Inside of an F4 tornado

vil says...

Historically first ever EF4 tornado in our country. The shock was such that basically everyone has new houses crowdfunded. 6 dead, not the people in the video.

Shelving System to Hide your Valuables, Guns & More Guns

No one said anything about teaching a child how to use a gun. You have lots of things in your house that are deadly to kids (knives, chemicals, etc.), and I hope you would teach them that those things are dangerous and not to be played with rather than hiding them and hoping they wont find them. Why would a gun be any different?

I'm not sure who's disagreeing with who here.

The fact that you can teach a child in order to make their access to guns safer doesn't mean that every child that has access to guns will be taught this in a sufficient way. Besides, how many children had lots of training and still ended up shooting themselves or someone else.

If you don't think having a gun in your home would automatically make it the most dangerous thing in that home then you're either being disingenuous or you have some freaky shit going on in your house.

So my question is: despite the fact that some kids can be taught to be careful with a firearm, what is the justification of owning one, that doesn't require paranoid delusions such as:

1. The country being invaded by a foreign military that's sophisticated enough to get on land in large numbers without enough forewarning to enable a military defense; or are able to overcome a military defense (for the US that would be the world's largest military defense by an order of magnitude) - yet inept enough to be overwhelmed by a rag tag, uncoordinated army of citizens.

2. The country suddenly turning into a military dictatorship without warning (for the US that would be the world's largest military dictatorship by an order of magnitude so you'd really be kind of screwed anyway).

3. Everybody needing to suddenly hunt for rabbits with UZIs.

4. Maybe something to do with zombies.

I'll play devil's advocate and say 5: to defend your property and family against an armed burgler. Yet if you take a look at the rest of the world, at countries where guns are not prolific, gun assisted burglaries are so rare that it doesn't even bear thinking about.

The fact that you need a gun to defend yourself against someone with a gun is because you both have guns. - Captain "Circular" Obvious

I can't really budge on this unless you can somehow convince me that it's not preferable to live in a western society where almost all people have never even seen a real gun, therefore removing all their associated problems.

That's not an idealism, that's pretty much most of Europe.

>> ^colt45:

I'm amused at two assertions: guns are designed to kill people, and that kids think guns are fun to play with.
Children who are not taught properly about firearms are, generally, viewing them as toys to play with. Children who are properly taught about firearm safety, use, etc., are much more likely to view them properly; as very dangerous tools.

I have personally witnessed one murder and one attempted murder, both committed with handguns. I have yet to witness a "defensive" use of a handgun.
There are just too many morons out there, for the number of guns circulating around.

Oh, so since you haven't personally witnessed a gun being used in self defense, it must not happen at all. I personally haven't witnessed a police officer stopping a crime, so why do we need them?

>> ^arekin:

You know taking the deathcows arguments into account (though I don't agree with them), Guns are meant to be fired. The guy only has two arms. I've heard the argument "what about his friends?" If they wanted to fire a gun they probably already have one. So either the guy has to grow more arms or hes just carrying around alot of extra weight.
Buy more clips and less guns.

I like to play video games, but by your logic, one game is enough. Also, stamp collectors, they only have two eyes, so why do they need so many stamps?

>> ^L0cky:
And you want to live in a country where every child is taught how to use a firearm?
I'd prefer a society where my kids play too much video games, so I tell them enough already go outside and play!
I'd rather that than feel like I live in a society where I have to teach a seven year old how to kill people (sorry, defend oneself with a deadly weapon).
You know, like Liberia or Mozambique.

Little boy walks into a whore house dragging a dead flat frog on a leash behind him. He walks up to the Mistress who's eying him curiously, "Uhm.. yes little boy? Can I help you?". The boy looks up and replies, "I want a lady right now, and she better have active herpes.".

"WHAT? I think you better just leave..", to this the boy slams a large set of bills down on the counter in front of him. The lady shrugs noticing the considerable amount of money before her, "Alright, one dirty whore coming up.". With that she sends the boy upstairs.

Later the boy comes walking down the stairs looking rather relieved and begins heading for the door. The lady pipes up, "Kid.. come over here. Now, I can understand wanting to come into this establishment looking for your first time, but.. why on god's earth where you looking to catch disease?".

"Well", the boy replied, "now that I've caught herpes I'm gonna go home back to the baby sitter and she'll catch herpes.". The lady blinks, "W-what?". The boy's eyes narrow looking somewhat perturbed at having to explain further, "Later, my parents will come back and my dad will drive the baby sitter home, and then he'll have herpes.". Once again the lady is shocked at what she's hearing. "By morning my mom will have herpes.", the boy continued. "B-but why? Why would you?", the boy shook his head, "After dad goes to work the mailman will come and that's the son of a bitch who ran over my frog!".

Happy 10th anniversay you failed Sega Dreamcast

JiggaJonson says...

My parents sold my Dreamcast while i was away at college.

My game library included:

Marvel vs Capcom << toss up for personal favorite House of the Dead 2
Powerstone << toss up for personal favorite and NFK 2K Blitz

A few others that I dont remember fondly but the system on the whole was great. But they are right on about the SEGA burning their customers. 32X was shit, SEGA CD was shit, and Saturn, looked promising but then it along with the games for it disappeared. I won my Dreamcast at a carnival (i know right?) but it had been out for about 6 months at that point and I was again burned when they announced they would no longer be developing for the system.

damn you SEGA---DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!

Personal Video of the Rifleman at Presidential Rally

Ahh, I can't be bothered doing my answers inline this time

I meant not so much the police protecting you from physical harm, it's not something that crosses my mind much really. It's more them finding and prosecuting people who break the law by stealing or breaking property etc. I've never felt the need to have a deadly weapon in my house... I just don't feel threatened as that guy obviously seems to feel.

You're coming from the mindset of fear, fear that the worst is bound to happen. I'm coming from the mindset of no fear, and as such live a happier, less stressful and worried life. And if it came to being broken into by an armed assailant, the chances of you getting to your gun and loading it (you don't keep it loaded do you, with any children around?) before they're on you is unlikely. So all you're really doing is housing a very deadly weapon in your house and creating more danger.

And taking issue on the fuel tax but ignoring the public transport system or social security dodges the cases where user pays does not, and can not work.

And I have no issue with a government being large. If it's a large government doing works that are generally considered to be of good worth and employs a large number of people to do so... then good. That's giving people work, they pay their taxes, consume, spend their money, keep the economy going and have created things that are of worth to the community as a whole.

Different governments get different things right and wrong, they can't always be right. But I'd rather not leave it all up to private companies who's sole aim is to make money, that's not the way forward for a country to have solid building blocks to have happy, healthy, housed and educated people.

>> ^blankfist:
spoco2,
There was a time before gasoline tax and someone came up with the bright idea to tax the gasoline to pay for infrastructure, so surely someone would do the same when bio vehicles become the norm. I think that's a moot point.

"It's entirely different levels from having a police force who you can call on to uphold the laws of the land when need be vs. always carrying a loaded, deadly weapon with you."
Obviously the only reason you'd carry a firearm is for self protection, correct? So when you say "call on [police] to uphold the laws" I imagine you mean "call on [police] to protect" as a replacement for carrying a firearm, correct? So, if I'm ever in a position where I need to protect myself and my fists are inadequate, I will need to find a phone and call the police and hope they arrive before something awful happens to me or my family.
That doesn't sound like a very good system.
Your idea of the police protecting us is illogical, because unless they're everywhere at all times, then you have no real protection. The only persons who will be where a crime goes down every single time is the aggressor and the victim. The victim requires a way to protect themselves, therefore carrying a weapon is the only real option.

"The idea is that you lobby and protest and vote in people that spend the money in a way that you think will better the country, not just remove all money going to the government."
I never said remove all money going to government. I'm a minarchist so I believe in a government albeit limited and small. I agree with paying some money to infrastructure and police, but the way in which we pay should be voluntary, hence the gas tax example I already mentioned which is only one example of many. A government can raise a lot of money through voluntary taxes, and income tax only makes up something like a third of the government's revenue, anyway. You mean to tell me we can't cut the government budget by a third? Come on.

i think something a lot of people over look with natal is that it could most likely do the exact same thing. and im more then excited for this kind of tech to be developed. i hope games like Time Crisis or House of the dead could flourish again. oooo so excited, dont care which gets it right, as long as one does it properly and not as a cheap gimmick cause the competitor is doing it.
