Sofia Boutella is getting a lot of work. She's the Mummy, she was the black and white alien in Star Trek 3: The Beat Drops Here, had a funky bent sword foot in Kingsmen.

How a 50 Caliber Tround Machine Gun Works

Looks to me like the only benefit they're claiming is that the mechanism is mechanically simpler. That's probably a reasonable benefit, but they've had 100 years to perfect more traditional guns so I imagine there would need to be a pretty substantial advantage to be worthwhile, particularly since it needs special ammunition and all the faffing about with supply chains and inventory that it would necessitate.

It's possible the open chamber would help heat-wise by preventing the bullets from "cooking off" which is a problem with some machine guns that happens when the chamber gets hot enough to ignite the propellant making the gun run away, firing without the trigger being pulled. That wouldn't apply to an electrically (or whatever) driven gun like this, though.

So... yeah, it's probably just one of those "let's try it and see what comes of it" sort of things, because I don't know why you'd want a gun with funky ammunition that takes up more space because it might be slightly more reliable than the otherwise very reliable existing guns.

I'd guess that it would cause warping as the structure got bigger, they need the previous layers to cool rapidly to prevent deformation (although the previous layer needs to be hot enough to get a good water tight bond). Coming up with the right temp so that it forms a seamless flat surface would be difficult without causing running.

Not to be "that guy" (okay, what the hell, I love being "that guy") but aside from arty stuff, light shades, the aforementioned ashtrays and perhaps some really funky vases/glasses, this really seems to be limited by the method of extrusion and the refraction caused by having so many curved surfaces throughout the piece.

So to make it seamless would they need to up the ambient temperature plus the speed of the nozzle? Or could they just make the nozzle quick enough that the previous layer hadn't started to cool before the next one hit?

Varoufakis is on stage at an IMK gig in Berlin right now. It was ~40 minutes of old news, really, at least if you've been following the developments over the last couple of months.

The interesting bit is that he's still making a clear commitment to a permanent primary surplus. For a country as devastated as Greece, that's austerity. Some argue that a 5% deficit over 5-10 years would be required to get Greece back on track, Bill Mitchell and Jamie Galbraith even make the case for running a 10% deficit to get some traction.

Since Varoufakis has to be aware that a primary surplus of any size is still contractionary, I wonder what funky accounting voodoo he has in mind to circumvent this contradiction. Just surplus recycling via the EIB? Who knows...

Edit: the ongoing panel discussion is interesting though.

Edit #2: the recording is now up again:

Edit #3: SPON has a piece on it this morning and one of the first comments correctly calls them out on it.
