Zero Punctuation: Portal 2

Jinx says...

Portal was the indy game I knew was going to be huge before anybody else did

Portal 2 was the blockbuster sequel that I knew was going to be underwhelming before anybody else did.

Boy was I surprised. Totally amazing, loved every minute. It never took me long to find those tiny patches of white 100 metres above me, so all that focus testing totally worked. Made me feel all kinds of smart too. The original had more charm, but the sequel is a better game.

Oh, and I love Yahtzee all the more for his comment on TF2 hats. I remember when Valve went on and on about restricted colour palettes, instantly recognisable silhouettes and setting...then they went on to add a bunch of hats that shat all over that philosophy and my framerate.

Hawken Trailer (Work In Progress) - Amazing Indie Game

Nah, you can quite easily make open space with Unreal, doesn't bloody occlude though, but hey!looks pretty Be interesting to see what they do with this >> ^kceaton1:

I hope this is a HEAVILY modified Unreal tech, because unfortunately their engine is a large hallway or open room with really pretty sky boxes.
Which again, I'd rather have Crysis (Crytek engine)...

Couldn't agree more - it is more action orientated, however I miss Mechwarrior

>> ^AeroMechanical:

With all the circle strafing and jumping around, it looks more like an fps with robots more than a Mechwarrior kind of game. Mechwarrior was closer to a simulator than a shoot-em-up action game.
Comparisons aside, it does look very, very cool though.

No need to buy it anymore. That stuff is free, until you actually make money. Enormous opportunities for indie devs, these days.
>> ^EMPIRE:

oh I had no idead they were using unreal engine, but now that you mention it, it kinda looks like the Unreal engine.
But yeah, buying an already existing engine cuts a lost of development time.

I recall, maybe a year or two ago, seeing a *really* cool looking in-game trailer for a new official Mechwarrior game, then I heard some random rumor snipits abouts legal troubles with FASA, and then that was it. Nothing else.

Anyone know anything about that? Because, without a doubt, along with space sims like Tie Fighter, Mechwarrior-style games are something you just don't see anymore but that could be insanely, unbelievably, ridiculously awesome with modern hardware.

Well it's being made with UDK (Unreal Engine 3), so they wouldn't have needed to spend time writing their own engine. Gameplay wise, you're basically looking at Unreal Tournament on a different visual scale. So yeah, a small, hard-working team could very easily make this quickly.

The artstyle is fantastic!>> ^EMPIRE:

I wonder what's the size of the team that is making the game. They're supposed to be an indie developer, and from what I read somewhere this was done in less than a year.

So, I've made an iPhone game (Blog Entry by gwiz665)

@kceaton1 I think we've looked at the indie games thing for another project, allegedly it's quite a hassle, but I may remember it wrong.

At this point we don't have alternative playing methods, but that's something I'd like to add.. I doubt I'll have time to add it to this edition of it though, since I'm on to other projects now.

I didn't look too long, but do you have alternate playing methods?

You might want to look at Microsoft's Indie games for the 360. I don't know if the development side is completely free, but if it isn't much and the compatibility/code transfer isn't too hexing, it might be worth a try. (I think that has payment as well for the developers)

I agree it is fantastic marketing. I am guessing the guy sells a ton of IDs each day. Let's say 10 a day (which may be conservative with the hype), that is more than $130 a day. If he nails 100 IDs a day...
EDIT: If this story is to be believed, he made $350,000 in one day once. With over 257,000 IDs sold....

Minecraft Is Just Awesome

RFlagg says...

Why did I stop learning Java again?
I got to agree with everyone. The game is fun. The initial few videos I saw I was with yellowc's friends saying "That looks like shit." After a while I gave it a go. Now I have joined the cult, paid my dues and find myself spending my time exploring some world.
The next big update comes Halloween... Torches going out will not be fun...
