Why the UK Election Results are Worst in History - CGP Grey

Jinx says...

Tbh, it pains me that a result like this happened AFTER a referendum on voting reform. If more people had realised that voting for the 3rd/4th/5th party was going to result in a majority Tory government with only a 1/3 of the votes maybe less people would have listened to Labour/Conservatives propaganda.

It's pretty funny how maybe a decade ago this narrow of a win would have been reported as vote of no-confidence for any party. This time around it seemed people were so relieved to not have a hung parliament that they seem to have let the blues off the hook completely while they enact their bonkers plans for austerity without a real mandate from the people.

ps. I totally predicted the election result and I'd just like to tell all those political pundits that I am ready to accept their resignation and yes I told ya so.

Is it me or does the IM windows open up after a while being idled? I went to sleep and had many tabs of VS videos opened overnight (after midnight PDT). I came back after overnight in the late morning hours, and saw every VS tabs with IM windows opened. I didn't even open them. What the heck?

Hmm. That sounds really unusual, and it shouldn't be possible given how the IM window is designed to function. Once you close the window on a page, it completely ceases all activity until you click to open it again. Not sure what happened with your browser.

I will keep my eyes opened for it. It was very weird! I tend to leave my web browsers, with many tabs (can be up to 50 , up for many hours especially overnight. FYI, I was still using Mozilla's SeaMonkey v2.0.14 web browsers with AdBlock Plus, disabled referers, FlashBlock (only play videos when I am ready), etc.

Maybe there's need to be an option to disable/hide IM too.

Ellen's emotional message regarding recent teen suicides

bareboards2 says...

I deplore bullying.

However, I am beginning to think that the broadcasting of Tyler wasn't an example of homophobic bullying.

All the news reports say that Tyler was shy. I suspect in part due to past history with bullying or a need to hide his sexual identity.

Reports are coming out of the roommate's gay friends defending them.

I suspect that his roommate was more "congratulating" Tyler on finally scoring, and scoring with the one he WANTED to score with -- a guy.

I am ready to bet that if Tyler had been in there with a woman, the same stupid invasion of privacy would have happened, with the post also ending in "yay!" As in, yay for Tyler! Yay for coming out of your shell! Yay for "getting some."

Was it a horrific invasion of privacy? Oh yeah. Have stupid frat/college guys been doing this to their roommates (albeit without the internet to broadcast) as long as there have been videocameras?

Heck, there is a movie out now called The Virginity Project that is exactly this scenario.

I think the roommate was stupid. I also think this isn't an example of homophobic bullying.

I also think that if being gay weren't treated as such a sin, Tyler wouldn't have been so horrified at being "outed."

I grieve for all parties involved.

SiftQuisition -MrFisk -DrAlcibiades & The Absence of Reason (Actionpack Talk Post)

Fjnbk says...

I find it entirely possible that MrFisk was not aware of the discussion about sock puppetry. Of his sparse comments, none of them except the ones in this thread were posted to Sift Talk, so it is likely that he rarely spends time here.

I didn't start visiting Sift Talk until I was a gold star, even missing the congratulatory post about me. So, MrFisk may not have ever seen anything about sock puppetry on this site, or on the Internet.

That said, any responsible person should realize the dishonesty of having sock puppets. But since there is no clear, definitive policy about having them in the FAQ, I say that we give MrFisk a chance to explain his sins before banning him. I am ready to expel him from the site if there is a certain lack of repentance.
