Well - as with many Sift vids this brings up a complicated issue and only chooses to tell a part of the story.

Companies, banks, insurers, financial institutions, and many businesses have indeed behaved with what can only be described as evil indifference. They have gamed systems around the world to create favorable business environments for themselves, and when the market collapsed they pushed slimy political patronage in order to get bailouts to save them from their stupidity. These businesses should have been allowed to fail and damn the consequences.

But the video ignores the other dancers on the floor - government and the citizens.

Western governments have been 'engineering' this problem for decades because of leftist poltiical philosophy being funded with crony 'capitalism'. They have been buying votes with social giveaways, and partnering with business to use skullduggery and questionable legislation (and some outright unconstitutional stuff) to engage in 'social justice', 'political fairness'. But progressive/liberal philosophies always run governments into unsustainability because the model cannot sustain itself. Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany and the rest aren't in financial trouble just because banks behaved like idiots. They are on the brink of collapse because they promised trillions in social benefits that they NEVER had the ability to supply. They knew this long ago, but made a devil's bargain with the sleazy businesses to shadow-fund the shell game. But inevitably, unsustainable models break, and now everything is crumbling around them, which forces them to make cuts (austerity measures) or face total collapse.

Which finally brings us to player #3. The people. No offense to specific individuals, but as a collective the citizens of Western civilization have behaved (with exceptions of course) like a bunch of spoiled brats. This angry Irishman is probably a spoiled brat too, since he looks to be a part of the Boomer generation which is one of the most spoiled rotton generations this world has ever seen and he's totally whining about not getting to keep his precious benefits. Despite potential financial collapse, these stupid people still till want to retire at age 50, get 1 month a year free vacation, free college, full retirement benefits, and every other unaffordable perk, benefit, freebie, and giveaway they can glom their sticky, greedy mitts on. Not to mention that they VOTED these bozos into office based on promises to get all this stuff, which is why the governments screwed up so badly to start with.

Bad banks? Sure. But government and the people get no free pass with me.

Bad story? Did you get that from when he said the game was beautifully written? And I'd venture that almost no one who buys a $60 game wants it to last only 5 hours, as portal did. It's definitely not a casual or budget game. As for the MMOish quests, as he mentioned they're all optional.


I think you've completely misjudged something there - i'm willing to bet the majority of people who played portal would in retrospect pay $60 to have played portal. The fact that valve gave it away as a freebie as part of the orange box is one of the most amazing gifts to gaming.

The length of a game is irrelevant to me, if they had spread portal out over 30 hours and charged me for it i would have thought it was crap. Some of the best games i've ever played have been indie games costing a fraction of normal games, lasting a fraction of the duration too, but Braid was probably one of my favourite recent games since portal.

More often than not i'm disappointed by big titles. The only ones to never have let me down so far IS valve. Bioshock was a really great and fun game, i loved it, but if you said i could only play one and offered me bioshock or portal, i'd choose portal and give you $60 and a thank you.

The gaming market obviously goes in the direction that people like best. Whatever sells, sells. But i cannot get my head around people like you who think that the most important thing is that they give you 60 hours of gaming, WHATEVER the quality of that gaming is.

If a game lasted 30 minutes but it blew me away like no other game before, that'd be a good game. Hypothetically of course, because it's unlikely to be able to do that in 30 mins, but you get my point.

The maximum refers to the freebie 1 powerpoint that "regenerates" every few days. If you earn powerpoints by getting top 15 videos etc, then they are added onto your existing amount. You get every power point you earn. This is how people are able to doublepromote etc. I, for example, currently have 7 powerpoints.

The same also goes for purchased ones, they are added onto your current amount I believe.

Pay attention. This is what society is like. It's normally just slightly hidden.

On the plus side, politics is like one of those freebie careers, where anybody with 1/2 a brain can easily out-compete the normal 1/4 brain participants. And if you have a 1/1 brain.. well, that sounds dangerous...

Or, you know, treat his psychosis if he has indeed suffered a psychotic break.

It'll be for people involved in the case to decide if he falls under mental defect or not and the case will run accordingly, but you cannot hold a person responsible for what occurs during a break beyond consigning them to treatment until such time as they are deemed fit again.

To do anything else would be cruel.

The amount of knee jerking going on is understandable but is driven purely from emotion. For all we know the murderer may just be a soulless bastard who deserves to die or just some poor bastard who for whatever reason snapped. Seems strange that, if he was such a horrible person, he doesn't have a criminal record...

Again with the thought that this person has done something terrible, and therefore the only logical solution is to kill them.

There are many cases where people who have committed terrible crimes have made the world a better place later by what they've let us know about their mindset, and ways to combat that, or by having such remorse and sorrow for what they've done that they've done great works from behind bars that have helped many others.

A swift killing of those that commit these crimes does nothing for our long term betterment as a society. Keeping them locked away is definitely a requirement, as those that have 'snapped' like this before are more than likely to do so again, but you aren't really going to learn much from someone who is just going to be killed whether they tell you their deepest, darkest secrets or not.

And for those saying 'if it were your loved one killed, you'd want them dead'. No, no I wouldn't. I wouldn't want them locked away with ANY chance of parole, that'd scare the living hell out of me, if they have a chance of coming back into society then that's not something that would make me happy, but I really, truly would rather them serve a lifetime repenting and making amends for what they did.

But people will obviously just say 'yeah, well, you haven't had it happen to you, so you can't know for sure'. And yeah, true, and let's hope none of us here are faced with this.
