Israelis Celebrate IDF Flotilla Attack

Fletch says...

Wow... these people. "Siege that doesn't exist", "provocative act of violence from Turkey". My favorite is the "we are a nation of peace", followed by the "death to Arabs" dude. Do they have an equivalent of FOX over there? Maybe when you believe that you are the "chosen people", you can do no wrong.

+1 for "helicopter of love"

Wikileaks - U.S. Apache killing civilians in Baghdad

I remember a line from "The Siege" to which this seems appropriate.

"The Army is a broad sword, not a scalpel. Trust me, senator - you do not want the Army in an American city." -General William Devereaux

Replace American city with any army in any city not in a time of complete war. The real tragedy is there doesn't seem to be any hope of it changing any time soon

Obama on Security Failure: 'The Buck Stops With Me'

NetRunner says...

^ You should read the full statement. This clip captures most of the money quotes, but they left out what I thought was the best part:

Here at home, we will strengthen our defenses, but we will not succumb to a siege mentality that sacrifices the open society and liberties and values that we cherish as Americans, because great and proud nations don't hunker down and hide behind walls of suspicion and mistrust. That is exactly what our adversaries want. And so long as I am president, we will never hand them that victory.

We will define the character of our country, not some band of small men intent on killing innocent men, women and children.

That's sounding a bit more like the guy I campaigned for. I understand why he's got the rhetoric dialed way back now that he's the President, but he needs to go back several more notches toward the idealism and passion that got him there.

Sorry Im horrible at getting myself understood the first time on these things I think my brain over thinks simple conversations sometimes. I guess what I was thinking was what the likely hood of that kind of thing happening again was or does it happen often? Do people seriously get harassed a lot? I was even thinking of taking a trip there one day and I wanted to have a good experience. I guess Im wondering if thats likely?

Ive actually thought of Denmark it looks like a beautiful place but the language barrier would be huge for me. I actually know a little French thought of moving close to the coast where I could take a ferry to the Isle.
Thanks for your input.

I'm not sure I understand your question fully, but if you're asking me for a ratio of goths to degenerate low-life then I would say 1: many. Aimless, jobless, intent-on-criminality pond life are legion in this country, although in part I suppose that's down to the government as unemployment is high and aspirations are low among the young in the less privileged parts of our society. Forget England, apparently Denmark is a very nice place to live (well at least according to a friend who spent a few months there) if you are looking for tolerant, friendly folk and a youth culture that doesn't revolve around loitering on the streets and haranguing members of the public. I'm starting to sound like the Daily Mail now, So I'd better shut up

Yes I have often thought that moving to England would be some kind of a dream. From hearing about this and what you have said maybe I was wrong. I really thought it would be the king of place where people could walk down the street at night and smile and say hi and be nice to everyone.
A question for you. You say you live in the area. What do you think is the percentage of people that are goth or different according to the people who committed these crimes? Or do you know?

Really shocked that this happened in England. I always thought Europeans were more tolerant of others. Now I'm starting to realize maybe there is no place on the earth where everyone can be happy together.

I live quite near to where this girl was killed. I'm afraid that any romantic notion you had of England doesn't exist any more - we are under siege from feckless, moronic, feral youths who engage in low levels of criminality (and the occasional high profile case) with near impunity. God help you if you ever decide to take one of the little bleeders down a peg or two, though, as you'll more than likely be the one who ends up banged up.

"we are under siege from feckless, moronic, feral youths who engage in low levels of criminality (and the occasional high profile case) with near impunity."

I figured that all the rednecks in this country had to come from somewhere.

Hearing about an innocent girl beaten to death like this makes me angry enough to reciprocate their behavior on them.

It makes me want to smash their faces into 10 thousand tiny broken shattered pieces.

I feel less inclined to try to do so however, as I've seen a video of someone being murdered by actually having their face smashed and I must say: it's really not the great idea that it sounds like.

I don't think things would have been any different in this case, but watching that video of the Russian teens slamming a heavy wrench into the face of a helpless old man ought to de-stomach most people to such notions.

Especially during the part where he regains conciousness and tries to shake his head, completely unaware of what's going on, as his battered broken face bleeds down and squirts out a pale pinkish arterial spray.

Maddow: Pot, Meet Kettle

xxovercastxx says...

Whether you think he used the word holocaust correctly or not (and no, he didn't), it basically gave anyone who might disagree with his statement an easy way to dismiss it. It's a strategical error, if nothing else.

Leaving The Holocaust out of this for the moment, why is the word incorrect? Because there's no great destruction causing the widespread loss of life and there's definitely no fire. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was a holocaust. 9/11 could be considered a holocaust. The siege of Waco could be considered a holocaust. The battle of Mabila, the Mystic massacre and the sleeping village massacre were holocausts. This is people dying because they have inadequate health care.

Calling it a holocaust is just dramatization.

War In Chechnya - Lezginka

Farhad2000 says...

The Second Chechen War, in a later phase better known as the War in the North Caucasus, was launched by the Russian Federation starting August 26, 1999, in which Russian federal forces largely recaptured the separatist region of Chechnya.

The Second Chechen War was started in response to the Invasion of Dagestan by the IIPB, and the Russian apartment bombings which Russia blamed on Chechen separatists, although no evidence linking Chechens with the bombings has been released to the public. The campaign largely reversed the outcome of the First Chechen War, in which the region gained de facto independence as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Although it is regarded by many as an internal conflict within the Russian Federation, the war attracted a large number of Jihadist foreign fighters.

During the initial campaign, Russian military and pro-Russian Chechen paramilitary faced Chechen separatists in open combat, but eventually seized the Chechen capital Grozny in February 2000 after a winter siege. Russia established direct rule of Chechnya in May 2000 and after the full-scale offensive, Chechen guerrilla resistance throughout the North Caucasus region continued to inflict heavy Russian casualties and challenge Russian political control over Chechnya for several more years. Some Chechen rebels also carried out terrorist attacks against civilians in Russia. These terrorist attacks, as well as widespread human rights violations by Russian and rebel forces, drew international condemnation.

Russia has severely disabled the Chechen rebel movement, although violence still occurs throughout the North Caucasus. Large-scale fighting has been replaced by guerrilla warfare and bombings targeting federal troops and forces of the regional government, with the violence more often spilling over into adjacent regions since 2005. The exact death toll from this conflict is unknown, yet estimates range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands dead or missing, mostly civilians in Chechnya. No clear figures for Russian losses are known to the public. In spite of its large amount of casualties, both Chechen wars remain largely unpublicized abroad.
