Dead Whale Explodes on Contact

food ideas (Blog Entry by jwray)

cheap and good: popcorn! PASTA! Corn. Beans. Mixed vegetables in curry spices. Dal. I'd put milk here too.

also, pretzels are a relatively healthy snack, so long as you don't go crazy or get the ones covered in flavored crap.

should probably avoid just about every white carb/starch too.

your advice on travel @ prague & berlin (Blog Entry by paul4dirt)

I couldnt tell you much about the nightlife, not up to date in that area ever since we had our baby, but as far as art goes there are heaps of little galleries around the Mitte/Prenzlauer Berg Area off Torstrasse.

You will also find lots of record shops around this area. There is one at the bottom end of Brunnenstrasse near Rosenthaler Platz and also a few on Kastanienallee around the corner.

Friedrichshain (former east/ lots of students) or Kreuzberg (former west/very alternative) are also young and lively areas with lots of bars and shops, they will likely have some good record shops too, but I don´t know the areas too well.

I also love the "Hamburger Bahnhof" Gallery for Contemporary Art, they always have special exhibitions on, but their regular display is also worth a look by itself.

There is also an Annie Leibovitz exhibiton at the Postfuhramt next to the gorgeous Synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse.

Anywhere is good to walk around really. So much history everywhere.
I´d concentrate on the former East, but I am sure the West has some nice areas too. Or there is of course the huge Tiergarten for peace and quiet.

Not sure who has the best french fries, but there is some strong competition for who makes the best Currywurst in Berlin. Some say Curry 36 on Mehringdamm in the West , some say Konopke at the Eberswalder Strasse train stop. There are heaps of choices in between really. I am sure you will try a few

Why Atheists Care About YOUR Religion

HadouKen24 says...

To buttress my point, here's a list of holy wars divided between monotheists and non-monotheists.

Caused by monotheists:

  • Crusades in the Holy Land.

  • Crusades in France (aka Albigensian Crusades)

  • Northern Crusades against Baltic pagans.

  • 16th century French Wars of Religion.

  • Taiping Rebellion.

  • 2nd Century battles for the Holy Land.

  • Muslim Conquests of Arabia.

  • Muslim Conquests of Asia Minor

  • Muslim Conquests of Northern Africa.

  • Muslim Conquest of Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal)

  • The Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula.

  • The 30 Years War.

  • Saxon Wars of the 9th century.

  • Conflicts of Bosnia and Kosovo. (The media didn't really report it, but the wars were as much about Christianity versus Islam as anything else.)

  • Protestant-Catholic conflict in Northern Ireland

Caused by non-monotheists:
  • The Second Sino-Japanese War.

The video mentions the Kalinga War started by Ashoka, ruler of the Mauryan empire, as a war caused by religion, but there's absolutely no evidence that this is the case. Everything points to it having been instigated purely for the sake of imperial expansion.

In fact, Ashoka suffered crushing guilt when he saw the horrors his war had brought about. He then converted to Buddhism and renounced war, committing himself to the promulgation of Buddhism and the prosperity and well-being of his people.

So, I've got a list of 14 wars waged in the name of monotheistic religions, and just one war waged in the name of a non-monotheistic religion. (And if you look at the history, it was only labeled a religious war well after it had begun to curry popular support; it wasn't started religion, though it probably would have ended sooner without it.)

Consider that for most of the world's history, most people weren't monotheists. Monotheism didn't really grab a significant chunk of the world's population until the 8th century or so. Even today, almost half of the world's population believes either in no God or in more than one god. Were non-monotheistic religions, to generalize, disposed to holy wars and religious conflicts, the numbers would bear that out. But they don't.

Heck, let's look at religious conflicts going on right now. There are 24 listed conflicts, and only 2 of them were instigated by non-monotheists.

The facts are pretty clear. Non-monotheistic religions, on the whole, don't really cause holy wars. Almost every monotheistic religion, on the other hand, does cause holy wars. The only exception that comes to mind is Mormonism, which hasn't had a chance yet.

Atheists, please restrict your ire appropriately.

Not a fan of that death, he wasn't talking in all caps. I also can't see Discworld's Death saying "bugger off" or "I could murder a good curry." He'd be too dispassionate and refined.

He says almost those exact things in the death trilogy. Mort perhaps.

I'm Ashamed to be Australian

persephone says...

No need to feel ashamed. Everyone looked cheesy in the 80s. These guys may not be much in the way of actors, but they did their part to put Australian swimmers in the lime-light with all their Olympic effort.

I didn't know about Lisa Curry's surgery. I used to live with her sister and one day when Lisa came to visit, some local gromets were hanging around trying to get a glimpse of their swimming idol.

I decided to take a nap, only to be woken a little while later by one of the gromets yelling out, "Hey Lisa Curry, my mate wants to fuck you."

I ran outside, told them all to piss off and chased them down the street.

I don't know if she heard them, or if she did, if she even cared about what they were yelling, but I was certainly annoyed with the negative attention being directed to our house from a bunch of horny 12 year-olds.

I hope your surgery goes well, Lisa. Love and light to you.
