I'm So Excited! - new film from Pedro Almodovar

ulysses1904 says...

I'm looking forward to this, despite this bizarre promo. His movies are always intriguing, with complex relationships between the characters and strange plots. That last one "The Skin I live In" (El Piel Que Habito) was truly strange. My favorite is probably "Volver" with Penelope Cruz. Check out "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" from 1988, it has a young Antonio Banderas with a Rick Astley haircut.

Ricky Gervais: My Ugliest Self-Photos

Trancecoach says...

Radcliffe actually seems a bit repressed, if you ask me... like, he's so careful not to offend anyone that he hardly has anything to say... and while I don't follow him that closely, I know he's been outspoken in a few (relatively safe) political positions (antidiscrimination of homosexuals, I think?) and, even then, he seems reticent and ambivalent. I give him a few years until his breakdown and subsequent reinvention.

Why isn't Jessica Ennis in the tags. She's a gold medal winner in an event that's actually seriously tough...it's not like the 500 different swimming events that you can compete in and get medals galore! She's fucking awesome!

Also not a Harry Potter fan or anything, they seem all well and good but I really like Daniel Radcliffe. Whenever I see him in an interview or something he just seems genuinely polite and nice to everyone. I think if you're gonna have that much money and fame, the least you can do is be a good dude and he certainly seems like one.

Shelley Lubben On Abuse In The Porn Industry - (Very NSFW)

Shepppard says...

How about you don't put words in my mouth? I never said "They get what they ask for". I said "If you don't like it, STOP DOING IT". Same with BR, only with a little less tact.

Seriously, did you read my post? It's effectively 4 or 5 paragraphs saying A) We don't know what goes on prior to filming, and B) If you don't like what you're doing, find the strength to walk away.

I won't go into a full breakdown of my original post, because I feel that if anybody actually took the time to read it, they'd see that i'm definitely not advocating rape (I'd like to point out a quote from my original post: "Maybe we will get rape sites, and if that happens then I fear for the sake of civilized society" you know, saying that I'm hoping that never becomes a reality because of the shear horror that would bring.)

In short, get off whatever soap box you think you're on, because your comment was effectively "Fuck BR->fuck the chick in this vid her views are unrealistic and silly->Fuck BR and Sheppard."

catbutt said:

BR, you got this one thing right - your post was indeed a biased piece of shit. You are a biased piece of shit.

At any rate, Lubben comes across as one of the born-again porn stars who have done a 180 with their lives and want to push what worked for them on other people. Some of the things she advocates would be fine for a normal workplace (screening, safety measures, unions, etc) but the porn industry is unconventional at best, fucking shady most of the time, and occasionally criminal. Her goals of bringing 9-5 workplace standards to porn are unrealistic.

Dicks like BR and Sheppard who say "that's the way it is, the girls get what they ask for" are the same kind of dicks who did rape cheerleading in The Accused. Hope that works out well for you in RL, suckers.

The Longest Word in English (Pronounced)

Sagemind says...

I don't care what they say. That's not a word.
- Idiots

What it is, is a string of sounds all having their own meanings strung together like a sentence. It reminds me of medical terminology. There's a reason med terminology is not included in the dictionary, they arn't words so much as they are prefexs, suffexes, nouns, verbs and so on, which, when strung together, form a description of a body part or procedure.

So ya, this the "Chemical" name of titin, the largest known protein. It's basicly a description of the molucular breakdown (or recipee) for the chemical. This has been disputed as even being a word. It's like speaking Latin genus names.

>> ^renatojj:

@Kofi if 200 billion is not enough, wouldn't that amount increase if government didn't take away so much from it? If people were allowed to keep more of their money, I think they would have more to likely donate to charity.

Well if you look at "charity" breakdown, it's only about $35B that goes to anything like disaster relief.

So let's use that real number. And then let's pretend that it's not already spent on ongoing everyday problems, and then let's pretend the ~$60B in tax revenue that these "charities" are exempted from costs nothing.

Are you seriously claiming that you could put together a lean-mean non-profit relief org that could manage to be prepared for, and provide aid in any arbitrary situation like hurricane Sandy for $35B a year? What about the next thing? What if you go a Katrina instead?

>> ^renatojj:

Also, I'm sure you'll agree that just throwing money at a problem is not a solution, whether it's 200 billion or 2 trillion, the amount isn't everything. Just look at how much more money government takes and how poorly it does its job. Wouldn't charity, without the wasteful middle man of government, improve the situation?
Besides, wasting money is the opposite of charity, because it's money that won't go into productive employment, goods, services, and investments. So society is worse off, and while most of us can still go on with our lives, those who are needy and poor are the most affected by any amount of wasted resources.

Large Organizations are wasteful, if they are for-profit, charity, or government, having a large enough infrastructure to address large problems is costly, that is not a government problem.

We live in a high infrastructure technological society. We don't form bucket brigades when someone's house catches on fire, we have professionals, with effective equipment, who show up and solve this problem more quickly and efficiently, and at a lower aggregate cost to society.

The same is true of disaster relief, we pay for the maintenance of a professional disaster relief infrastructure, and it's cheaper than either doing it ad-hoc, or not having anything in place at all.

Kindness and charity are good and real human impulses, but they are not preparedness, we have organizations for that, we call them governments.

Certainly didn't take you long to resort to personal attacks. Sorry I annoy you.
Congratulations, you annoy me.
1. Your connection is ridiculous. I must somehow be privileged or sexist to have this view?
2. I guess I cannot figure out your point, since I only directly dealt with #3 in your post it sure sounded like "because she cannot turn off being fat, its nothing like smoking". Your other points are you soapboxing about how you want the world to be and are not something I am likely to convince you about.
3. She needs to binge eat in front of the camera to draw the conclusion that she overeats? I completely disagree with you that SHE is in a situation where being overweight is a necessity.
A point I will concede to: It is WILDLY more expensive to healthily than to eat garbage. Being on a local TV program however makes me think she is likely able to afford healthier choices.
3b. Please feel free to provide some hard numbers on the incidence of genetic obesity
4. I redefined behavior following you redefining behavior as essentially a state one can inhibit in the presence of others. Obesity is a behavioral problem. Feel free to use meriam webster if that link is insufficient for you.
5. I didn't ignore 1, and 2 of your post I just didn't reply to it. I don't agree with you. Period. It is tangential to our argument and while valid arguments will further take it off topic.I will say that you ascribe such heightened value to everything it makes me think you are on the brink of a nervous breakdown.
6. What do I care if what she said was not reprehensible? To be blunt, she cites this as a bullying event. It isn't. That is inaccurate. Its becoming the first warcry of those with hurt feelings. My main problem with it is that doing this has the effect of DEVALUING the term, and often when that happens people become desensitized to it. Not every statement is bullying. Not everyone who hears a negative utterance was bullied.
7. One said wasn't saying Shh. One side was privately making a statment. Voicing an opinion, however dickish. Was it his place? Nope. Was it nice? Nope. Was it his right? Yes if you live in any of the 50 states it is his right. A lot of assholes do things with words, like the westboro baptist church and gay soldiers funerals. When it reaches a point of bullying things need to be done (and in the westboro case something WAS done to stop them). That's a good thing. That differentiation between systemic hatred and one guy writing an email NEEDS to be made clear.
Last to your example of Chris Christie, people are BRUTAL to that guy. He gets his share of mail I assure you. People give him shit for the exact same reason of being int he public eye as well. The sexist/privelaged thing is just wild speculation on your part that only makes an angry situation seem angrier. That says a lot about you and your mindset, too.

It's a fair point to call me out on making presumptions about you and linking your comments to those I've been reading elsewhere; my apologies for that.

You cannot dissociate my first 2 points above from the third: you do not go telling strangers, even in a passive-aggressive way, that they are unfit to be in the public eye. For someone so quick to see personal attacks in comments about you, you seem rather impervious to those in the letter you defend (then again, 'tis true that I'm not very subtle when pissed). The real tangent, one I should probably not have given so much weight to, is whether or not obesity is something one can show/not show and induce simply by showing it (my argument remains valid, btw, it's just not so important as to repeat it all over, and your strawmen are so obvious as to no longer require pointing out).

Your point as I understand it is twofold: the letter-writer has a right to send the anchor his personal criticism and is right to do so. I only agree with the first part; he has a right to do so ((so long) as it is not harassment/threats), but she is also right to call him out for it, and point out that such behaviour is wrong, and that it participates in a culture that tolerates bullying, by letting people think it's fine to say whatever they think to whomever without questioning whether it might be hurtful or not. And nobody's saying that something like this is as bad as WBC-style bullying or systemic racist bs, just like nobody would argue that a female politician being meowed in a session by a colleague is as bad a case of sexism/misogyny as a continually harassed or beaten wife, for example. They are, however, on a spectrum with a unifying underlying belief, namely "I can and should voice my opinions/(dis)tastes about others without taking how it affects them into consideration (and society has nothing to say about it)".

The reason I projected the whole sexism/privilege thing on your comments is because they contain the same "it's harmless/no big deal" and "just poor me self-victimisation" and "what's with making a private event/exchange public?" and "you're trampling his rights!" dismissals. It was wrong of me to do so, but at least now you can understand why I did.

Speaking of projection, presumption and personal attacks, you sure are quick to jump to (and stick to) the conclusion that the anchor is overweight because she has poor lifestyle choices (the same assumptions behind the letter), which is why I (and @bmacs27) went on the tangent of "there's-more-to-obesity-than-being-a-lazy-junkfood-gobler". The assumption that an overweight person is that way because s/he choses so is insulting and ignorant in and of itself, the same way the GOP's "poor people are that way cuz they're lazy moochers who don't pull themselves up by the bootstraps" is.

As for Chris Christie, I refer to point 1) of my comment above: public denunciation all 'round!

I hope that has clarified my argument. Otherwise, I refer you to @Thumper's comments, less contentious than mine and with which I wholly agree.

quality breakdown of what secularism means, and why it's ridiculous to whine about supposedly "militant secularism".

I beg to differ on the semantics.

Militant: "vigorously active, combative and aggressive, especially in support of a cause"
A "militant secularist" might be someone who actively seeks out examples of theism (such a prayer, acknowledgment of a divine power, or symbols of theist holidays in government settings) in order to protest, or one that continues their opposition despite broad support for theist behavior in the affected community. You can determine for yourself if this type of action is objectionable or laudable, but I think it's entirely possible to be a "militant secularist".

Of Montreal - A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger

MrFisk says...

I spent the winter on the verge of a total breakdown
While living in Norway
I felt the darkness of the black metal bands
But being such fawn of a man
I didn't burn down any old churches
Just slept way too much, just slept

My mind rejects the frequency
It's static craziness to me
Is it a solar fever?

The TV man is too loud
Our plane is sleeping on a cloud
You turn the dial, I'll try and smile
We've eaten plastic weather
This family sticks together
We will escape from the south to the west side

My mind rejects the frequency
It's just verbosity to me

I spent the winter with my nose buried in a book
While trying to restructure my character
Because it had become vile to its creator
And through many dreadful nights
I lay praying to a saint that nobody has heard of
And waiting for some high times to come again

My mind rejects the frequency
It's static craziness to me
Is it a solar fever?

The TV man is too loud
Our plane is sleeping on a cloud
You turn the dial, I'll try and smile
We've eaten plastic weather
This family sticks together
We will escape from the south to the west side

My mind rejects the frequency
It's just verbosity to me

Dirty old shadow, stay away
Don't play your games with me
I am older now, I see the way you operate
If you don't hurt me then you die

My mind rejects the frequency
It's static craziness to me
Is it a solar fever?

The TV man is too loud
Our plane is sleeping on a cloud
You turn the dial, I'll try and smile
We've eaten plastic weather
This family sticks together
We will escape from the south to the west side

My mind rejects the frequency
It's just verbosity to me

If you look at their footwork, it seems like they are doing the cha-cha (one-two, cha-cha-cha, three-four, cha-cha-cha; repeat.) except in the cha-cha the guy usually leads with the left foot... this dude is stepping back with the left and leading with the right foot. They've also clearly incorporated a lot of salsa dance moves into the routine to make it "sexier." And judging from the stiffness of the moves they are high-beginners/low-intermediates. I'm guessing this was a performance on some public access cable channel that wanted to showcase local kids and their talents?
While I applaud the kids for having the guts to get on TV and dance, they are completely off the tempo (they're going way to fast) and the choice of music is terrible.

Nice breakdown, but it's pretty obvious that the music in the video is not what they were originally dancing to.
