VideoSift Fundraiser (Sift Talk Post)

James Roe says...

Hey Campionidelmondo,

You are certainly right that there is room for improvement. There will always be room for improvement. I'm just saying that I don't think any large scale website that I know of is running on stock software. I would like to define large scale as more than 80,000 page views a day.

Yes you can certainly bend a CMS into doing whatever you want, but I think you ultimately are losing performance when you do that. Our SQL querries / tables have been optimized to do exactly what we need them to do. If you take the underlying schema for an existing CMS and bend it to your will you are probably also having to do certain things on the back end that destroy any original performance boosts.

Ultimately though the issues with videosift performance have more to do with the amount of dynamic data on the page. Take a look at just this page, there are over 100+ comments, numerous users, and 5 or 6 distinct sidebar data panels. That's a lot of querries to run regardless of the hardware.

I think ultimately a key factor in understanding the need for beefy videosift servers is a quick look at the total number of indexed pages from google. Right now it's hovering just under a million but in reality there are over 3 million possible pages if not more than that. Google will ocassionally trim their results. Anyway you shake it that's a ton of data. You only get about 211,000 for techcrunch.

^ It's to get us though the next 3-4 months. We'd rather not have to come back and beg for more next month. I think I mentioned this elsewhere but our current configuration is 4 very beefy boxes in a rack in Virginia. We also use a Content Delivery Network to host all of our thumbnails and other graphical elements. The fees for that are more variable than the servers because it depends on our traffic. But the CDN is great because it means all images download from a server near you.

So you need 12.000 for 3-4 months? And after that? Would you need more again? I don't mind supporting the site, but this seems unsustainable. Have you checked other hosting and server options? Maybe you can find something cheaper.
Also how can Digg manage without donations? Their bandwidth must be through the roof.

What Are Your Top 5 Books? (Books Talk Post)

Asmordean says...

1. Dune - Frank Herbert
Dune remains amoung my favourite book I've read and the only one I've read multiple times. While I was disappointed by the rest of the series, the first book is a tremendous read and very enjoyable.

2. Deadhouse Gates - Steven Erikson (Book 2 of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series)
The Malazan Empire series by Steven Erikson is one of the hardest to read fantasy books I've ever encountered. The author has a complex web of relations and events going on while writing with a fairly high level of english. The second book stands out for its section call "The Chain of Dogs" which details a group of refugees fleeing to safety under the guidance of a powerful leader.

3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
A great blend of comedy and science fiction. I still remember the first time I read the passage about the two missles screaming toward the Heart of Gold. I burst out laughing as the petunias came into being.

4. The Colour of Magic - Terry Pratchett
The fantasy version of Douglas Adams. Equally enjoyable and both love to use footnotes* for off the wall observations.

5. Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks
While probably not the best written book and it is clearly Tolkien inspired, it is in my top 5 simply because it was the first real book I ever read. Previously I only read a few kids books, this one was a beefy amount of pages that took my 12 year old mind nearly a year to get through.

How Not To Shoot a Gun.

Crosswords says...

Wow, stupidity at its highest, I'll give the an *eia

I believe he said it was a .500 Magnum (S&W), which is a true hand canon of a gun. I'm far from a gun aficionado, but being from Texas I'm required to watch at least a few minutes of people firing guns on TV every month. And I've seen professionals fire those beast, most of the time they're using a rest to sturdy their aim and absorb some of the impact from the shot. I've seen it fired free standing like that, but by guys with beefy looking arms, and a good stance, and even then it had a very notable kick back. She on the other hand, didn't seem to have much muscle strength on her nor a particularly good stance. Hopefully they were smart enough to only put one bullet in that thing.

Obama Turns Heckling Into a Discussion at Townhall

blackjackshellac says...

Imagine if this had happened at a Bush townhall (they never allowed it to happen because they only admitted soft critics so the question is moot) the guys would have been tasered and carried away by three beefy security dudes.

Obama handles himself as one has come to expect. A very impressive speaker, a mind like that is qualified to lead, imho.

I love to see men in tender moments.

No relation. I think its pre WW1. I just like it because its such a tender depiction of companionship between males from an era that we don't usually think of such things happening.
