Americas Forgotten Concordes - Boeing 2707 - Lockheed L-2000

Drachen_Jager says...

The Concorde was never really successful though, because Americans wouldn't let it fly through American airspace (well, not farther than NYC, anyhow). They claimed it was because of the noise, but in reality it was just sour grapes at being beaten by the French.

Why Are Aeroplane Wings Angled Backwards?

Chairman_woo says...

God dammit, pressure is not how wings produce lift! (in his defence it's an extremely common mis-explanation)

If it was then they wouldn't ever work upside down (which they clearly can do when designed for it). Nor does the top and bottom airflow always meet again on the other side evenly, or in fact is the bottom stream always faster than the top.

Bernoulli's principle augments lift in efficient designs, but it's newtons 3rd law which actually makes them work.

You can even see the wash vortex falling down off the wings flying through smoke. It's the equal and opposite reaction from this deflection that causes the majority of lift and drag from a wing .

Star Wars Battlefront Trailer

OverLord says...

It was fun, very limited. But god damn, the music, the sound effects, people flying through the air when their jump packs malfunction. It's like crack for your childhood memories.

Nice trailer, but I read the game beta sucked.

White Shark 0: Seal 1

00Scud00 says...

On occasion at work I'll come across a book on sharks where the cover depicts a still shot of a shark coming up out of the water in pursuit of a seal like in this clip. The seal is flying through the air, just barely out of reach of the shark's jaws and you can see that he's already got a gash on his tail.
The best part is that it's clearly meant to be a book for elementary school libraries.

Boring to watch...I bet it's exciting to 'fly' through though!
I would have been too scared of hitting bottom at speed to relax enough to hold my breath long. Dude's got some serious control!

Impressive breath hold, but would be nice to have a bit more info, like how deep he was (I'm guessing pretty deep from the lack of colour saturation).

Boring dive site though.

@artician, for me the best visually stunning Superman film to date, and for everyone...I watched this vid with the sound off and watched the kid's reaction with the screen super-imposition, and pretty much inserted his dialog for him, goes something like this:

YAY, CLOUDS!

YAYYYYY! MORE WATERS....TOUCH IT!

( i maybe am bored, have to maybe pee, I'm hungry a liitle), "YAAAY HOLE IN GROUND- FLY THROUGH!"

clap-clap, Ok Dad, let's you and me get some titty and or chewy-chews....Yawn

DC-3 or a flying lawn mower?

How Animals See The World

rich_magnet says...

Hmm. This could have been done better. I was hoping to see visualizations of:
* Birds' extremely high-speed vision; fast enough to fly through trees' foliage.
* Jumping spiders with 2 focusable main eyes and 6 other eyes.
* Mantis shrimp with their 6+ receptors, including UV, IR and polarization.
