Creating Hell in a pop-bottle with half a gram of water

PHJF says...

Take a tough bottle (Simply Orange bottles are fantastic), pour some of The Works cleaner in it, and toss in some lightly-packed balls of aluminum foil. Put the lid on and wait for the magic.

Does lemon Juice and tin foil cause reaction? How old were the fish?
http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem07/chem07183.htm
So if the Aluminum foil is really Aluminum then Lemon Juice causes the release of hydrogen gasses. But I think this is more a case of the lemon juice hitting the fish. The fish, somehow, still having living nerve endings.
Think of it like putting lemon juice on an open paper cut.

I think what kulpims meant is that lemon juice and tin foil create an electric current which triggers the muscles of the dead fish.

Simple explanation is there is something in the water that reacts with the aluminum foil... such as bromine or sodium chloride....not sure what though.
All just a neat trick...

What you really have to look at here are the underlying ideas that a person has. The strength of the convictions that George W. has made over the years lend credence to the fact that he is a very religious person. Now, I know what you mean, belief by itself is not a bad thing. BUT your beliefs have a very big impact on the way you think and ACT. Sam Harris uses this example:

take the statement: "Aliens are controlling your thoughts and are reading your mind from space." As phrases go, you were probably unaffected by this sentence because, well, you dont believe it. Now if you DID believe it you would probably be doing all sorts of crazy things (wearing an aluminum foil hat comes to mind)

Now what does George Bush believe? He DID say (if you really want proof I will take the time to dig up a video of it) that God told him to go to war. What else god is telling him to do I'm not quite sure but whatever it is I feel like at this point, George W. is a president that has forgotten his people. He is being lead around by dogmatic ideas (something i posted about in a different thread), ruining this country, and he's doing it because of the beliefs that have ruined his better judgment.

In reply to this comment by thepinky:
Okay, you're right. Absolutely right. And I agree with you that religion and politics should not mix. But I still think that it was silly for Maher to mention that we could not "afford another faith-based administration," as if religion itself is what ruins administrations. Bush's mistakes should not be blamed on his faith, but on Bush himself. Don't let him hide behind his religion. And saying that we can't afford it is silly, as if we haven't been "affording" religious Presidents who bring their own values into the White House for the last 220 years.

The BEST Turkey You Have Ever Had

burdturgler says...

Ingredients

* 1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey

For the brine:

* 1 cup kosher salt
* 1/2 cup light brown sugar
* 1 gallon vegetable stock
* 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
* 1/2 tablespoon allspice berries
* 1/2 tablespoon candied ginger (or 1/4 t ground ginger)
* 1 gallon iced water

For the aromatics:

* 1 red apple, sliced
* 1/2 onion, sliced
* 1 cinnamon stick
* 1 cup water
* 4 sprigs rosemary
* 6 leaves sage
* Canola oil (or corn oil)

Directions

Combine all brine ingredients, except ice water, in a stockpot, and bring to a boil. Stir to dissolve solids, then remove from heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.

Early on the day of cooking, (or late the night before) combine the brine and ice water in a clean 5-gallon bucket. Place thawed turkey breast side down in brine, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area (like a basement) for 6 hours. Turn turkey over once, half way through brining.

A few minutes before roasting, heat oven to 500 degrees. Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes.

Remove bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard brine.

Place bird on roasting rack inside wide, low pan and pat dry with paper towels. Add steeped aromatics to cavity along with rosemary and sage. Tuck back wings and coat whole bird liberally with canola (or other neutral) oil.

Roast on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F. for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cover breast with double layer of aluminum foil, insert probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and return to oven, reducing temperature to 350 degrees F. Set thermometer alarm (if available) to 161 degrees. A 14 to 16 pound bird should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let turkey rest, loosely covered for 15 minutes before carving.

More Flashlight Overclocking

joedirt says...

What a douche.

First of all, this Krypton bulb is rated for 15 hrs avg life. So goodluck with your flashlight, at $1.50 replacement per bulb.

Ok, now on to power requirements. Bulb is rated at 650mA at 6V, but idiot video make is using (3) of them, so overvoltage on bulb seriously reduces it's life. Ok.. so maybe at 9V we are talking about 800mA or something.

Now the batteries. I don't know what planet this idiot comes from but those camera batteries are muy expensivo. The CR123's typically cost $5-$10. Sounds fun! For you flashlighting needs, this thing is getting expensive. $15 AT LEAST to replace your flashlight batteries. Typical CR123 is rated at 1400mAh... So hurrah, you might get six hours of lifetime from your new flashlight. Series batteries doesn't exactly scale compared to parallel connection at 3V.. But close enough first order approx. Heck, let's be generous and assume the darn thing last a whole 12 hours that the lightbulb will last!

So there you go.
$18 flashlight that last 12 hours.

If you are going to do this, at least go with the halogen blub. (Catalog #: 272-1189) Which is rated for 25hrs avg life.

That and 5.2V and 850mA, so go with two 3V batteries, and see how bright it is. (At 5.2V the halogen is rated 20% brighter than the krypton at 6V) Sure your flashlight is now smaller, so cut the end of plastic, or throw in a spring or aluminum foil into the end of it.

Extremely Fast Choreographed Wushu Fight

dantes_torment says...

I remember the last competition I was in, just holding my combat steel broadswords and looking at any and all wushu blades. Those things are practically made of aluminum foil; they're so light, most divisions didn't allow weapons forms with wushu weapons, and a good thing too. Swinging around twin 5 pound swords, then stopping on a dime better not be compared to wiggling a sword lighter than a cardboard cutout. I guess they do serve their purpose of being light and weak, for fancy stuff, though. But the worst wound you would get if fighting against that would be a deep papercut, maybe; it would probably just slap you a bit.
