Can I double upvote this? I'm perpetually amazed and dismayed that TV can support 96 variations of CSI and other assorted generic cop dramas, hours of banal "reality" shows every day, and loads of other worthless dreck but Firefly couldn't even be given a complete single season to develop a viewing fanbase that had the potential to be much better than a tiny niche product.

It's not a mockery of CSI. The dwarf was over in 1999, CSI premiered in October of 2000.
