I just saw that you can cut and past the automatic German transcript on the video info now, and maybe you even could before, it looks like it might be easier to correct this than to start from scratch? Actually you can get the gist of it from this, so maybe I was a bit hard on it earlier:

Banks are few and far between outside the middle / upper class areas of the states (spent 2 and a bit months driving around it over new years with some mates), its not like here in aus.

For some, it means driving for a few hours just to get to a bank branch. They have to rely instead on cheques, because they cant give their employers a bank account number to pay into....and to cash those cheques costs money...its such a sad state.

Maybe I'm uninformed here, but are they saying they're not able to open a debit account? Surely that's a zero risk proposition for any bank (if overdraws are restricted), it's just pure interest for them on anything you keep in there (minus any interest you receive).

Or is it different in the US with your reliance on checks? Even if that's the case, surely checking could just be restricted, leaving you with either cash withdraws or paying by card, with instant electronic verification.

As to transaction fees. Over here in Oz, most transaction and saving accounts are monthly fee free. This is pretty new (as recently as several years ago you'd have a $5-10 monthly fee). Wonder if it's different in the states.

If they're not able to secure a loan, that's a different issue entirely. I don't see how an alternative banking system would help there.

Butters does have a point though...

Heh, American's and their huge bowl of water... In Aus, we have a small amount of water at the bottom (1 square of toilet paper covers it nicely and prevents splashback) and then the entire cistern flushes your waste around the sbend, rather than using a pool that drains away, then refills.

How Does A Gas Nozzle Know When To Shut Off?

Asmo says...

Threw me for a minute when he described the venturi effect as effecting fluids like gas...

(here in Aus we refer to it as petrol or fuel, gas is LNG or any other substance that is, ya know, a gas)

I agree 100%. We have all of those requirements here in Australia and I'm not sad about it. I would like the restrictions for the types of firearms we can shoot to be relaxed though. We can't shoot higher than .38 pistols for IPSC or similar. We can't get semi-auto .22LR rifles. You need a license for air-soft.

It's called the M84 in Aus - the recoilless rifle - that would be awesome fun.

"This can probably be attributed to better firearms training, safety and general awareness."

I have nothing against safety training, of course. And sure, Its even a good thing to be familiar with weapons, if nothing else but to see how dangerous they are. But I'm also favouring gun control. When the ATF can't even say its illegal to sell guns to DRUNK people, I think its been heading in the wrong direction for quite some time. Its fine if you own a gun, but then you should also know how to handle one safely, and be deemed reasonably fit to own a gun. You should be required to store it safely, and so on. There's a lot of things you can do without "taking your weapons".

"BTW - I envy the firearms that you've gotten to fire."

Yeah, this was in the army, I havent touched a gun since., but shooting rockets from the shoulder with the Carl Gustav is pretty fun.(I called it M84 in my previous post, we called it RFK in the army) Also the MG3 because its such a classic (its basically an MG42) And the A3G3 is one mean-ass assault-rifle(I think we calculated that we shot 15000 or was it 30k? rounds each (in my platoon) with that gun during that year.)

Motorcycles Lane Splitting is Safe!

Sepacore says...

As a car driver, I support it. Gets more people out of my way.
I like bikes getting to the front of traffic while I'm sitting at lights because they get off the line quicker than most cars do, and I'm not basing that on machine capability, I'm basing it on my observation that bikes appear to pay more attention and are usually ready the instant the light goes green (possibly because they don't want to get rear ended)

As for lane splitting being dangerous, yeah of course there's a potential for a very negative situation if/when people aren't paying attention or staying in control of their vehicle.. but then so is having nothing but a painted line separating you from oncoming traffic at 100km/h.
For any reason why lane splitting is bad, consider other driving situations by the same logic, if you have one that is notable (other than due to the lack of a crumple zone, as this is a trump card), then let me know.

I pay attention when merging lanes and use the indicator to signal before I start merging as it is intended, and have never had an issue or impact with bikes (or anyone for that matter). I also position my car either closer to the side of the road or middle of my lane in traffic to make it easier for bikes to get past, and it appears a decent amount of others do this as well.
Not sure if it's legal in Aus (I don't think it is), but I've never seen cops pull a biker over for it. Besides, it's efficient and if everyone is doing what they're supposed to (i.e. paying attention to their surroundings + controlling their vehicle well), then there shouldn't be an issue.

I'm interested in the reasons why it's bad or shouldn't be done, as I may be missing something from a bikes perspective.

@Sagemind, sounds like you may have other solid points, like the drifting and merging. I see these as issues, but my points are based on people supposed to be paying attention, controlling their vehicles (easier for some) and bikes picking their moments to dive through while not being rash about it.
Side note, I do see lots of cars and bikes behavior as being hard to judge and thus dangerous, if this is your main point, then I agree.
