Bobcat Perches Atop Saguaro Cactus

Brick Laying Machine

Porksandwich says...

@mgittle

Im 5'11" my dad is probably 6'1" or 6'2". Brother with the broken disk is 6'4"ish.

They told my brother that taller people tend to have a lot of disk problems especially in their lower back that shorter people don't have. Even so much so that their disks tend to be weaker as they get older. But they said seeing that kind of injury in someone under 30 was extremely rare and wondered if he had some kind of degenerative disease and found nothing to suggest it.

The union crews for physical labor will cover you better than working on your own. There's usually enough laborers that you don't have to go for extended periods of shoveling or anything like that. And anyone not in the unions are usually young or have substance abuse problems if they are still laborers and not doing something higher up the food chain by the age of 30-35.

Anymore we stick to the least amount of handwork possible, even if it takes us a little longer with a machine. But there are some things that machines can't do even a little bit of on every job so we try to spread it out between us and over a few days if possible.

If you want to see what a life of manual labor can do to you. Find an old guy who does tires, replacing, removing...anything like that. I haven't seen one that can stand up straight no matter what their height, they all have that hunched over like they are looking for something on the ground look to them.

But the simple fact is, a lot of the work is needed.....and if you want someone who won't screw it up you need the older guys who've seen the various problems that might come up. Lot of crews that have 1-2 40ish guys running a crew....they get young guys who get hurt bad or killed on the job because they skip stuff that seem like wasted time. Properly securing things (dropping equipment in the middle of the freeway, this stems from substance abuse as much as negligence, lots of people run around with unsecured loads against all laws and never get caught), not stacking stuff next to the edge of a deep ditch (caves in the ditch wall and can crush someone in the ditch below it or at least crack them in the head, was an inspector who got the top of his head sheered off when some bricks went down into a ditch he was trying to climb out of and caused to collapse), staying clear of machines or making sure the guy on the machine knows you're there (guy got backed over by a dump truck, broken legs from people twisting bobcats and catching people in the legs next to it, etc).

Im too afraid to work on highway crews, those guys work in a dangerous as hell place and usually only have a few barrels protecting them from someone running them over. Was a girl who was running a roller, a semi went by and hit her in the head with it's side mirror. She was in the hospital for months before she died. And then you got all the machines and people working in the little confined spaces in the middle of both sides of traffic, so you can't hear very well...

Probably the best place I've ever worked doing asphalt was on a military base. Don't have to worry about people vandalizing or stealing your stuff and they stay away from you while you work. And they can follow simple ideas like barriers are meant to keep you out and arrows mean follow them around the big hole in the ground. And you got prevailing rates, but it was just a lot less stressful to not have to worry about getting ran down because someone wanted to rubberneck.

Obama White House Withheld Information about BP Oil Spill

Porksandwich says...

If they were serious about cleaning this up there wouldn't have been misspoken numbers for months, and they wouldn't have left BP in a position to dictate and make decisions. They would been a lot more open, and while they would have used BPs resources and some recommendations this cover up stuff wouldn't have even been considered. It really didn't matter if BP suffered financially, that's what happens when you punch a hole in the ground and don't properly manage it.......and then fail to have the capacity you claim to have to deal with the problem in a timely manner.

There were a lot of people who probably would have volunteered to work there for room and board if they had some kind of assurances that the air wasn't toxic and they would be given at least adequate protection against contact with toxins. And even more people who would have liked to be paid to clean up the mess, and I mean really clean it up. Not out there with shovels and a trash bag in white paper suits. Bring in some machinery, dig and line some trenches to divert water to where it could be treated as it came in a long the coast lines. Boom the waterways and treat the water before spilling it into the reserves and parks.

Most of the footage you saw were guys in white outfits with shovels and trash bags.....if you had a spill anywhere else in the world of petroleum based products, they'd laugh at you if you just had guys with shovels and trash bags trying to clean it up. A few guys on dozers/hoes/bobcats could replace all of those guys for a majority of the work you saw being done, handwork can not be completely replaced but the majority of it can be and much more efficiently. It would have cut the penetration time down significantly having a machine sweep it away instead of having people trying to outdig the ocean current.

And it's not as if they couldn't justify the cost of severely damaging equipment in the process of this clean up..since sand and oily grit are going to wear machines out if they are exposed to it constantly. They probably could have gotten the machines damn near donated by any of the manufacturers to get their brands on TV and in the news.

Backhoe scales tower in Germany

Porksandwich says...

That's not a backhoe, that's track hoe.

Left side of screen looks like a rubber tire loader.

Right side is a bull dozer.

Most distance item looks like it might be another rubber tire loader.

Machine at 1:26 is a track loader.

Hard to tell if they have track or tires with it being so dark and pretty much always being far camera shots. Day time building scenes are easiest to see.

But the thing climbing the tower is a track hoe. Track hoes can spin all the way around on their tracks, so they can dig a hole and load the dirt to a truck behind them.

A back hoe can only move it's digging arm in roughly a 180 degree arc, basically it's 90 degrees off center in either direction, so they can only load a truck that's sitting beside them. I have run backhoe (often), and a very small version of a track hoe (week or so). Backhoes are called backhoes because basically they used to be tractors with a loading bucket on the front and a hoe attachment on the back. They eventually morphed into what you see today, loading bucket or skid loader attachment on front and hoe (digging arm) on back....never seen them on tracks if it's even an option... typically rubber tires with stabilizer legs they can let down on the digging arm end of the machine. So the front bucket and the 2 stabilizer legs make it so the machine is pretty solid on the ground. Digging without the legs down is a good way to throw up your lunch especially if the ground is really hard, the tires just constantly bounce from the force the arm can add and relieve in a blink of an eye.

Bobcats and backhoes are what most people own as they can do a lot of jobs with the right attachments/buckets/etc. I would say that backhoes are the safer of the two, while bobcats have more utility due to attachments. Bobcats will let you dump whatever you load in the front bucket right on top of the machine (where you're sitting) and aren't typically covered in the front....and their ability to spin in a circle is a good way to break things or hurt someone really bad.

Haha, my girlfriend and I were both nerding out playing Scribblenauts on our DSs last night. Fun game, btw, if you happen to have a DS. I've never seen Lost, but I don't really watch tv much at all, and the few shows I do like and have on my computer I still only watch once in a while haha. Farah is pretty great, for a little bobcat-like curious kitten. She spends as much time running wild around the apartment looking for things to use as toys as she does anything else. Hopefully that'll settle down after a month or so more when she's more used to things. She does this cute little chirpy type meow a lot of the time, I guess it might be a girl cat thing? My previous cat also did that, never heard a male do it though.

Pretty good, thank u! We are both nerding out right now (DFT on the xbox, myself on the internet) and we JUST got all caught up on Lost. Neither of us had ever gotten into it until over the summer while we were on vacation. Funny, I didn't think we'd both get so into it! Fun times. How are you? How is Farah? Give her a scratch behind the ears for me.

Thanks thanks! How are you and DFT doing lately?

In reply to this comment by Issykitty:
LOL! Nice find, my friend! Congrats!

Meme this thing may end up being, not many will have President Obama's stern disagreement in them.

Also, I think this is the first time I've gotten a vid into the top 15!
