A vague and flawed premise, but what the hell!

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - In America, you're not forced to display flags or any other patriotic paraphernalia, nor are you required to attend "pro-government" rallies where your absence results in punishment. A greater concern would be the large numbers who are openly anti-patriotic, with little cause.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Liberals want foreign invaders (as well as illegal aliens) to automatically be protected by American law. Abu Ghraib was an anomaly, not the norm.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - Islamonazis are not a fictional creation. As for the rest of the tags, yeah, if you oppose the principles of the Founding Fathers, which do NOT include "free" health care, education, etc., then you're something else besides loyal to the Constitution. You're not a bad egg but you're not a capitalist, either.

4. Supremacy of the Military - The Constitution provides for the common defense but not for Health-Education-Welfare, but we waste an equal amount or more on the latter.

5. Rampant Sexism - We've got a woman prez candidate who's a bigger fascist than all the men combined. Socialism is just fascism with a smile.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Not with the internet.

7. Obsession with National Security - "Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses." Common to all governments at all times. Excessive fear is bad, but not healthy fear. If anything, half the nation is clueless that there is a very real War on Terror being fought every day.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - USA is not a theocracy, but was generally founded on Judeo-Christian principles. "Love thy neighbor" is not unique to any one religion. It's the "freedom FROM religion" crowd that has the problem with perceived theocratic rule.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - All power that has power is protected, to some degree. The Department of Education should be scrapped yet it's still around. Power is power.

This is in Surfers Paradise, very close to where I live in Queensland. I've seen it action, and I've seen the spew bucket off to the side - most people don't make it though, so there's a permanent vomit slick around the ride.

In the background, at the end - you can see the Surfers Paradise meter maids. They are employed by the chamber of commerce to walk around parking lots in their bikinis and put coins in expired meters - as a goodwill gesture.

It's possible to be a patriot and believe the war is illegal. Look at Pat Tillman. IMHO the main reason dissident voices on the left may sound Anti-American tone is that bigoted nationalists wrap themselves in the flag and use false patriotism as a ruse to dupe the public. How is it supporting the troops to rush them in with less training? How are we prosecuting the real struggle with Islamic terrorism when we sought to overthrow Saddam Hussein?

Far better if we had succesfully completed the war in Afghanistan, found bin Laden, and bargained with Iran from a position of strength. We would still have the goodwill of the world on our side which acts as a force multiplier. We would be pressuing Pakistan to quell its own radical elements and we would have the military capacity to offer a credible deterrent to Iran, or to more forcefully fight the serious elements of Islamic Terrorism in Northern Africa. YES, I know Al Qaeda is in Iraq but we are also fighting sectarian groups and in addition to the sheer wrongness of it, it's also a diversion of necessary resources.

It's possible to think this administration is completely incompetent without being Pollyanna. Conservatives pride themselves on their hard-headed pragmatism, but they refuse to admit that this situation is a fiasco of our own making.

Agree with Ant, if those things are still functional it seems wasteful -- I'm sure they can be donated to Unicef for distribution in the Third World or somesuch. Or, hell, to Goodwill.

My recycling center has hazardous waste collection (motor oil, antifreeze, batteries large and small, etc.) and also has reusable materials areas that functions similar to a free Goodwill store, and set-aside areas for consumables others might like to reuse (its where I get all my cardboard moving boxes... its a college town).

oh dear. look, no one is talking about allowing people to upload videos that promote themselves in any way. that includes "ZOMG-Check-Out-My-MonChiChi-videos type users" and corporate marketing employees, however cunning and well-funded.

what's being discussed is just the type of self-linking that involves uploading someone else's content to your account at a video hosting site, then posting it to VS. just that, nothing else.

any viral marketer clever enough to evade joedirt's bullshit detector would probably be clever enough to set up a dummy youtube account or three, as well. so it's not like this rule is the one thing separating videosift from a deluge of spam.

the "let's just agree to look the other way" plan for this limited type of self-linking (krupo's #1) is what's been in place until now. it's a pretty good plan. it might be possible to make the rule clearer, but it's probably not worth it, if it causes significant dissent. no matter what the rule says, we're going to have to depend on the trust and goodwill of other sifters to play fair.

so i suggest: leave well enough alone. don't change the rule. have theo and farhad (and anyone else) change the embed code or discard the controversial posts.

but at the same time: suggest setting up a videosift uploading account on youtube and/or google video and/or some other host, run by the admins, where they can mirror videos that our members have uploaded to youtube/googlevideo/etc. that way, farhad (or whoever) can upload his video to his youtube account, email dag/james/lucky, who can download it (here's the firefox plugin) and re-upload the same file to the videosift account on youtube, after which farhad (or whoever) can post it here without offending the self-link police.

this has the advantage of sticking much closer to the original wording of the user guidelines, which suggest emailing the admins if you have self-made content you'd like to see posted here. and if the content is suspicious in any way, or the user is requesting this service way too often, the admins have every right to refuse.
