Making a Sling-Primitive Technology

Chairman_woo says...

I have limited experience with slinging, but IMHO it's already very much the same as just throwing a stone out of your hand in terms of aim and how it feels.

You basically just release the knot at the point of the swing where you would anyway. Feels very natural.

There's also very little gain in swinging it more than one revolution above your head, almost all the power comes from the flick at the last moment.

I found getting a good power stroke (ooh er Mrs etc.) was the harder part.

A good afternoon of farting about and you could probably kill someone fairly proficiently with one though.

Someone with a lifetime of practice would be terrifying, at least as much as a good archer I would imagine.

Would be interesting to hear if he thinks that using the sling could get as natural as throwing with one's own arm, given enough practice.

I'm getting visions of "Groundhog Day" in my head -- "6 months, 4-5 hours a day, and you'd be an expert."

1st Trailer for Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War”

moonsammy says...

If you like any of the Marvel movies, do yourself a favor and see Winter Soldier, it will answer your question in spades. Some important aspects of it have been spoiled by your having watched this trailer, but it's an *excellent* movie. I'd put it in my top 3 or 4 Marvel flicks, along with Iron Man 1, Avengers 1, and Guardians. I didn't like the first Captain America movie, but Winter Soldier is a whole different animal, vastly superior in my opinion.

Tom Hardy Aggressively Responds To Sexuality Question.

Bruti79 says...

Yeah, yeah, yeah, *shakes head* Toronto media goes two for two on mucking up Tom Hardy questions. It was a Toronto reporter that asked him the Mad Max "chick flick" question in Cannes.

Man, our media is terrible. =(

Batman vs Joker (Stop Motion)

sixshot says...

Good stuff. The guy has several more animations on his channel. There's even one paying homage to the old kung fu action flicks, starring various Gundam models.

So, you liked Kill Bill?

9547bis says...

If you liked Suzuki's visuals and cinematography, I can only recommend Tokyo Drifter, a Yakuza movie that was a kind of pioneer in perverting the codes of the genre.

If you like 60s Japanese period flicks with a Sergio-Leonesque take on the Samurais genre, Suzuki also made a couple, but in that case do also have a look at Kenji Misumi's work, better known as the director of the original Zatoichi The Blind Swordsman, and of course as the main director of Lone Wolf And Cub, a.k.a Baby Kart. The two first movies were kind-of-butchered, re-cut and re-dubbed as "Shogun Assassin" in the USA; but the real thing is six movies long, and all of them are worth it in my opinion.

That was one of the most amazing pieces of film I've ever seen.

I was impressed with it. A good Sci Fi flick without a lot of action shots is a rarity theses days. Thanks for the tip.

Ex Machina -- have you seen that one?

If not, give it a shot. Best AI-themed movie I've seen in quite some time.

Messed with my head though, big time. It poses the sort of questions that lurk in the back of your head, only to emerge again at night, when you least want your brain to run on all cylinders, if you know what I mean.

Tom Hiddleston dances in Korea

eric3579 says...

He dances better then he acts. Celebrity(fan boy) worship is annoying. Don't kid yourself. Know different them Justin Bieber worship. Same type of talent IMO.

-edit-
I have no idea. Maybe the guy can actually act(although I wouldn't consider playing Loki as good acting). Any idiot can play a super hero role (imo) I just hate super hero flicks. They are such shit usually as films go.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Teaser #2

poolcleaner says...

Yeah, I sort of didn't want to bring him up. I'm still reeling from Prometheus... I walked out of each Star Wars and Star Trek film shaking my head wondering what happened. But Prometheus -- there wasn't a single moment I believed I was watching a film from the Alien franchise. Sad memories... sad memories...

On a lighter note, how about M. Night's new flick? Thoughts? Ahaha! Maybe this time the secret ending is that it's going to be a good film.

All of these people are capable of making good movies and television. Where does it go wrong? Why are we being dumped on with horrible, but well meaning movies? Someone tell Hollywood their formula SUCKS. We liked it before there was a formula.

If Star Wars 7 is a piece of shit, does that mean It Follows was my favorite film of the year? That would be hilarious, because I really like that film but mostly for the score. I sort of hope it's my favorite film of the year, with awesome lofi soundtrack and "F Star Wars" as my cited reasons.

The problem with Lost, like Star Trek Into Darkness, wasn't JJ. It was Lindelof. The man's a hack. Fortunately, he's not writing this.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Teaser #2

AeroMechanical says...

I think Abrams was a pretty good choice. He represents the opposite of the fundamental thing I didn't like about the prequels, namely that Lucas took himself and the films too seriously (on top of being a crappy director in general). Abrams makes good action/adventure popcorn flicks, which is where the series needs to go, at least for the first film.

Schwarzenegger Zombie Movie Trailer

Asmo says...

Seems like a bit of a departure from his caricature roles, more of a serious drama, thinking persons zombie flick perhaps? Nothing wrong with "zombie" per se if it's done properly. I'm interested.

The problem with actions movies today

coolhund says...

Fury was laughable. It tried too hard, so it looked like a pathetic propaganda movie from exactly those times.
John Wick however was really well made. It felt like a good 80s or 90s action flick.

You had one job!

SFOGuy says...

4:08---the cascading crane collapse---was sort of terrifying.
Fails are sort of funny horrifying---because they can be at the edge of snuff flicks with the weights and objects involved in some of these...
