be not all that long ago that you just got what looked good at the big chain grocery store and then made the odd trip to specialist shops for particular things on occasion. Whole Foods does have some good stuff, but it's way too expensive to just buy everything there. Trader Joe's has decent quality and prices but very limited selection. The local hippy organic grocery store/coop is in a similar situation to Whole Foods but with different stuff, and then there is the still the big chain grocery store with good prices on things that don't really vary much in quality. Oh, and of course there are still the delis and butcher shops and whatever else for the particular things they do well. Also, they went and knocked down the Pick 'n' Save that was three blocks away and are building a Metro Mart, which in my experience is exactly the same thing but with fancier decor and higher prices.

I have like five different grocery lists now. So, the end result is that I actually have access to much higher quality food at not unreasonable prices and yet somehow I'm ending up eating frozen pizza a lot more than I used to when it was Pick and Save or nothing.

Swat Team Completely Destroys Home Chasing Shoplifter

Mordhaus says...

Wow.

This is why our police does not need to have access to military gear. You had one suspect with a weapon, you talk him out or you rush multiple parts of the home. What you don't do is blow out every wall in every room, tear down the fences all around, and make it look like a warzone.

Now, as a dog owner, I would be pissed because if they knocked down my fence, both of my beloved pets would run out and be hurt or killed. What if there were kids playing in those other yards? The sheer lack of consideration for the damage they were doing is atrocious.

The worst part of this is none of that money that is going to be paid on lawsuits over this is going to come out of those jackbooted thug's pockets. It's going to come out of the people of that community's taxes. That is horseshit. I would force them to sell their toys and demilitarize, then take that money to pay people.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR OUR POLICE TO BE ARMED WITH MILITARY GEAR!!! If you are going to police us with the same gear the military has, then you are basically the military and should be subject to Posse Comitatus and the Insurrection Act of 1807.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Paid Family Leave

bobknight33 says...

WE as is "That's not the country we have decided we want to live in" Who is WE??

I don't agree with the WE. So there is no WE.

Anyway:

After reading you response it appears that you premise is this:

People are too inferior to make reasonable and logical decisions to succeeded in life so we need a benevolent government to provide for its people.

----------------Such a defeatist position.-------------------------

I believe that it is a basic instinct to want to succeed. That one naturally raises to the occasion and overcomes adversity. I believe in ones ability to rise to the occasion. To get knocked down and get back up. I believe in the human spirit.

AS for "How about we just remove all corporate welfare" Yep I agree and also get rid of mortgage deductions and all other government cheese.

In a perfect world, perhaps. This world is not perfect, and many people don't have the ability to 'plan', either financially or sexually. Your plan leaves anyone who does not plan perfectly for an unknown future on the streets and destitute. That's not the country we have decided we want to live in. If you do, there's always Somalia.
Your plan leaves us with millions of destitute elderly on the streets. Bad plan, that would NEVER work. Again, you expect people to plan for their future perfectly, and if they don't, fuck em. That's terrible, uncaring, non-thinking planning. They don't just disappear if they planned badly and are homeless, foodless, and hopeless, they show up on your driveway with a knife.
How about we just remove all corporate welfare, cut our military by 5%, and actually extend benefits for PEOPLE? The reduced costs in your plan would not even be noticed in the federal budget, not a single percent change, mine would be noticed. I think you believe that 'welfare' (social programs) is a major cost to the fed, it's simply NOT. On the other hand, it does save us billions by not having to deal with sick desperate homeless people by the millions. It's proven time and time again that taking care of them humanely costs far less than ignoring them until you can no longer ignore them.

The Wrong Way To Demolish A Wall

Yes, see the second link I put in later.

This might be a corner of it here in streetview - https://goo.gl/maps/6oNs3

Also, keep following that road in streetview.

The satellite maps are probably too old to show it though... it looks like the roofing of the old buildings that they knocked down to build the crumpled paper bag building.

I was trying to use the satellite map to find that building. Couldn't figure it out. Any ideas?

Ellen Dance Dare Gone Wrong- With Cops

ulysses1904 says...

I'm with the cops on this one. Anyone that follows pop culture trends like this douche prancing in the streets deserves to be knocked down. The evil drama queen music really helped to sell the video.

Strike! Or not...

nock says...

Good question. Here are the rules:
"
6a. Legal Pinfall
Pins to be credited to a player following a legal delivery shall include:

Pins knocked down or off the lane surface by the ball or another pin.
Pins knocked down or off the lane surface by a pin rebounding from a side partition or rear cushion.
Pins knocked down or off the lane surface by a pin rebounding from the sweep bar when it is at rest on the pin deck before sweeping dead wood from the pin deck.
Pins that lean and touch the kickback or side partition. All such pins are termed dead wood and must be removed before the next delivery.
No pins may be conceded, and only pins actually knocked down or moved entirely off the playing area of the lane surface as a result of a legal delivery may be counted."

So....I am not sure if it is considered down since it was moved off the lane surface and then ended back on the lane surface.

Jon Stewart Goes After Fox in Ferguson Monologue

I don't think she/he's trolling - i think she/he's an idiot. It reminds me of that picture i see around - "hurrr durrr i'm a idiot!" "go away idiot" "joke's on them, it was all a ruse!" ... In other words, if it looks and sounds like an idiot then it's an idiot, even if it's intentionally being one.

The only possible explanation is that she/he is some kind of innovative anti-troll that states the best possible argument for the worst possible opinion - worst as rated on a scale of how damaging and unfair it is to society; religion, the environment, equality - all videos that she/he has been spouting the most abominable shite about within the last week alone! She/He sets up the perfect bad argument for someone to come along and blow it up point by point, all of which she/he pointedly ignores. Everyone who reads past comes to understand the argument, see that one side makes sense and is rational, and comes to the correct conclusion.

In which case i hope you'll all join me in a great big thanks for her/his contributions to highlighting the plight of the boot-trodden minorities. You never fail to set up the perfect knock down for anyone who has any kind of reasoned understanding of anything you post about. Back in the 00s here in England we all thought Dom Joly and Sascha Baron Cohen were crazy fools, but they were 10 years ahead of their time. And now Zach Galifianakis is standing on the shoulders of giants. Great work, @lantern53.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Climate Change Debate

Asmo says...

Which is the classic last stand of the denier, conspiracy theorist or indeed religious person, and one that is essentially unassailable.

"I believe what I believe and nothing you say or demonstrate can change it..."

You don't actually provide any counter evidence, you just put down the evidence as completely unreliable because of it's source. It's a very effective way to convince yourself that the debate is being balanced if you can knock down some of those 97% who overwhelmingly disagree with you...

The problem is that while only 3% of scientists refuse to be convinced, a very large portion of very powerful people and politicians agree with them, and have a disproportionate amount of power to stymie change. Perhaps they don't even ideologically agree, they may just not care if it effects their profits...

Either way, the debate goes round and nothing gets done. Stalling is as successful as denying...

Whether you believe or not, the most effective way to get something done is to put our environment before our profit margins anyway.

noam chomsky-confronted by right wing zombie

poolcleaner says...

Ahhhh, he must be a drone of the Cult of the Grand HR Machine in action. Simultaneously knocking down radical ideas and then capitalizing upon the innovations of the radical.

Intellectuals are specific cogs for creating ideas. But! their ideas should be designated for their specific quadrant of weapons/systems engineering and never seep into political culture.

WARNING, Noam Chomsky, your views violate the nature of the GHRM.

The GHRM has determined you no longer qualify as a person. Your designation is now: food. Be happy and exercise the remainder of your free will:

Would you like to be converted into solid food or liquefied supplements?

DN | Jeremy Scahill rips on David Gregory for being a stooge

Yogi says...

I know you're kidding but I have someone on that. Greenwald made the point that everyone has a bias, so it doesn't matter. What matters is what you can prove, how good your journalism skills are. If you present a good argument and support it with enough research that it can't be knocked down, it doesn't matter what personal view you had of the situation. You came at it from all sides if you did your work, because you have to to challenge yourself and your thesis.

So David Gregory and other mainstream journalists are just lazy. Why? Because they're always looking for concision, their medium demands it.

But that would undercut their "objectivity."

TeaParty Congressman Blames Park Ranger for Shutdown

TEDX Rupert Sheldrake The Science Delusion

TheSluiceGate says...

Remember, Rupert Sheldrake *actually believes* in psychic powers.

In this video he sets up a bunch of straw-men arguments to knock down. Just by using (and abusing) the language of science and framing it inwords like "dogma" that we associate with religion doesn't mean that anything else you have to propose has any validity.

He believes that by "morphic resonance" that "natural systems, such as termite colonies, or pigeons, or orchid plants, or insulin molecules, inherit a collective memory from all previous things of their kind".

Hmmm. I'm waiting or your peer reviewed paper on this with interest.

Skater punched by kid's mom

newtboy jokingly says...

I would hope a poster could take a figurative punch to the face after claiming knocking down a child is 'almost killing them' on a fucking board where thinking people congregate. I thought posters were supposed to be tough, apparently not on the internet.
