Penn & Teller: Fool Us // Kostya Kimlat Makes Penn Mad

Dumdeedum says...

Digging through the YouTube comments followed by a little further searching, yeah, apparently the basic idea is he's sorting the cards face-up/face down underneath as he fans them out near the end. A description which probably doesn't do justice to the amount of dexterity & concentration required while also keeping up the patter.

Inevitably you can also buy the technique video from the guy's website: http://kostyakimlat.com/roadrunner-cull.html

That was supposed to be a lead in to discussing BluesNews. "Uh huh. "

The internet. It builds trust and our relationships here are real and a great substitute for face to face interaction. I'm glad this is the future.

Is there a button for 67% sarcasm? Shit, 58% now.... fuck.

Maybe some people are more decent than we expect...

Sagemind says...

So, This is really hard to vote for.

This video is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

It's a social experiment, but it's more than that. We know people are basically decent people. It was hard to watch, emotionally, because you feel for the guy, no one should have to receive this type of message, and no one should have to translate it to him.

But in fact, no one did send it, and he already knows what it says which makes me feel manipulated. Of course this made me emotionally upset for the situation. These types of videos are becoming more popular, where a guided scenario is set up, to induce the outcome that is wanted. Essentially this was an empathy test.

This setting was essentially sterile and set face to face with no outside obstacles - the outcomes were practically predetermined.

What if the readers were a group of strangers? What if it was outside in an open environment? What would the creators have done if the reaction was, in fact, not a positive outcome?

So many questions on how this was created and presented....
Thoughts?

Last Week Tonight - Ferguson and Police Militarization

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

@enoch and @VoodooV, I wish I could put you two together in a room, in a quiet cocktail party setting and let you talk to each other face to face. I *know* you wouldn't be this mean to each other.

It's the same old cliche about the dehumanising effect of the anonymous web - try and remember that we're all human beings at the other end of the line.

Bill Maher New Rules on "Hate Filled" Social Media

MilkmanDan says...

One of the most intriguing aspects of this to me is that in spite of our total acceptance of it currently, we didn't see it coming at all.

Ultima Online, one of the first MMOs, allowed people to do "bad" stuff like steal from or kill other players, but made the assumption that such things wouldn't happen much because the in-game society would regulate itself like a real face-to-face society. ...Yeah, didn't work out so well.

Makes me wonder what the next few generations that grow up with social media representing a hugely significant chunk of their human interaction will be like. Maybe I'm just cynical, but it's a scary thought.

11 Years Later Robber Apologizes for Stick-Up

albrite30 says...

Being a former addict and alcoholic myself, I have made amends to countless people, sometimes monetarily and sometimes with just apologies. It is hard!! Every time I am face to face with someone I have harmed, I get all choked up and it's hard for me to talk. I give this video a heartfelt *quality

Guy films juvenile kestrel in the backyard when suddenly...

No one mentioned it yet, so I'd just like to point out that Velocity5's initial comment (the one to which Carny first responded) was tagged sarcasm.

Given the scarlet P adjacent to your name, Carny, you might be unaware that such comments here at the sift should not be taken at face value, much like actual, face-to-face, verbal sarcasm.

To quote Sgt. "Big Toe" Hulka, "Lighten Up Francis."

I forgot my phone

shinyblurry says...

its kind of sad when you visit a park and everyone there is either on their phone or a laptop. yes, this kind of thing does happen..and ive read that teens having grown up texting need therapy to learn how to communicate face to face. this vacuous culture that idolizes the self naturally creates self-absorbed people who are perpetually distracted by their own private little universes. having been hooked by the constant influx of new information and entertainment, you are really seeing a picture of addicts getting their fix. its generation me, myself and I..too busy with gratifying the self to even look you in the eye

Bitcoin Explained

rebuilder says...

As I see it, Bitcoin has use in:

-fast, low-cost electronic (not face-to-face) transactions
-transactions frowned upon or outlawed by governments or other sufficiently powerful entities.

It isn't like government currency, although it can be used for many of the same things.

doogle said:

This video suggests Bitcoins are mainly used on the "dark web". As if that's its main use. And real cash doesn't have that use in "dark alleys".

Wait for it ..........

aimpoint says...

I figured it would be a face. Recognizing faces is something that, for humans, has to be very precise if we are to also understand the subtle cues it provides. Read a book about body language, they showed the same thing with imagery only they flipped the face upside down and left the smile right side up.

The image is smiley/happy/positive

However when they flipped this very image...

Making friends in a ballpit!

SevenFingers says...

Perfect, use something that (almost) universally means innocence and fun to connect two strangers together face to face. It takes away most of the negative feelings, and you never know what you might learn/find.
